Bow tutorial: • MH4G/MH4U: Bow Tutorial
(Using JPN version, sorry. This is the new 3DS)
I whiff a lot in this ^^
New series where I take an overpowered weapon into a HR Zinogre hunt just to show you how I like to use it. This is a great quest for practicing new weapons since Zinogre is predictable and starts in the same area. I choose HR so that the videos would be short and easy to watch. Sorry, it's audio commentary only!
This series is meant to be casual so there may be mistakes, even carting (?!), but that's okay. Also, this is by NO MEANS the only way or even best way to use the weapon.
My goal is to have fun, and show off how I like to wield them and if you have never used one of these weapons before, maybe it will get you interested.

Hey gaijin, I do love playing the bow. But it does get out of my comfort zone when I don't have a power shot bow. It seems that I just can't seem to gauge my distance correctly in regards to Arc Shots. Are these shots frequently used in game or it is just for convenience? Would love to have your input in this matter.

+gaijin hunter Is that frame drop I am seeing at 1:14 and possibly 1:26? I ask because I also experience sometimes, even playing solo; it happens most often it seems when the monster spawns. I was wondering if you experience this as well? And it doesn't seem to happen in generations, only 4U.

An easy solution for having easy Dash Juice (unlimited stamina for some time) If you can gem in or have Micologist (Mushrooms Skill) you can farm in the caravaan Mopeshrooms which are really cheap to do and you can have 10 of them in the bag per quest instead of 5 dash juices. I didn't even speak about the other mushrooms, Dragon toadstool are expensive to farm but they have the same effect as a max potion and you can have 10 per quest. Theres more but those two would be the most important for a Bow user the only you really want is the first only though. This applies for any weapon with dash juices needs or easing.

kem jeng on I used it a lot with CB and Gs but still with things like Ds doesn't cut it if you need to evade and be in superdemon mode. It may work on bow though but haven't tried on it but the thing with bow is it needs to attack without stop or you lose Dps. The thing is why have one skill that only recovers stamina faster when you can use another easy to gem (2pts. 1 slot for +10 to activate) that can give unlimited stamina and a really good recover and other things. That skill isn't useful either with a lance if you block multi hit moves but with the mopeshroom as dash juice there's no problem. That skill is really understimated and is better than it seems.

I use the new bow controls! 4U is the first game I tried picking up the bow in, and I main hammer, so holding R to charge and shoot just felt more natural to me. Maybe it's different if you're used to weapons where an R-charge isn't your main mode of attack?

Do you know about the specifics regarding arc shots and whether or not it's good to use them when you can because they are more damaging and whatnot? I know you didn't use any here but I'm hoping to learn because arc shots seem to be really muddy with info.

Actually the new controls (as I see it) aim to be more similar to the PSP controls, where you could run while charging AND adjust the view angle at the same time, but with the semi lock-on with L is very easy to be precise for seasoned bow users. Nice video as always Gaijin!

Arc shots are trickier to land in this game than they were in 3 Ultimate, or so I think, but they're still very powerful if you ever get the opportunity to throw one out without messing with allies if you're playing multiplayer. In this video, for instance, while Zinogre is charging up is a perfect time to toss out an arc shot. It's also very useful how arc shots can inflict exhaust and KO damage. If your bow supports them, it's a good idea to get used to them. Also, I noticed you only carried power coatings. Granted, I know Zinogre wasn't going to last long enough anyway, but I see on Kiranico that this bow supports exhaust and blast coatings as well. Exhaust can be very useful for obvious reasons, and blast coatings, while usually somewhat underwhelming, are still very much worth bringing for this bow, because it has no element/status of its own. Blast Coatings are essentially free additional damage for this bow. I suppose Power Coatings still outclass it, but you know, maybe if you end up running out, might as well use them then. And I used the traditional controls. I tried the new bow controls for a while, and I don't think I had any particular issues with it, but then I just changed to traditional and haven't changed back since. I've grown used to this setup and I'm perfectly satisfied with it. If you don't want to use dash juice (like me), I think Stamina recovery up is amazing. Actually looking at possibilities for a bow set with an armour set search, and from the looks of it I could accomplish something like... Regios Cap Akantor Plate Rath Soul Guards Z Kushala Wind Wrap X Kushala Shank X Talisman: +6 Load Up OO No weapon slots required Gets me: Stam Recov Up Normal/Rapid Up Load Up Critical Eye+1 Focus Looks pretty good if you ask me. Now since it has Load Up, it's obviously intended for the Kama Sedition, so with a different bow, like the one in this video, I wonder if I could accomplish something even better...

