I was surprised with the distance of the back strobes. Thought they would be just outside frame next to the red cushions of the net. Thanks for that side view.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I ran a similar setup minus the filter for a high school volleyball team last week. I always learn something from watching your videos to help level up my own work, let alone allowing me to do stuff nobody in my immediate area that nobody else is doing! As always I can't wait for the next one! Cheers!

I learn so much from your videos Matt! Thanks for taking the time to do this and answering my questions. Had two quick questions. 1) How do you decide when to use an umbrella vs a soft box? 2) Neat top on the rod angle for where the light needs to be. Any tips on the angle of a soft box or just need to take a pic to ensure the light is pointed at the right angle?
@MattHernandez
@MattHernandez 27 күн бұрын
If test it to see but you can usually tell from a side view. I don’t use soft boxes because they don’t get a big of a spread.

Great content as always - love the rod tip! Did I hear you say you're focusing on the back row? I always focus on the front center of groups because focus typically falls backwards...just curious. And did you share the filter link?
@MattHernandez
@MattHernandez 13 күн бұрын
Yeah I guess I did say it backwards. There’s about 1/3 in the acceptable focus area in front of and 2/3 behind your focal point. So I guess really either would be fine with a group photo like this. @@the-secrettutorials So I didn't have two large umbrellas but because I only had 12 girls (6 wide in two rows) I managed with my long strip box turned horizontal and used my other 2 lights for rim lights with focus reflectors. I probably could have done better but I think Matt's guidance was helpful in giving me a vision to shoot for and I liked the rim lights a lot. I think I needed to raise the power of one of them or at least turn it differently. But we were in a mad rush toward the end as open gym started 30 minutes before they told us it would so my 600 watt light ended up being a rim light when it should have been the main light but I had no time between individuals and the team photo so I just turned the strip box and shot my 300w light at full power and it was ok.

@@MattHernandez That is true my friend. For the past 3 years I’ve photographed an indoor karate Dojo team using his 2 34” reflective umbrellas. But I did temporarily consider switching to my 2 43” shoot through umbrellas. Maybe I should go with my 2 43” reflective umbrellas. I know how to place them eliminating shadows. I’ll do it your way, because it works, ……… and you’re a Pittsburgh Steelers fan🕺🏻

Hi Matt, great video as always. Does the mist filter have any effect on the rim light? Was there any issue cutting out the players without a hair light? Some of the top of some players’ heads seemed to fade into the background.
@MattHernandez
@MattHernandez 13 күн бұрын
It makes any light a little more bright and glow. But it depends on how strong it is. I had someone else cut them out so h don’t really know haha. But if the color is similar between the hair and background it’s usually a little harder.

Hey Matt! There's some good info here. Just curious, you mentioned you shot at 24 with a 24-70 lens. Do you get wide-angle distortion, and how do you handle it?

A little but that’s expected. I just leave room on the edges so the subject near the edge aren’t distorted too much.
