I think it's very healthy. Acceptance is the first step to healing. You gonna be alright. Heaven and Hell are all right here right now. Drugs, meditation, all that jazz leads you to roughly the same point at different speeds hopefully. Soon enough you'll realize your action in the immediate here and now is ultimately all you have control over in this crazy roller coaster we call life, and that they ripple outward like a stone in the pool that is our here and now.So understandably, killing yourself can be a tantalizing thing when you feel nothing matters. But cheesy as it may be, everything you do has a value greater than 0. You may not feel as though you are a 1, but you are. Infinite and nothing all at once. You have the potential, you have something no one else in your immediate space can provide. You may not see it, but others do. It might be something as small as making the best fucking brownies out of anyone you know, but goddamit you're buddies would miss those brownies more than you can ever realize. Once you realize how even the tiniest effect you have on others around you and how much of an effect even saying something nice to someone can have, it seems meaningless to kill yourself as well, and thus you are free. Nothing matters except everything. Hug your cat, eat some good food, smoke a bowl, do whatever you do, but push yourself to the positive. Do constructive things, stay away from negative people and thought patterns. This kind of music does have a negative effect if it's all you listen to (I've been on a DIIV and sadboi music kick myself), but in total it's a positive gain when can make time to reflect and not ruminate. Become a successful failure. Through your stumbles you are greater than those who have never faltered if you allow yourself.

Story of the video: 00:00 - dude wakes up, eats breakfast and goes to work - he performs magic at a bar 00:52 - the audience are concerned, a spark appears above the dude's head 00:57 - his life flashes before his eyes. Or at least, everything he has done today 01:34 - it turns out the spark was a result of the stage light collapsing. It lands on his head, causing a near death experience. DMT is released in his brain, causing hallucinations. 02:05 - he wakes up in the hospital, barely in touch with reality. He has further hallucinations where people, patterns and behaviours relating to his day are coexisting. 03:13 - this part is really open to interpretation. The hallucinations relate to blood, skeletons and a possible representation of hell. This is followed by dissolution, suggesting he has died. Just wanted to put my thoughts out there!

I agree but I also think that the wife staged the death and hired the guy with the toothpick to set the light up to fall and his last hallucination of his wife is him realizing that she staged his death. "Dont you got somewhere to be at 730, I've got some work to do" meaning set up your death and the lyrics are her singing to him that she will laugh when he dies, shes not that nice, go fuck yourself, and she will eat your heart out

When the woman says "eat your heart out" and the background becomes a sort of arterial web of soft tissue, then that pattern of skulls flashes in front of your eyes. Probably my favorite part of the song at 2:43 . This video was uploaded 4 days after I got hit by a car for the first time. The car was going 35 mph and caused me to go flying around 12 feet away, I ragdolled through the air, and my left shoe flew off. I was able to get right back up after I hit the ground, and the worst injury I got from that accident was a scrape on my left wrist. The doctor at the hospital told me that I was really lucky, and ever since then, I've felt like I either should have died, or I actually did die but was somehow transported to an alternate universe where I survived with the least amount of injury. I only really got into this album last month, but if I had watched this the day it was uploaded, I would have been convinced that I had actually died 4 days earlier, and this song was the universe's way of making fun of me for dying. 2 and a half years later, it vaguely seems that way. It just adds to the depth of this song for me, and makes me love it and appreciate it more in a strange way.

Well, you dont exactly pop DMT. But also everyone will experience it at least once (the end) in your life. Your brain stores this, smoking DMT triggers a release of it. However it's just the tip of the iceberg, we wont know exactly how much floods our brain till our inevitable end.

This song gave me the courage to quit my old job. This album just came out and my mental health was at its lowest, somehow I believed that being paid so low and treated so horribly by my boss was all I deserved. And then this song? I always had the urge to play it throughout my entire work day on my desk. I guess I got so pumped by how my frustration felt justified, and then I finally quit. Since then whenever I play this song, I remember the victorioust reeling of leaving that job. I was so wrong, I did deserve better and got a nicer job elsewhere.

@Micoolaw7 жыл бұрын
Junkers maybe something along the lines of how the monotony of the same tasks that you do in everyday life, that you don’t really think about while doing, end up influencing who and what you are more than you realize. For example the first morning he wakes he reaches in the blue loops cereal to eat, the second day he does the same but it is caught from a different angle. Then when he ‘dies’ there is that scene where everything is made of the blue loops cereal. And there’s also the scene where everything is covered in eyeballs, which references the eyeball on his keychain, which he picked up each day when going to perform
@juanhenao86877 жыл бұрын
I feel like this video is meant to be seen on acid as you notice ever detail and put everything into "the bigger pictyre" also the beginning and end of the video are very similar as the screen becomes smaller in the end and you don't really realize it until it's super small. Idk just a thought
@taurusthefool7 жыл бұрын
It almost seems like the guy performs and his wife is there to support him. When the light fixture falls and hits him in the head and kills him. Then he gets stuck in a time loop, almost as though he has to continue living through the same shit. Like a "purgatory" or something. Maybe I'm reading to much into it, but also when only a part of his eye drops, it's almost like saying half of him was already dead anyways. This sums up to me, 'you live, you die. So go smoke and get high'
@taurusthefool7 жыл бұрын
Almost seems too that after he's dead "which you can tell when he dies.. by how everything goes from "reality" to "unrealistic" Everyone there seems to move on without the guy, like his life didn't necessarily have a deep impact on any of them. As if they all kept going through the motions of living. This really showcases how small that we all are in retrospect.

