MG5 Trophy 2023 review - the electric estate | Road Test

As the world’s ‘only electric estate’, the MG5 has some fairly big shoes to fill and a lot to live up to if it wants to make its mark on the electric car industry. Thanks to some (much needed) updated looks, a smooth and reliable drive, and a price tag that won’t empty the bank account, the MG5 is poised to take the EV market by storm.
With top-of-the-line gadgets, an impressive 0-62mph speed of 7.7 seconds, a whopping range of 235 miles, and an interior that screams luxury, MG aims to show that premium electric driving doesn’t have to come at a premium price tag.
But can the MG5 really do it all? In this episode of Road Test, Duncan Vincent puts the MG5 through its paces to see if MG really has managed to provide affordable luxury, or if the world’s first electric estate is still missing the mark.

I was looking in the rear view mirror and yes I could see red lights when the regen was happening - however, a passenger then noticed that the brake pedal was depressing by itself ! so that's how it's done - I did not notice it as I was not looking down

I was all ready to pull the trigger on an xpower... until I found-out yesterday that it's not certified in the UK for a roof rack... 😢 The MG5 would be the next contender,but doesn't have 4x4..😢 If only the xpower was certified for a roof rack in the UK... or..an estate version of the xpower..🙂 but please..no glass roofs...

I booked a MG4 test drive and when I got the the showroom I saw the MG5 facelift. I didn’t bother testing the MG4, tested the 5, loved it and bought it. Not seen many on the road yet either.

Good demo....I was getting convinced this was the estate for me.....then you had to mention the Porsche ...😅😅😅😅😅

It's almost hard to believe that it comes down to a choice between an MG and a Porsche, but the MG is definitely better value.

The 4 is a great car, but the 5 has a much nicer dash, bigger boot, and roof bars. It would be great if it came with an LFP battery. But I still think I’d pick the 5.

It's a good choice, certainly offers plenty of practicality in an overall strong package.

Does the Adaptive Cruise Control use regenerative braking or does it use friction brakes like the MG ZS EV?

The mirror cameras don’t cover blind spot detection on my model. It’s just part of the 360 camera array.
