I’m the ‘guy at work’ who finally got his MG5 back after it took 72 days to get a replacement heater for my MG5. The fault turned out to be MG changed the part number on the heater and nobody queried it, so the part was never sent. That said, my garage sorted me out with the short range version of this model. If I had to choose between the short range ZS and the MG5, despite the older infotainment system, I’d still go for my short range 5. However, the model you guys reviewed would change that entirely and I’d go with the the long range ZS. It’s not quite as nice to drive as the 5, but all the other things make it a nicer car overall.

The catch as it turned out ……Please, please do not waste your money on an MG ev. Yes on the surface they are ‘good value’ but the reality in my experience unfortunately is that they are very poorly made, lose a fortune in value even in the first year and the garages that service them are basic and un professional. If you absolutely must buy one don’t buy it new at the very least. I’ve just sold mine in the uk, during my year of ownership I had two steering racks replaced (which was a nightmare because even the garage had to beg to mg to do it the second time) , the doors wouldn’t unlock in the rear, the rear seats when you folded them detached and I would say at least every 03rd time it would not turn on without turning it on an off. I would add something positive though , it was quite nice to drive and also I often got more range out of it in the summer than quoted. I brought it one year ago for £35,500 ( they are now selling them new for £26k believe) and have just sold it for the best offer i could for £19k. I’ve owned lots of cars, they all lose money but nothing like this and I’m not rich so couldn’t afford to keep making this mistake and don’t want anyone else to.

i recently bought an ex demo MG5 Exclusive; 5000 miles on the clock - £22,157. Previous vehicle was a 2004 Range Rover Vogue with LPG conversion - lovely vehicle but was starting to cost more to get through each MOT. Have watched your channel plus others that promote EVs and was impressed with what I saw. Love the MG5 - not quite as comfortable as the Range Rover but the joy of flying past filling stations, instant cabin heat - great value for money - smooth and sure footed car. I'm not worried about having an MG on the drive - it does everything that I need from a vehicle.

Hello, what kind of issues did you have with the car? I’ve had it in my mind to go for a MG5 as it seems too good to be true, in terms of cost and equipment.
@dfishpool70522 жыл бұрын
@@GavinScrimgeour Hi Gavin - no real issues but since I'm retired I'm not covering a vast mileage - the occasional top up of the battery using the 'granny' charger on Economy 7 is enough for the motoring that I'm doing. There was an issue when I had a home charger installed, a 'wallbox' - it was replaced and it still didn't work; following a full refund I had a Ohme Home Pro charger fitted - that failed to work and the company suggested that there was a fault the car. I had it fully checked out at the local dealers and it had a clean bill of health. The charger company replaced the Ohme Home Pro charger and it worked immediately after installation. The only issue with the vehicle at the moment is the driver's door handle which sometimes sticks in the open position - a minor gripe! Otherwise I have nothing but praise for the car so far!! The build quality is good, the built in satnav is a bit clunky but once the destination is set it gives very good clear mapping and audio instructions; the radio is equally as good as the Harmon Kardon one that was in may Range Rover plus that this has DAB. If you want to use Google maps then you can just plug in your 'phone. At the moment its doing 3 miles per kWh, in the summer I was getting 4 miles per kWh - I use the economy setting plus max regeneration - that seems fine. On cold mornings it quickly defrosts the screens and mirrors and the cabin heats up much quicker than petrol or diesel vehicles. Hope that the foregoing has been useful. If you do decide to buy one, shop around for the best deal. Finally, when I bought the car it was from 202 miles from where I live and the car managed it without needing a top up on the journey and showed that there was still 20 miles in the battery - the journey was on motorways for the majority of the distance.

I think that 15 - 20 years ago, there was a huge difference between car brands and that the cheap ones were cheaply made and you could tell. The gap between manufacture levels has decreased and I would dare say most if not all low brands have moved to the midstream and are all okay. The premium brands need to work harder to show their extra benefits and MG are certainly throwing a huge question when you save over £7000 from them to the next brand. Certainly an interesting car and maybe they should have a top level with all the toys!!

You're spot on, the gap between let's say Octavia/Golf and Audi A6 is way smaller than it was 20 years ago. If you drive a lot and can easily afford it, it still makes sense to go for higher tier cars, but for normal income people and normal usage, it's not worth it.

One thing which reviewers seem to overlook is the regen braking set up on the ZS. Unlike an ID3, Ioniq or eC4 which increase the level of regen as the brake pedal is applied, regardless of which regen level has been selected, the friction brake only coming into play to kill the last 2-3 mph. The ZS can only go to a pre-set maximum in each of the three settings and uses much more friction braking when the brake pedal is operated. Its even worse in ACC. NO regen whatsoever is used - its purely reliant on the friction brake for slowing down. MG seem to lost the plot over this, perhaps in the pursuit of making it cheaper or to make the system less complex. Either way it's a disappointing situation and wouldn't make it my choice of EV

I've got one of these on order to, hopefully, come in May. I visited Kia and loved the look of the e-Niro, but the price was like 😳 Went to see the Hyundai Kona- HATED IT!! I don't know how that's being raved about. It felt so cheap after the e-Niro! It felt and looked like a child had fixed a box inbetween the front seats. Then the MG. Couldn't fault it. I was thinking there must be a catch, because, to me, it was waaay closervin quality to the e-Niro. So I went to look at the Peugeot e2008. The drive on that was smooth. It looked great, inside and out. My issue was how low it was. And the battery was a lot smaller than the MG. My friend came with me on the test drive on the MG. She said "why are you even bothering to have another look at the Peugeot? It's a no brainer! You're considering a car that isn't as good, just for a tiny light feature?!". The Peugeot has a led type interior light that I loved. Turns out you can buy those on Amazon if you want them. So MG it was!! And I have no regrets or second thoughts. Because it really is the best out of the 4. In terms of price, features, battery. Gotta be weighed up like that. It equals the Kia if you weigh it up on price and what you're getting.