I don't think the "I'm not that nice" part is being narrated by the magician like most seem to assume. The lyrics have multiple narrators/characters saying things (both in regards to the video and just the song itself) The magician seems pretty genuine and nice, both in his magical displays and when he claps for the woman at the end, so I was confused at first. But after watching the whole thing a bunch of times, I think it's *her* that's "not that nice." At the end, when she turns into a monster, he's realizing what she is. She's mean and she's evil, and is going to eat his heart out, like she's seen saying to him. He also wakes up at 7:08 while she's still sleeping, so the "don't you have somewhere to be at 7:30" seems like something that she'd be saying to him and not vice versa. He's the one waking up early at 7:08 and rushing out the door for where he has to be. So again, something in the lyrics that she's the one saying and not him. The only parts I think are "narrated" by him for sure are the "Baby, I'm ready, I'm ready, ready, ready to blow my lid off" and "Baby, I’m ready, I'm ready, ready, ready to blow my brains out" - which he says right before a 3rd person narrator comes in saying "You died..." etc. They're kind of like fragments of an argument being remembered by him. On a related note, you'd think out of everyone in the crowd, she'd be supportive and enthusiastic, but instead she looks disinterested and apathetic. She claps and patronizes him a little bit for his acts, which he does with genuine enthusiasm, but she doesn't seem to really care or think much of it. It kind of seems like a metaphor for relationships where similar things happen. Just because you sing "I'm not that nice" doesn't mean you're talking about yourself, I think it's talking about her. It's a little more abstract, but that's my own interpretation of it - which no doubt is shaped by my own personal experiences. There's a lot of ways to interpret and relate to the music & video, which is part of what makes it so good. : )

I think you're right. To me this video is about someone who wasted his life trying to amuse people who thought nothing of him. He wanted their adoration, and they mocked him for it. In the end he dies a meaningless death, his brain flooded with chemicals leading to one last trip. On this trip he sees the universe for what it is. What his life was, and his final revelation being that the woman he cared for will hardly be affected by his death. She only used him for what ever role he served in their relationship. Essentially cannibalizing him. He dies and is added to a mass grave where all of us will join. His horror serving no substantial purpose, as though his life was ultimately a personal hell. Forever buried and forgotten in a sea of lives like his.

Two caveats, 1. It is also posited online that when you die you tend to relive memories as your brain becomes more oxygen deprived I believe as you mentioned. Moreover the real question I am left with is what does that time perception feel like? If it takes 7 minutes or so for the brain to completely expend all oxygen, how long until you fade to black? 2. The look of excitement of the magicians face for his wife is completely crushing (noted by the ring on his finger), his consciousness realizing some semblance of normal and familiarity - hence why he claps so happily at the sight of her. But he realizes either in fear or shock that he is dead when she transforms into a mass of grey matter spewing blood like a hemorrhage - as if his consciousness finally connected the dots and is telling him is wrong. Tragic ending.

I think its about dealing with depression that comes specificaly from fear to death, more than about the experience of death itself. Great video, great song, never disappoints.

I am a huge fan of this music video, simply because it has it's own little story separate from the song, while also perfectly fitting the atmosphere of the song. It's a really cool idea that was executed great in this video.

I love and fear this song. This is by far the most accurate portrayal of how the mind/soul slowly withers to black after a morbid event. You're reality slowly stops existing. your brain becomes mush. The slow realization that YOU are fading. In the end... Black.

For me it was more about wishful thinking. Suicidal thinking. Which is why the part about feeling nothing after dying sounded so optimistic. I dunno why, but to me it seems the main character is laden with guilt (“I’m mean and I’m evil, don’t call me nice”) and is longing for release. In any case the way you describe loving and fearing this song is spot on. It’s an awesome piece, but it also shows you the dark side of life quite nakedly.
@gsmooth42793 жыл бұрын
@@FabricioVargas91 that’s the thing. Death as we currently theorise it to be isn’t just darkness and shadow. It’s a nothingness that we quite literally cannot imagine.

The second part of the video is a loop of the first part... it looks like he’s rummaging through the most vivid parts of his memory, which would be the last day he experienced.. so he experiences it in a more and more distorted way. Until he no longer has the mental capacity to remember anything or understand his situation. His wife, his most emotionally powerful and recognizable entity comes into fruition but not in a pleasant way. Probably because he’s clinging on to consciousness harder than he should be. This is apparent because he observes as much as he can until it blurs and blacks out. He probably should have just let go.. but maybe his mind wasn’t at peace enough to do so.. what a horrible death.. I don’t know how I feel about this song. What I do know is that it’s stuck in my head. Dammit MGMT what have you done. This is like a death video except you get to look inside someone’s mind as it happens. A whole new level of gruesome.. and people who truly have had bad trips or ptsd of some sort like myself will be horribly triggered by something like this.. I still love MGMT though and I’m glad they push the boundaries of art so much to come up with this horribly beautiful piece

Not only that is accurate I also believe that he was murdered by his wife, since the only time she ever smiles is when he's fully dead, doesn't seem like she was ever happy with him and even in the beginning when he 'wakes up' she turns away from him and the lyrics start with a very heavy tone of loathing which I don't believe it's from him since he doesn't show any malice towards her.

Soap when I was 18 and visited home from boot camp (marine corps) I overdosed on shrooms due to inexperience. I know it’s not lethal but I took WAY too much somewhere around 20 grams.. my trip involved all of the violence I was afraid of experiencing in war. It is now 3 1/2 years later... I plan to go back into psychedelics the right way when I get out of the service
