I bumped into Andrew Vanwyngarden in Birmingham a few years ago on the way to their concert - Andrew is like the nicest guy ever, we walked him to a noodle shop cause he didn't know the way! Also while the warm-up band were playing he came into the crowd with a fake twirly moustache and sunglasses and nobody recognised him, and he jjust stood there twiddling it like a villain :D

I think a lot of people don't understand what this song is about. It starts of really shocking and if you don't listen you'll get a depression message from it, ''your life is a lie'', But i believe this song is actually quite positive, it tells the listener that their life is a lie and that your friend's are not your real friends, but it also says that you will survive, and that you don't have to depend on others to make you happy. I agree with this song a lot, people depend too much on others to understand them but sometimes people just can't, but you shouldn't let that get you down, You CAN survive on your own and if you break free from the lie that you need your ''friends''. For anyone who's feeling depressed out there: I'm sorry that circumstances have been so poor for you that you to feel so worthless, But things get better eventually, some people need help and if you are in need of help please seek out a therapist or a close friend, But don't depend only on them, try to make yourself happy by doing what you love and don't care what others may think. I hope everyone reading this are doing good, and if you're not then i hope you'll feel good soon. People out there love you, no matter who you are

Salt ,good point ,and good point made in reply#1 . my son was in the band till a year or two ago .I told him why you are in the band try to see ifyou can write on , you know credits for $ongs .Anyway my son won't talk to me for the most part and i thought maybe he helped write this song lol .Best songs come from conversations,well mine did anyay .I DIGRESS , like REM did in early days , ...well r.e.m. "lifted" lyrics from obscure well written pieces of literature ,and the boys that are mgmt the duo went to weslyan ,a good ct.college , and i imagine they cop some lyrics or ideas the same way sometimes .BUT I think when someone is telling you in a song your life is a lie , maybe it is not just to say it is all an illusion , it may mean you are a "hip -ocrit "...I like the song besides my baggage real or imaginedwith it .I think the keyboard player is all that for new pop ,and the lead singer is a good write and cute enough to be a front man for a band Sony backs . who knows ? I could be lying

Why is it that i don't enjoy an mgmt song the first time, but i absolutely love it the second?
@fraserdavidson690010 жыл бұрын
I think it has to do with the fact that these guys have heard the song 8 billion times as they record it, and have added layer after layer to it. When you first hear it, it sounds like a cacophony, but as you listen more, the layers become apparent, and makes the song a tasty ear morsel. I find the same thing with my favourite band Mother Mother, at first listen it sounds like a really simple song, but after a couple listens it becomes a multi layered, always new and refreshing song. I've listened to their last album almost non stop for 2 years and it still is interesting to listen too. Just my $0.02
@HellaranzzOps10 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. Thanks for the input man.
@fraserdavidson690010 жыл бұрын
I think that there is genuinely good and bad music. You could listen to the latest teen idol endlessly and still not hear a good song. There is the fact that you are naturally inclined to certain sounds and styles, and if i was forced to listen to soft rock all day long I would grow to resent it even more than I already do. Occasionally I will hear music from a totally different genre that blows my mind away. I usually listen to alt rock, but sometimes some chemical brothers is exactly what I feel like. There is all so the survival of the fittest (in introducing people to a band) in the case of music where a certain song will be designed to be catchy, and good for radio play, and that song will attract you to the bands other stuff. Ill admit that my first introduction to MGMT was kids, and time to pretend. But they have some really cool (and weird) stuff out side their pop hits. Thanks for all of your nice comments. most of the time comments on you tube end up with wanna be trolls acting like total dick heads, so I have very much so enjoyed the intelligent banter. ;)

I think this song is about a perceived reality that our civilization has fallen prey to. We are conditioned to get a job, to earn money, to survive. We focus too much on material existance and we are blinded from the reality that is in front of us. We as a civilization work far more than is necessary. We should have a more realistic reality, which does not include constructed paradigms designed to keep us from achieving our higher potential.

yeah dude! nicely done :3 every day we face problems, and in order to properly handle those problems we have to intelligently examine information, and one of the things we have to do in order to do that is bring our background beliefs to bear. so not having a well pruned worldview has a negative takeaway accross the board, even emotionally, which further contrives things and makes it harder for other people as well. "all the scheming soulless creatures cant find dreamers honey in the hive, when its right beneath their nose"
@RyanByer9 жыл бұрын
Nice analysis, but a few questions come to mind. What 'reality' are we missing from by being in this materialistic society? What does it mean to have a more 'realistic reality'? And what is meant by 'achieving a higher potential'? It sounds good to say, but what does saying any of that actually mean? I have a much more cynical view of this song you see. I think it is saying how life itself is a lie. The idea of 'meaning' itself is a lie created self-aggrandize what it must mean to be alive. There is no real, or inherent meaning, no real or inherent higher sense of being. There is simply being, and the embellishment of that sense of being with meaning and purpose is a false pretense organized for selfish means by something called life for what amounts to selfishness.
@Gregarius919 жыл бұрын
Ryan Byer Thank-you. Reality is subjective, and unique to each individual, However the collective reality "Common views shared by the majority" is in a perpetual state of desperation. It is unnatural to constantly worry whether or not you will have enough money to eat, or pay bills. Consistently making people have to work for money wears us down, and distances us from who we really are. In a more realistic reality we would not have monetary systems, and jobs would focus more on increasing counciousness. Everyone has potential, but not everyone realizes that. We are being distanced from our spirits. Our pineal glands are calcified by the Flouride in our water, This gland is a gateway to our subconscious. With this gland being chemically altered we are more subservient to the current system. Achieving a higher potential would entail aligning our bodies with our spirits. We can do this through Meditation, eliminating Flouride from your water, eating healthier, and demanding change in governmental structure.

The writer of the song himself states, generally, the song is meant to be used as a tool for empowerment, perhaps even a weapon, for those who would attempt to tell you how to live your life.

why not? bad trips? bad trips aren't really bad trips they are the trips that give you that asswhoping you "need" i don't believe you learn anything from a psychedelic in a recreational setting, you gotta have a purpose when you do these drugs otherwise they punish you.

Why? Because they arent singing about sex or voilence? They are singing the truth and we need more of that Go hide under rock because you wont obviosuly be able to handle the truth