I ordered my car 2 months ago, and it stood between the e-Niro and the ZS EV. I went into it preferring the ZS as it was both cheaper and had some really nice "luxury" features such as the panoramic roof and the 360 cameras. Trying out both cars twice though, I ended up going with the Kia. It also had some perks such as a heated steering wheel & ventilated seats, but in the end it was the driving experience that ended up making the difference. With the limited adjustment in the steering wheel of the ZS, I just couldn't quite get into a comfortable driving position. This combined with the overall handling feeling noticably better, I just couldn't justify choosing the ZS over it. I'm sure there are people that would prefer the ZS, for example if their anatomy might fit the ZS despite the limited adjustability. For me though, despite being close, the Kia was the winner out of the two.

I reckon you has unconscious brand bias there. You should've tested the MG on a lovely spring day with the sunroof open, gone for a bike ride and then charged the bike from the MG, maybe boiled the kettle for a cuppa. Get back and someone tells you that you have saved £7K towards a cool holiday - that would be an easy decision.

We ended up in the same position between the E-Niro, EC4 and ZS, but we could get a comfortable driving position in the ZS so ordered that one, the Kia was fantastic but couldn't justify the extra £6k as the ZS was brilliant as well. The EC4 for us just lacked the range. Overall, the EV market is getting good at making it hard to choose, just need to come down in price to make it competitive as at the moment they're pricing themselves out for a lot of people.

I would go for Trophy over SE as it gives me heated front seats, panaromic sun roof and faux leather seats as the main differentiators. They also have a iSmart app that lets us do a few basic functions remotely. App is a bit fiddly but does the work once connected. I think MG have listened to customer concerns over the Excite/Exclusive models and have fixed about 95% of the issues. Overall really pleased with my purchase. I don't think you should wait for Ora Cat, because the production in China is restricted due to supply chain issue. Ora has three models, White Cat, Black Cat and Good Cat (the one to be introduced in the UK). Ora has stopped accepting orders for White Cat and Black Cat. The price for Ora Good Cat was also adjusted upwards. Not just Ora, all EV makers in China are increasing prices for EV because raw materials prices are climbing quickly. For example, BYD has increased Dolphin EV's prices TWICE within the last month. Inflation is real. Everything, from batteries to iron, are getting more expensive. On top of prices increase, customers also have to wait longer for the EV to be delivered. Probably, Ora doesn't know how to price the car in the UK, given the volatility in raw materials prices and low volume of production. My suggestion is that, get an EV now, before the price hike.

While home charging (using a bargain Ohme charger via Octopus on the Go tariff) was cheap and a doddle... The UK infrastructure is annoying and fragmented.. longer journeys were a bit hit and miss.. @@entropy5431 I took a look and a test drive already prepared to be disappointed and fully expecting it to be a simply exercise in elimination. After all, the China haters have already prepared me for the worst. Skoda had a reputation for being sub-standard because they clearly were at one point, MG has no such reputation that I am aware of and simply suffers from discrimination by some people determined that anything coming from China must be crap, they tell us that must be the case while writing their comments on their Chinese made phone. Fortunately, many buyers do not care that is is made in China and particularly when they have actually tried one. Tell me, what corners do you feel that MG cut with the 52kw exclusive? My criticism, as an owner, would be limited to the slow to load infotainment system( I use Apple car play instead) bland styling, the lack of an app to monitor charging and have the car warm up before I got in. Oh, maybe the lack of electric adjustment of the seat on the passenger side. That's about it and I can live with it. Sorry, but another £10,000 to fix those very minor issues can be better spent elsewhere in my book. Anyone telling you the car is poorly built and cheap is talking out of his arse. It's also quick enough to be fun (7 second 0-60), as some boy racing tit that thought I was holding him up just found out at the lights as I put him back behind me again. 🙂 I'm perfectly happy that my car will sell perfectly well when it comes to that time which is likely to be four years and about 28,000 miles. Talking about cold weather driving, is the battery pack air cooled or is that a thing of the past with all new ev's? Can you preheat / precondition the battery?

A lot of that interior reminds me of my 2013 polo. I wonder if it's all old VW stuff? things like the wheel buttons, door cards, door buttons etc.

I have a strange question. I hope to get one (though the waiting list is enormous. In Thailand where I live, the MG ZS EV is a connected car which I don't like. I have some chats with people on this and the question now is where the antennas for this are because I want to be able to disconnect them. Any idea?

Ordered one in Feb, i found the catch now. Was supposed to be delivered in July, no meaningful communication from MG about why the delay when it is scheduled to be built. Lots of evidence on forums of queue jumping as prices have gone up and MG reneging on PCP deals once the customer turns up to collect the vehicle. Oh and MG aren't accredited by the Motor industry ombudsman...not sure how reliable that 7 year warranty will be now
