Thank you for explaining the difference between active and passive MHL cables. I have a Samsung galaxy A71 which has the MHL capability but after trying so many HDMI to USBC cables I have been unsuccessful to connect my phone to my smart tv. Hey Jeremy, i bought one similar to the black one, i plugged it into a power source and into my Note 3. i know you said i need a 5 pin to 11 pin converter, but the head fit perfectly into my phone which even started charging, but it didnt work. ali fares Of course it'll fit. It's all micro-USB but as stated in the (both) videos, Samsung uses an 11-pin setup. Get the adapter.

I think this might be the best MHL video on KZbin. In the case of the MHL equipped TV, it appears you're using a 5 pin to 11 pin conversion adapter. I beleve an 11 pin passive MHL cable was also made available?

hi there thanks for the video. but i have a question. I damaged my phone to the point where my lcd does not work (note 3). so i cant see anything on my phone but i know it is functional cause i still hear things when i press on the damaged screen or when i adjust the volume etc. i cant do screen mirroring because obviously i cant navigate anything on my phone. my question is if i get this adapter will it automatically show up on TV or will i have to still choose options that require me to navigate through my phone? which i am unable to because again its broke i cant see anything on my phone. Any MHL cable should support it. e.g. www.walmart.com/c/kp/mhl-cables The direct HDMI-MHL cable requires the display to support MHL. A standard MHL adapter will work with any HDMI display.

Very helpful video showing how things work. Thanks. By the way the number of pins in microUSB port depends... so some Samsung devices also use 5 pin and this even depends on region. I.e. Samsung SM-T311 devices for GB uses 11-pins ports and for the rest of the world use 5 pins.

I have an MHL v1.0 to single-channel DVI-D adapter from Delock and I'm using it with my MHL v1.0-only HTC One (M7). All this is giving me at the computer monitor end is 640x480 @60Hz. :( Don't even know where to start looking for any possible fix so I get at least 720@60, which MHL v1.0 should be perfectly capable of.

+Jeremy Phan I've since tried it with an additional DVI-to-HDMI adapter and plugged it into an HDTV and that gave me 1080p@25Hz output, so now I know both the phone and the MHL adapter are probably capable of doing everything the MHL v1.0 spec says they should. So now the problem is isolated to 1080p computer monitors. Specifically I think it's an issue with what video modes the monitors are reporting as supported when they send their EDID info blocks at the start. Though my monitor does report 720p@60 as being supported, I suspect it still doesn't matter if that's not the first mode on the list of standard modes in the EDID block, so one experiment would be to reflash my EDID and see what happens. The trouble with that is it's write-protected and I don't know how to disable the protection without taking the monitor apart. Another thing that seems to have worked for some people was forcing their phone to output 720p@60 (mode 4) by overwriting /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb1/video_mode on their phone with a value of 4 after they connected their adapters (command line for that would be "echo 4 > /sys/devices/virtual/graphics/fb1/video_mode" and you'd have to run it as root). Didn't do anything for me. Yet another thing that worked for some people was reconverting the digital signal from the MHL adapter to VGA and plugging it into the monitor's VGA input. This one I have yet to try. Ordering a DVI-to-VGA converter now. But if this doesn't work I think might actually have to start taking my monitor apart because I find this incompatibility unacceptable. :)

ok, I got a Rankie for MHL to HDMI adapter cable set for my Samsung Galaxy S5 Active. I noticed that you use a small adapter between the Rankie and phone. The Rankie I thought was an 11 pin. Is that not correct? Right now when I attempt to hook everything up nothing happens. Yours is the only site that states the small adapter is needed. All other sites state you just plug in and done. I cannot find the small adapter nor anything on the package that states the usb/Mhl is a 5 pin. Help. I really don't want to spend more money on another cable set if it will not work.

Ok, so I've got a note 10+ and a note 8 spare , both with their factory included OTG adapter. I've got a pioneer avh-2330nex head unit in my truck. It doesnt support the mirrorlink in my phone or miracast or any of that. So it says. It also doesn't support android auto wireless. Question is , how do I mirror my phone to my pioneer, is there any way to take the required wired usb connection for android auto and make it wireless with some sort of wireless dongle? And would either or both jeopardize sound quality. Right now just running basic android auto wired with the music on my phone is basically flawless. Going just straight bluetooth even is impeccable, although I feel it is slightly lower quality than running through AA. So just curious what my options are. Surely theres a way to pull all this off. I'm just not as sharp in these areas as I'd like to be. If u got any tips I'd appreciate it

Lot of people get confused. Ok so back of your tv..if it has logos for MHL , all you need to do is plug your small "charger/micro " end to your phone anx the other end,should be HDMI ,plug straight up and ready. If you don't have a cord with you're phone connector on one side and HDMI on the other... Walmart and best buy sells them . Which is almost the same except it has the little box that contains the tech that your tv doesn't...BUTTTT If your phone doesn't have the MHL compatible technology ,then neither of those will work. Website MeetMHL will have a list of phones that carry it. You can check that or Google your phone info. If it has it then you're good.Just find out which ports your tv has.

Hi, I have a question for the wire version. Can you turn off your phone and still able to cast it to the TV? I'm curious because I don't want my phone to overheat (emulation and having the screen on at the same time). Cheers

no, once you turn off ur phone, the tv will also
