I made a bit of a mistake in the positioning of the clutch hose on the slave cylinder in the last video I did. Now I am man enough to admit when I'm wrong and have made this video to show the mistake I made so hopefully no one else will make this mistake

My husband used to own this car when he was a student about 10 years ago, always wondered what happened to Dec (Declan)! He has just bought a white 1973 roadster that we used as our wedding car 3 weeks ago, and then did the NC500 in for our honeymoon.

Made this exact mistake. Didn’t realize what was going wrong until I came to this video. Thank you for showing all the steps, including plunging the slave cylinder when closing the bleed nipple. Thank you thank you

Shoulda watched the David Russell-Wilks video on replacing the slave cylinder :D That's the only reason I didn't make the same mistake!

Yes, David is a good friend of mine, he lives less than a mile away from me. He knows his stuff when it comes to MGBs, much like I do with Triumphs, well you live and learn that things aren't always as they seem when they come out of the box 👍

I did exactly the same a few years ago, easy mistake to make when the bleed nipples is fitted in the wrong place on a new part.

It's good to know I'm not the only one to do it. It just looks very much like it's meant to go there straight out of the box. I suppose it's anything to save a few penny on packaging 👍

Hi Steve, I thought that you want the bleed nipple to be at the highest spot where the air is going to rise to.

Hi Mark, I 100% agree with you with this, and in 99% of the time you are correct, however with the MGB, as I found out, there are a few funny features like this, with the bleed nipple being level with the hose and not at the bottom. It's also like it on the brakes with the rear wheel cylinders. The bleed nipple is at the bottom, not just on my car, but on them all. Why MG chose to do it like this I'll never know, but it don't half make bleeding the rear brakes and clutch awkward

Hi Steve, I just fitted a new master, slave, steel pipe and flexible hose to my 1975 MGB. I took internet advice and put the bleed nipple at the highest point. It makes the flexible hose run a bit "nasty" as you saw yourself. The clutch bled very easily once I got the master cylinder primed. It had been sitting for a year. I used a vacuum pump at the slave cylinder. I am working on an 1989 Chevy Blazer S10 4WD right now and I see that the rear slave cylinders have the bleed nipple at the highest point too.

Honest video!… Why do you never wear protective gloves?

Cheers Pete, I do sometimes when dealing with oil, but in all honestly I just prefer to use barrier cream. I find with gloves you loose the feel for things 👍

Yeah I hv to replace my slave cylinder and rubber hose too. I'm going to try to do it without letting the master run dry. Is it a big deal if the master run's dry regarding bleeding? Also, I knew about certain slave cylinders being packaged with the bleeder in the wrong port. I knew this because of KZbin and just looking at how the old was on my MGB - hose out the back, bleeder up on the side.

If it runs dry while bleeding it won't make much odds as the seals are already wet and lubricated, so you should be ok 👍

@@SteveDentonClassics Thank you. I'll surely will find out. To save grief, I was going to immediately plug the hard line once I disconnected it so the master stays full. And during bleeding I'll still get the old fluid replaced with new. But if it's not really necessary..... I thought it would keep air out and make bleeding faster.

Think it’s sorted been running rich got carbs sorted out last week looks like plugs were choked up on carbon
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 жыл бұрын
Thing is, if you run on 99 V power, then you need to tune the carbs for it and stick with it. Whatever fuel you choose to run on, you need to stick with that fuel, and have the carbs tuned to it, you’ll run sweeter with v power, get better fuel economy and added octane gives a bigger bang, so increase in power 👍🏻

First off hope you are feeling better and I’ve just seen your flight lucky lad ,if I can I would like some advice I filled up with fina super 2weeks ago took my mga out for the day it ran like a dog got her home and sorted the cards out it ran lovely took her to Ashbourne and back about 25mile I was a happy lad went to the last car show of the yr at amber gate next door to the British car experience running lovely filled up with shell v power 2 miles in its missing idling on 3 got there left her for 2hrs started fine ran alright 10 mins in running rough bo you think it’s the fuel or just coincidence 😳ps missing your Saturday morning trials and tribulations but I have to ask did they let you take control of the spit👍
@SteveDentonClassics
@SteveDentonClassics 3 жыл бұрын
Might be a coincidence, the only fuel I use is Shell Super V Power in all my classics. I'd be checking the basis first like plugs, leads cap, valve adjustment, compression and fueling from the carbs. I did take the controls for a a little bit, the Spitfire is a very sensitive aeroplane. Loved every minute of it 👍

It's an easy mistake to make .was there any symptoms / change in performance of the clutch Steve in doing it the wrong way round ????
@SteveDentonClassics

In all honestly, it made no difference other than the hose being under less strain when it was put in the correct position 👍