I use the type 2 I think that's what it's called where you charge up the attack with R. I like it since I can evade using the normal evade button. I have two questions though. Can you cut a monster's tail with a bow? Does Blast shot type do more damage then Normal 5?
@jacobfarrow100
@jacobfarrow100 9 жыл бұрын
To answer your question about cutting tails with Bow, yes, they can technically cut tails... With the super weak melee attack ("A" button). I once cut off a G Rank Rathian's tail solo in 3U, but it took almost the entire hunt. I'd suggest not trying to, unless you absolutely need a tail and refuse to use another weapon. In that case, I'd suggest Close-Range Coatings if your bow can use them, as they increase the melee damage and "sharpness level" of the melee attack. I put sharpness level in quotes because since the Bow is a ranged weapon, it doesn't have a normal sharpness level. I believe the melee attack is equivalent to Green, and the coating brings it up to White. The coating also increases close-range arrow damage, but that won't help with cutting tails. Hope I helped, and happy hunting!

Hey GH. Bow user here. I personally like the new scheme despite using it during 3U. Reason why: I kind it a lot easier for me to aim while running. Since I use an old 3DS with no circle pad pro, all I had was the D-pad, which I couldn't use while moving, and the touch screen. Move with left hand, aim and charge with right, apply warheads on foreheads. Having to aim standing still was the death of me during several kinds of hunts in 3U and I gave the new scheme a chance in 4U. Being able to track the monster while moving has saved my bacon more times than I can count.

Is it worth using the Arc Shot at all? If I'm not mistaken, it does KO damage when you hit a monster's head but realistically, you're not going to get that KO. So besides trying to deal KO damage, why else would you want to use it?
@NicholasGouw
@NicholasGouw 9 жыл бұрын
Conor McDonald I use Arc Shot mostly to apply status effects on monsters as it hits multiple times, more than just relying on spread shots. Also arc shots can pepper the backs of large monsters that you might not be able to hit and possibly break them.

@mahius19
@mahius19 9 жыл бұрын
+SpeedrunsTeddy You can still switch to older bow control. The old bow control uses X to fire and hold R to make the aim arc appear. The new one has the two buttons switched around. In some ways it's better, if your charging a shot and want to fire a special using the A button in addition, it's easier with R+A than it is X+A as you have to maneuver your finger from holding X down to also press A while maintaining the X. I never used bow that much in previous games, but I understand how the new controls can be initially challenging and unfamiliar. New controls also allow for camera control via the circle pad pro/N3DS nipple.

New controls are way better than old ones with circle pad pro or new 3ds. I played MH3U mainly as bow, and the first time I tried the new control, I just fallen in love with it. Anyway, if you want to give a chance to a spread bow sometime, give it a try to the Brachy one. It's incredible strong.

hi! i've been a fan of the bow since i first played mh3u (to be honest i played freedom 2 for like...30 mins and i really REALLY sucked at it (it was also my first mh and it was not even mine) ) and i've allways been wondering how does the shot work. i've been searching info about it and i've found a large amount of contradictions everywhere. some say that spread is life while rapid sucks, others says rapid is awesome for small monsters and pierce is god and bla bla bla. the last thing i've read is literally "the more arrows the more damage" (talking about spread vs rapid) so i thought that i've reached the ultimate spot of unknowing my own weapon. i've used spread a lot in 3u (peko's bow, for example) but really i want to know the numerical differences (i know about distances) like motion values and the powerful arrow (i mean, spread the most important arrow is the middle one , is it a rumour or is it real? and other bla bla bla about the shots) if you want and can repply it will be most appreciated. extra info: i have a really nice arsenal of rapid elemental bows that has lvl 4 charge with loadup and now that i've reached relic level using 408 raw + 400 elemental (awakened) rapid bow and since i have a random pieces of relic armor i've made a set with clandestine (less targeting + loadup + coating combination+ ) enlightened blade (awaken+element att up 10% + status att up +10%) critical eye +2 (originally +1 but had one slot left so why not) focus and use poison coat (no slots for paralysis so i went poison) the bow has sleep capabilities and powered up, with clandestine it's just 4 shots to sleep anything and inmediatelly later 16 or so to sleep them again. and now i wonder if it would have been better to find a spread bow.

