Oh I need more jobs like this coming in to the workshop that are *fixable*. Nice to see the good tools being put to use as well. USB-C meter doing well ( new version of software lets you increase the cut-off threshold so that it won't run off the page when you have low current/volts ). Also good to see the Chipmunk helping out.

It's liquid damage causing a short in the keyboard. Some laptops can exhibit some very funky behaviour with keyboard shorts, including POSTing, but not loading the OS. Keyboards with an integrated power button, like this one, are even more likely to cause issues like no POST.

My much smaller country has multiple local retailers with websites where one can find laptop replacement parts, so I'm not sure how the UK doesn't, that you would be looking at ebay every time. I was able to find all the parts for a 10 year old Lenovo that needed a new keyboard and fan on one of those. Of course neither they nor anyone else sells screws (many of which were wrong or missing), and the only place I found those in quantities of less than 5000 per screw model was on Temu.

The reason the keyboard was probably causing issues is because the power button is intergrated into it and was probably stuck in the pressed position with would be like holding the power button down after turning it on which would turn it off. it probably could have been fixed by removing the power key and cleaning between the membrain.
@benqu885 ай бұрын
Good and likely true explanation.
@man_eating_monkey5 ай бұрын
It's _possible_ that if the power button was abused, the key hinge or cup could be damaged, but in my experience, if a key is stuck active, it's more likely than not corrosion in the membrane layer.

As someone else mentioned, I believe it was a defective power button on the keyboard. Maybe liquid damage? It was probably impossible (or very hard) to fix, but it could be confirmed with continuity mode. I've seen people fix these buttons by placing isopropyl under it. Still, not a fix that I'd do for a customer.

It depends on the platform. It's powering a 3.3v circuit via a diode, and if the PCH interprets the voltage as FALSE then it reset the BIOS. So it's going to depend on where the VOLTAGE LOW threshold is for a given PCH. I'm not sure about the answer to that, but I've seen batts at less than 3.0v (which will be closer to 2.8 after the diode) causing BIOS resets or in the case of Dell, no power, so I err on the side of caution.

Pretty sure it's not the entire keyboard that was bad it's just a power button stuck. So when you plugged it in it would turn it on but the power button being pushed down and stuck down would turn it off.
