Very timely for me personally Derek as I'm heading over to pick up a 2nd hand MX-30 in England and will be be travelling back via Holyhead before making my way up north. Unfortunately the Irish Ferries ship I'm travelling on doesn't have the onboard chargers though so will have to top up at the Gridserve chargers at the port. Great to see that Irish Ferries support EVs on some of their ships which is a good sign. Might need a few more bays in the years to come...

I have found that public chargers are very expensive and can be more than petrol / diesel equivalents so you do need to plan long trips much more carefully as a result. I have an MG5 which is great, but I am careful to plan chargers and always give myself three alternatives. I quite like planning my long journeys… a bit sad I know ;) but it works well :)

The total driven journey of 1000km (600miles ) for 89 pounds makes more sense perhaps - but still more expensive than it needs to be.

@@audriusa5368 tax on diesel and petrol from the government is way more than 20 percent. But the charger networks are there to make money but I feel they are charging far to much per kwh. Maybe the government should subsidize public charging and set a set profit margin for those accepting the subsidized rate to make public charging a viable alternative.

Great video. Nothing is perfect and there are minor shortcomings with the MG4 as there are with all cars. The lack of rain sensing wipers: yes I also miss that, but as you say - first world problems. Adaptive cruise control: I find it a bit ‘panicky’ in mine too, but mostly it’s fine. I have iPhone so can only comment on CarPlay: it’s very unpredictable when it works when wired but I recently bought a Bluetooth dongle and it works perfectly with that. Lane keep assist: mine is perfect. Nice gentle nudge and beep to alert me if it’s a bad error on my part. But while mine was in for a software reset (dealer hadn’t completed the handover preset checks) I had a courtesy car and that one was violent and I genuinely struggled to drive it on the motorway (read that from others so maybe get the dealer to check it) - dealer said they were aware and it needed a software upgrade. Overall I LOVE my MG4!

I enjoyed you review Derek, I am tempted to move from my Citroen eC4 to the MG4 but reading the comments in various sites there are quite a lot of people unhappy with the car, one of the biggest complaints is Software and the infotainment system. These comments stopped me in my tracks. My problem with the eC4 is Range although I had to get Citroen Assist out because of Brake failure so my car is in the garage at the moment and I has a Peugeot 5008 diesel hire car supplied by Citroen until my car has been sorted.

Thanks, I enjoyed that review. I've seen lots of people have issues wit the BP Pulse chargers. I used them a lot in GB recently, including the Stafford North site you visited. Never had an issue - I think the trick is to use an RFID card. They dont seem to have their own, but used Charge MyHyundai and worked first time every time. The BP Pulse App situation is similar to the reverse issue with Applegreen, up until recently not available in the UK. But yeah en-route DC charging is indeed very expensive. However the CMH card, with a 1 month sunscription, gave me rates of 45p/kwh. Made the trip so much cheaper.

BP pulse are pretty bad! I go to Ireland every christmas via holyhead, and the charger on the ferry is pretty useful, theres a fast charger in Holyhead port, thats pretty good, but its well hidden! Go past the terminal to the back of the car park, I usually charge up there before getting on the boat, Last year I got the new ZS EV long range so had one less stop than in previous years in the original ZS EV. Overall its pretty easy with a stop for us in Athlone at the Instavolts on the way to my Brother in Law's near Galway.

"faffing with bp pulse"... I used BP pulse 3 times, never get more than 20kwh speed. Most memorable was visit bp pulse charger in London-somewhere in deep basement full of dusty cars, picture like from old horror movie. Charging speed 15kwh, setup and connect took about 20min...oh boy... Now we ordered new car with motability and you can guess what network discount we get... BP pulse of course! So its membership with couple penies discount on slowest, max 2 stalls per place network. Its more mockery than some real help...

Even the MG4 can be fully charged from zero to 100% in just over 13 hours via a normal domestic wall-socket - so there was no reason not to top up the MG4 slowly and safely and cheaply back to 100% in the driveway at his friend's house. Our media loves to try to persuade everyone to buy and use wall-boxes - but that majority of drivers with driveways who drive well under 50 miles a day on well over 300 days of the year can easily manage without them - even more so if they can also top up at the work-place(usually for free). So don't buy a wall-box unless or until you really feel you need one - despite our media's constant collective-coercive attempts to persuade us not to simply plug into a wall-socket and top up overnight ! Didn't take your granny charger so you could have just used a standard plug overnight to put some into the battery? Amazing the ferry has charging which is great. Like to see you do a Atto 3 on a longer journey as I find the headrest like you found the seat sort of uncomfortable as it isn't adjustable and pushes in abit right at the shoulder level on my spine which is abit disconcerting along with the fact it has nowhere to put my left foot flat on the floor only the foot rest which is at the wrong angle unlike my classic Ioniq which there is space to put my foot next to the brake pedal flat on the floor.