I'm just going to address the elephant in the room, since I don't see it in the first major page of comments: You made this, specfically, a Non-Power Bow demo, and yet you never used the non-power bonus shot type. There were no arc shots to be had. I mean, sadly enough, I honestly feel like that makes sense and is probably what a bow user eschewing power shot on their current bow should be doing (which I why I tend to stick exclusively to power shot), but it just feels like a missing component to this video. If there were arc shots, I overlooked them, and definitely feel they didn't much impact the end result of the hunt.

@g1Chikumo

Calvin castellanos Sacred* While I may not be Gaijin, I'd say it's a really powerful bow as long as you have Free Element +10 and Focus active since it has some pretty good raw and is I think one of the few thunder element power shot bows (S.Nerscylla being the only other one after looking it up, and that too is awaken and has way fewer available coatings, most notably that it is unable to use power coatings). Add that it has built in Load Up so you can use those 225% raw damage shots and the ability to use nearly if not all coatings with it. And since it can use so many coatings, it brings the versatility of being used as a status bow if you cannot get the Free Element +10 (It's only rival in being able to use all coatings being the Seahorse harp... which says alot) It's not the end-all-be-all bow, but it's real darn good. (Biggest drawback it has in my opinion would be that it has no slots) Another very similar bow to it would be the Teostra's "Courageous Wish", same raw damage, power shot, has built in Load Up with the same shots at charge level 3 & 4 with no need to be awakened to gain the blast element in return for losing the coating versatility. So if you have and like the Courageous Wish, you'll probably like the Sacred Bow G, and vice versa.

I'm a little confused why you would bother doing a non-power bow demo, and not use or discuss arc shots? It's the same as doing the power bow demo and just not using the power shots. I was very used to the 3U bow controls, but I felt like the 4U ones were better "on paper" (while charging with R, it's easier to adjust the camera manually with your thumb and roll with B) so I opted to make the switch. Enjoying it so far, even if the "on/off" aiming mode feels a bit weird.

Not a frequent bow user but definitely love the new controls. Being someone who likes shooter games a lot (I play shooters with a controller yes I prefer controllers over the keyboard) I find the R button as the charge button quite comfortable. Usually I use the left stick movements for rough aiming and the C stick for vertical aiming. I often have the scope aiming...thing (X button) active so it's easier to (roughly) tell where the trajectory path will be. Accuracy...not exactly bad but it's much less painful than back in the clawing days on a PSP XD

When it comes to the bow, I tend to try to get away with Stamina Recovery Up in my armor sets, but wonder if that's such a good thing or not considering when I look at some other videos where some are stressing more DPS than support on their armor skills (see Challenger +2 for example).

Well I assume the new control style for bow is the hold R to shoot. So yes I use that for two reasons one the R button always felt like something that should affect stamina (e.g. Demon mode for DB) two holding R frees up my thumb to press different buttons (e.g. the roll button or virtual D pad). It may also help that that was the way I first played the bow.

New controls are objectively superior if you have a N3DS or circle pad pro because you can aim and move simultaneously, eliminating the need to briefly stand still and adjust your aim with the D pad. While I don't think it was a big deal in previous games because the areas you fought monsters in were flat, in MH4 it makes a huge difference because you have to frequently make small vertical adjustments. Took me some getting use to, but I recognized the benefits and now I really like it. You do have to tinker with a few settings to get it to feel good, though.

playing monster hunter since Monster Hunter Freedom, with the Bow being added in monster hunter freedom 2, and using the "claw" I honestly use the new controls and find them much better personally, especially on the New 3DS and the C Stick, don't know why but I always said I'd prefer the charge on R, and now it is.

If you have a friend to do this trick with, you can just create a decent number of dash juices and give them to him 5 at a time, then quit without saving. It's duping, yeah, but it's not too evil to duplicate dash juices.

Also I kinda *despise* Rapid Bows (almost as much as Pierce). I dunno, aiming with those feels kinda clunky to me. And I'm also an LBG user, so aiming your shots isn't really a new concept to me. But to me, it never felt RIGHT with Bows. I prefer Spread Bows soooooooo much. It's just... You can stand right next to a monster and just go nuts with your weapon. Kinda like using a Hammer (which is still my favourite weapon type so I guess that explains why I only really enjoy Spread Bows. Extremely similar gamefeel).

