I don't think this album can be compared to there others. The songs were made 11 years ago for a live festival, its more a collection of ideas they had, rather than an official album. It was probably relesed for die hard fans and overall its still worth a listen.

I think this release was a gift for the fans, and perhaps an experiment back to their more psychedelic origins, now that they are no longer signed to Columba Records and have decided to go independent. And I thought the sound made a lot of sense for the time they did it, right after Congratulations.

@Lunarimoths Maybe saying it’s their best album is a stretch, but this is definitely every bit as good as Congratulations and the self-titled album. If I die alone on that hill, so be it. Any fan of psychedelic rock will long be familiar with experimental live jams and instrumentals of their favourite bands. MGMT were only keeping the 60’s spirit alive with music like this.

I think nearly every style they've done has been fantastic honestly, I love the very internet-y pop sound on Little Dark Age, the sort of surf-prog on Congratulations, the alt dance hits on OC and the space rock on its second half, and I even like the idea of their s/t alone (even if I can't really get into the album as a whole). Feels like they're trying to hit every corner of psychedelia and I'm all for it

@@WiloPolis03 I wholeheartedly agree with you! Even though I'm saying LDA is my least favourite, it's still at least an 8 to me. Imo there's just some unique magic to their less pop oriented songs that no band can replicate. Still, I like the direction they're going in with In the afternoon and As you move through the world, so I'm excited for anything they come up with :)
@WiloPolis03

@@KoenRH2803 For sure! Not even quite sure which sound I prefer best personally. Although I actually think their less "pop"-y songs on LDA kind of get slept on, I really like the hypnagogic pop-inspired cooldown moments like Days That Got Away or Hand It Over. Seems like they've always been great at soundscapes, whether they're created through jangly guitars or heavy synths

@ghiidra The advanced chord progressions, the layered mixing, the emotional resonance, and the unique genre-blending definitely makes this album at least an equal contender with Congratulations and the self-titled album, in my eyes. Any psychedelic rock fan who’s used to listening to long instrumental live jams and bootlegs of their favourite bands is no stranger to this kind of music. And this particular album is so damn unique and one-of-a-kind. A gem like this should not be ignored. Only Animal Collective have done anything similar to this.

@@psychedelicpiper999 You're all over these comments being salty. Everyone has their tastes and that's fine. Ik I'll almost never agree with fantano on psychedelic music and I'll probably never agree with you on pop music. MGMT is one of my favorite bands and I love this live album, but saying it and self titled are miles better than LDA and Oracular Spectacular is kinda ridiculous imo

He doesn’t ever seem to listen to vinyl. With a name like theneedledrop, you’d expect him to have a turntable in every video, and to have videos where he talks about his gear. Never happened, never will.