Very interesting account of your journey. I have an MG5 with the same battery as your review car. I get over 220 miles on long journeys in summer and about 190 miles in the winter, even allowing for aircon / heaters. I don’t charge the battery above 20% and plan my journeys to give me charging options at that range. I noticed you ‘topping up’ your battery throughout the trip. What impact will this have on degradation long term? The manuals all go on about battery management, do you think topping up could have an impact on degradation and re-slake value? I do manage my car battery very carefully and log date, miles, % at start and % at end of charging whether at home or public chargers, KWh input and cost, it only takes me about 10 seconds to write this down in a log book I keep in the car. I am doing this so that I can maximise the battery longevity for the next person who may own my car, I want to be able to demonstrate good battery management. So when are you going to review the Cyberster ? …. I’ll look forward to that one ! Thanks for the great review :)

As are motorway petrol and diesel prices. No-one in their right minds fill up at the services unless they can avoid it, or I certainly didn't when I last had an ICE car (2015). Same for EVs (we have two, Renault Zoe and MG4 Trophy), charged off solar and home battery to 100% before starting journey, then topping up where necessary at cheapest available public charger usually just off the motorway, if or when needed. Yes charging costs are way too high, but they are on the way down now as energy prices are reducing.

The Android Auto can be fussy about cables, although an Anker should be fine. You do have to have your phone unlocked for Android Auto to start - could that have been the issue? On driver assist, if you engage Traffic Jam Assist (TJA) instead of regular cruise control, that actually keeps you centred in the lane, so effectively steers for you on the motorway The M6 toll prices are ridiculous, it's always worth checking the traffic conditions through the West Midlands. If the M6 is jammed up from J11-J4 then it is worth paying to avoid, otherwise it's a handy cash saving if you don't use the toll road

Yet again ppl charging their non LFP/LMFP batteries to more then 80%. Not recommended on a regular basis - what does that really mean? If the car is discharged to a maximum, why does nobody tell you what the charging times are?? Spoiler alert, whatever the 80/10 time is for the fast or superfast charger you are using, double it, so in terms of time management, it's a daft idea whilst on the journey. 75p/Kwh is outrageous. At 3.4 mi/Kwh, that's 22p/mile. My Mazda 2 D on motorways at 75 mph is 71 mpg, ie 9.3p/mile and I'll go 1100km on one tank, ie there and back. Diesel rules.

75p per kWh is crazy I agree. My Tesla charges at around 40p or less and does 4 mi/kWh if I take it easy so around 10p/mile from a Supercharger. If I charge from home it is a quarter of that price so less than 2.5p per mile. My last three Turbo Diesels would never do more than 55mpg on a trip and all three engines broke down under my ownership. Diesels are smelly dirty dinosaurs.

Whatever happened to that much-hyped multiple MG4 road-trip from the UK to the World Cup in Qatar? Abandoned? Achieved? Did anyone care either way? Paul G

Hi Derek......it's your friendly EV sceptic again. Not a very economical way to traval at all. I could be wrong but you seem to be charging around every 150kms and that is costing between 16 to 18 GBP.........that's about €20 yoyos for 150kms. €20 at current Diesel prices will get me about 250kms in my lovely, big, comfortable Skoda. No thanks.............they have a long way to go yet. Urban driving with home charging is all they are fit for........no matter which way you sugar coat it.

Shocking costs for out of home charging. Big hold back for EV is destination charging, it will improve but right now? Diesel for the long journey and a small range EV for day to day seem the best set up.

"Not a very economical way to traval at all... €20 at current Diesel prices will get me about 250kms". Can be. Traveled 3,500km from Ireland to Poznan & back last year in a Model 3, public charging costs amounted to €238.78, which is about €50 less than what your Skoda'd cost.

@@ThomasMcGuire my Skoda could do that journey with only 3 fuel ⛽ stops....if needed......at about 10mins each (including toilet stop and take away coffee)......I also wouldn't have to hog a lane of the carraige way at 100kmh, petrified that I will over use my battery 🔋. You cannot win the long distance travel argument. You just can't.

Man, your electricity costs are really high. In Australia, even using a Tesla supercharger it’s AUD$0.60/kWh, or about £0.32/kWh. Less than half your pricing.

@@countessa1estheria In Ireland, I believe the cost of Leccy at a motorway services is approx 70c per KW/H (that's euro cents)