I use new controls cause they were clearly tailored to the N3DS. I also believe Stam Rec Up is better for bow than Focus if you don't have the extra Dash Juice. Also, I am a little annoyed that not one armor set has both skills like Narga Z from MH3U. I have not loved another armor set like I did that one...

Slade0117 still focus is almost an staple for dealing high dps... and dash juices (normal ones, not mega) aren't that hard to make, just need the wyporium, but in trade you need to know when to use it and when not
@CelticShaman.
@CelticShaman. 9 жыл бұрын
Not hard to make, no. But multiplying the mats is when I need to multiply 50 other things, 3 at a time. And as for me personally, Honey and Nitroshrooms trump everything else. 3rd slot depends on what I need. As for when to use it, for Power Shot its constantly. You can skate by with a regular bow and at least one of the skills I mentioned.
@drkaiser26
@drkaiser26 9 жыл бұрын
Slade0117 that's also my predicament as I use my kama sedition mostly, but what I do is to set the wyporium with catalysts mats (for the juices), then go with to expeditions with hammer or into charm tours or simply go do the mega potion quest while also looking for whenever the wyporium sets raw meats (then cooking them to rare with the street cook); grinding does slow you down yes, but sometimes you just have to stop and restock

I used Stamina Juice a lot in High-Rank and at the beginning of G-Rank simply because not having to think about Stamina is extremely convenient, but nowadays? Naaaaaaah, don't use them that much anymore. Farming the materials (especially rare steaks; I'm not a fan of boring meat farming runs) sucks, and it's not like charging your weapons / evading monster attacks is *that* much of a Stamina drain (and I'm using Hammer and Bow with Evade+2, so I do actually know what I'm talking about, I understand these weapons). Instead of farming for Dash Juices, I simply prefer Armor Sets with "Focus" so I charge my weapons faster. That basically solves all my Stamina problems.

I never got into bow in 3U. It bored me even more than both types of bowgun. I couldn't figure out how to use it to efficiently deal damage, and I carted a lot. Out of the 550+ hours I spent in 3U, approximately one was wasted, total, on the bow. And then the trailers for 4U made the bow seem fresh and fun! And, of the 250+ hours I've currently spent in 4U... about one hour was wasted before I gave up forever on the bow. It's not ever going to be as exciting to me as getting right up to the monster and whacking the hell out of them. I watched tutorials, including Gaijinhunter's... And I still couldn't figure the thing out, or why people would ever use it. In contrast, I have begun using the hunting horn after never once touching it in 3U, and have crafted the Gogmazios horn, and am actually seeing how it could be useful to a fight.

The 1.5 close range is unique to the Seregios bow as a trade off for not having a meaningful reload or sharpness and only starting with lvl2 charge. Other bows can get a coating boost which does boost potency, but it's not anywhere near the same multiplier.

Well, the bow is THE most friendly blademaster-to-gunner weapon - I don't know why you think it isn't. Barely any management (much like blademaster weapons), easy to use but hard to use properly (like blademaster weapons - gunner weapons are just hard to use in general), also, damage has nothing to do with it. When used correctly, LBG and HBG do more damage, but they're not as easy to use for a blademaster. Bow is the most blademaster-friendly gunner weapon there is by a mile.

NekoTheMHOtaku, well, when I had been playing MH3U for 200 hours without paying any attention to gunner weapons, I finally made an armor set and the g-rank Great Jaggi weapon for each class. The bow did NOTHING. I could not, for the life of me - even with the help of tutorials - figure out how it was supposed to be useful or exciting. Then I tried LBG and HBG, and I actually enjoyed those. I didn't play them much more (I mostly stayed with Blademaster), but LBG in MH4U is super fun for me. And the bow still sucks.

I think Monster Hunter killed my A button. While it still mostly works, it sometimes doesn't register. This is especially noticeable when I use charge blade, it doesn't always successfully use the sword mode charge attack when mid combo and most of the time I can't go from the shield thrust to axe burst/load combo with the X+A. Which stops me from loading the phials into the axe to get the buff. It's a conspiracy! Nintendo want me to buy into their iterative new 3DS! But I'll never buy one! Never!!!
