MG4 Question Answered - System Update (HOW, WHERE, WHEN & HOW MUCH?

MG should allow for user updates when the car is logged into their website (via an App on the Car using the users phone) so that the car talks to MG direct to get the updates.

It is certainly a great idea for all cars. At the same time, it takes time, effort and money to invest a system like this especially when different regions have different products and systems. That eventually will come down to the question: is it worth it? Only MG can tell. We cannot control that part unfortunately.

In theory this sounds better than it may actually be. The MG is keenly priced. Allowing over the air updates does require quite a bit more security planning and layers of encryption etc. If you want to sure that the car’s safety system is secure then it may well be essential to charge more for the vehicle. Certainly a lot more work and staff would be involved, I believe. In general I would like to see it but one of the considerations is how secure the system would be.

i am on R30, very laggy system. i am going to ask for R46. i think that a new car should at least come up to date from the dealership.

Hi Jerry thanks again for a great video, my biggest issue with my MG4 is the unreliability of Apple Car Play, drops out all the time, tried many different cables no success, should I be taking it to the dealer to get assessed? Has anyone else been having these issues with Apple CarPlay in MG4 Essence?

In an age where every Apple and Android smart phone allow OTA updates to their operating systems, where Tesla have no problem with OTA updates, this refusal by MG to allow OTA updates is downright stupid and counterproductive. I was all set to buy an MG4 until this insanity was pointed out to me. I’ll just wait until something better comes along…

This is purely my take, no offence. The whole EV market and buyer expectation are affected by Tesla to a crazy level. No frunk = bad No OTA = bad No big responsive screen = bad No auto pilot = bad No sunroof = bad And the list goes on By no means I’m saying those techs are not great. It is nice addition to a vehicle but Toyota never ever had OTA updates and they still sell tons. I would rather to have the manufacture focus on things like motor, chassis, battery, and safety.

Like explained in the video, we sales people don’t even get notified about system update. You generally don’t need an update if your vehicle is working fine.

@@JerryPanandCars Hi Jerry, kindly I have to disagree, we all have small issues (left start button forgot what is it set up, TPM phantom fault, random loss of traffic sign recognition and so on), and we all can live with this, but doesn't mean we want to. So rather than call the dealership every now and then to ask about whether these issues were addressed or not, would be easier to publish the update descriptions, and the list of improvements. This isn't cost much, no security concerns, and it would beneficial to costumers and even the service people as well. To be fair, we all learning about this model (including the tech people at the dealership) and would be easier to everyone to be a little more organized.

@@arpa592 I was saying this website is not available but I definitely did not mean I don't wish to have a website like this. From the owner's point of view, it is absolutely great to have something like this so people know what is being fixed, etc. I agree 100%. Unfortunately, from the MG's point of view, this is just going to create chaos. Any small update release will result in clients calling the dealership for update visits. This is simply not viable in the current state.

Hi Jerry, been watching your videos for a while now. We had huge issues at the mg dealership saying we cannot just ask for updates, you have to ask for updates by saying there's a problem with the car. We were very confused and couldn't understand why, if there's an update, the dealer would not apply it. We had a big argument and they said we must not say the word update, we must rather say, we have this issue and would like it fixed. I'm just curious then, if an update exists and is not meant to be updated, why did it exist as an update in the first place? 😮

Thanks for the comment. I have mentioned that on the system update video. Unfortunately, it is not compulsory to carry every update for every MG4 on the road. At least this is not a written rule from MG NZ or MG AU. For service centre to carry an update, it will cost them labour. MG will not cover the labour if it is not a warranty issue. That then become a cost for the service centre or the owner.

At the end of the day, apparently we needed to ask for OPD, which I know have learnt, is not an update, but an unlock with a code? We're taking it to another mg dealer, they said no problem, it's quick, they got the code to do it. So I'm wondering, this dealership I went with, originally, likely didn't really know how to unlock OPD.

Why is OTA only being considered for essense and not excite? Is it cause of the 4G sim card? How does remote control work in Excite if there is no data connection? I thought it was there.

Both cars have 4G connection. That's why both support iSmart App. Only the Essence has system update option pre-loaded in the system. That means future development is a possibility.

Jerry, in the menu there is an option to update the navi maps using USB. Does it actually work?

Love the videos. Very informative. Also love our MG4. One question you might be able to answer please. When setting up charging from within the car quite often if I set the car to a charge limit of 80 per cent the car will ignore it and charge to 100 per cent. I know other people have experienced the same but haven't been able to get an answer. Any ideas why this is? Thankyou

Hi Jerry. I have an MG ZS Ev, which is 8 months old. KZbin music app on android auto would not work unless I unplug and replug usb or wireless AA dongle. Would you recommend a particular dealer who would not charge to check if there is a firmware update for the info Entertainment system which could fix this issue?

Find MG not customer service friendly...no advise, information etc on updates improvement. Even ignore requests to repair warranty issues. BYD next time....never again the worst car company in Australia

If you watches this video, updates are not that important if your car is driving fine. Ignoring warranty issues is the particular dealership problem not related to MG. Just change to a better dealer

My MG4 works fine, but there are annoying things like One Pedal Driving not being remembered or having to wait until battery is under 90% to enable it. Also annoying that it’s not part of the re-gen control that you can control from your steering wheel. Would ‘fixes’ like this come in a system update? Do dealers get release notes with each update saying what is fixed? Thanks again for the great videos.
