Exactly what I thought. I've loved Ogre Battle since my teens. Never have seen any other strategy RPG that similar (with the squads, elaborate class system, and deep fantasy world which like Star Wars felt like a chapter a few into a series with unreleased earlier chapters). The alignment system is missing but otherwise, really riffing on the OG OB. Unicorn Overlord is great. Really excited for the full game.

The more varied your units are inside a formation, the more OP they get. This will compound even more if they synergize with each other's skills and strengths. It is also good to make the same units in the formation sometimes. It depends on what you need that group for in that battle.

The Demo was impressive. The fact that they only count in combat time for the 5 hour timer meant, that i spent 7:30 Hours on the demo before hitting the end.

I'll add to the chorus of people saying that this is much more of a spiritual successor to the original Ogre Battle series, rather than Fire Emblem (and yes, there's a blue-haired protag in Ogre Battle too, lol) but only for the sake of making clear how beloved the Ogre Battle series is to some of us. And for good reason, if anyone hasn't played it and does have the chance to revisit at least OB64: Person of Lordly Caliber they really should, it is a strategy fan's dream and one of my favourite games of all time. Sadly, it still hasn't come to NSO, so the Wii U virtual shop is the only *legitimate* place I currently know of to find it, apart from an actual, physical N64 copy (and although I happen have it in both places, I realize this is no longer really feasible for most 😔)

You're slightly off about running iut of stamina. If out if stamina you cannot move, BUT you can still attack just fine, so if enemies run into you you can fight them normally. Its ONLY if you are in rest mode that your character will take no actions in combat.

A love letter to Fire Emblem? That isn't necessarily untrue but the actual gameplay and systems are a lot more or at least AS MUCH along the lines of Ogre Battle. So much to the point that a lot of the features in the game wouldn't exist if they were not iterating on things in direct response to Ogre Battle's mechanics. I personally see far more mechanical inspiration from those games than Fire Emblem.

Decent review and i'll definitely try out the formations thing (didn't even know you can change them before engaging enemies), but i rolled my eyes when you mentioned real time strategy. There is no real time strategy here, you spend most of the battle in pause mode, there is even a time limit you're even more discouraged from playing the game real time. It's simply not supposed to be played as an RTS, it's a turn based games with extra steps. Like i'm curious, have you never played an RTS before?

Every character has "preferred stats" that always level up and certain thresholds like level 5 or 10 gives a big bunch of stats across the board.

I can tell you've never played Ogre Battle if you're comparing this game to Fire Emblem so much. Unicorn Overlord is like 90% Ogre Battle, 9% original game, and 1% Fire Emblem.

It’s definitely a great JRPG, but I don’t think it’ll win GOTY. Only cause it’s rare for strategy games to get GOTYif it doesn’t have the AAA look and gameplay. That's interesting to know! I only thought of FE because of character archetype. Blue hair lord with a sword. Loyalty. Has a dead parent killed on screen early in the game. Old man on a sword that does a ton of damage but steals exp and would eventually fall off. Love interest with a lance. Travis looking similar to the GBA thief class. Story aspect, teenage boy that's a prince grabs random people to fight and reclaim the throne. He has a magic ring like Engage. But I hope the story takes a different turn.

At the start I thought they took references of fire emblem but after playing for a while I understood that they only used the casino emblem mechanic (random stat growth) too bad since it's one of the worst things fire emblem implemented, on the formation aspect it's actually very similar to Nippon Ichis's "Soul Cradle: world eaters" that game has a amazing formation based attack system, that unicorn overlord clearly was based on.
