Too much of build up about MGR, not many people knew about him. It was always speculation and roumours of him being a great person, or some say he destroyed the career of many other people. He was a very secretive person. People like me have lived his age. His governance was the worst Tamilnadu had ever seen, He did not know anything about governance and administration. He destroyed the economy of TN, the IT industry went to Bangalore during his time. He opened up saraya kadai, brought back liqour shops. Only thing was he improved the noon meal scheme and also gave his name, while the money was from public. But by that time, India had good production of food grains. I don't know what people keep harping about him. We all had to go to far off horrible places like Gujrat , UP, Bihar for work. Tamils had to go as cheap labour digging holes, breaking stones in Quarry, digging wells all over India. It was very terrible times. He also destroyed the higher education system, by reducing the standards. After he came to power, everybody passing in exams became very common. Before his times, SSLC from Tamilnadu was like a PhD. People use to fail in all classes, they would not promote unless they passed. So, in my sixth standard, I had guys who were in their early 20s failing in several classes. Afte MGR came to power, all of them became pass. I got 83 in english, without studying for more than 12 hours in my 10th. They demanded 10,000 for college admissions for BSc. Can you imagine ? So, I use to travel by 2 or 3 busses and a local train for 3 hours each way to college. Earlier, if you pass SSLC one could get admission without lancham. Because they passed everybody enmasse more people for college admissions , so graft. Worst chief minister. Madras became a refugee for rowdies and thugs from all over the state. I have never met a single person, who ever told me MGR was of great personal help to him or her.
