It all sounds a little far fetched. It would be easier to be elected president of the US for someone who had zero history to be asked to be on the ARMY COUNCIL (of any of the breakaway movements ). McKevitt didn't live that long or rose up to army council by trusting the first bagman who came along. In fact !!! If I was him, I'd decline , and say "why the fuck would you ask me ?" . Because if he said yes, he'd likely have been shot. Because the normal reaction should be " whoaaa ? You're asking me to help with the leadership of the legitimate underground government of Ireland since 1918 ?. You think I'm a padraig Pearce or Thomas macdonagh or seamas twomey ? I think you're testing me here " . With an answer like that he might live ( if that question was ever even asked. His wife said he'd do anything for money and his story sounds like a cheap paperback ) Think of it.

They're concerned with monitoring the IRA and security threat from Irish republicans. The threat of Irish republican terrorism will never go away while Northern Ireland remains part of UK. MI5 and MI6 are intelligence services and wherever there's an ongoing or possible future threat, they have field operatives and intelligence gathering in place. The job of intelligence agencies is not to get an outcome, but to gather intelligence. It doesn't stop because conflict ends. Having intelligence tenticles all over the risk spots to your country and overseas territories is the best defense a country can have.

I've never understood why PIRA (and OIRA in Dublin) celebrated the GFA as a 'Victory'. The GFA cemented the status-quo. Presumably PIRA/INLA & UVF/UDA etc were so riddled with 'touts' that it was virtually impossible to carry out any significant operations ('The Dirty War' ). This Ruper fella is a prime example (both within PIRA & RIRA). MI5 always want 'skin in the game' so they must have people inside CIRA nowadays plus any breakaway Loyalist groups. What was all the bloodshed & terrible suffering on both sides all about then?

The priority for the Irish community by the late 80s became a lasting ceasefire, one man one vote, the pull out of the British troops, cowing the loyalist paramilitaries, and participation of Republicans in a more powerful local parliament. There were people born in the their 30s in 1998 who knew nothing but violence their whole lives and were deeply suspicious of half of the population. They didn't want to live in fear anymore and were willing to make sacrifices they weren't willing to make in 1972. The political struggle also became more important than the military struggle throughout the 80s as Sinn Féin surged in popularity post-hunger strikes and as the IRA's military successes waned in Belfast, combined with the increase in tit for tat killings between PIRA, INLA, OIRA, and IPLO. The success of the IRA came from its community support but as that disappeared after the Eniskillen bombing, even they had to admit that the jig was up and accept terms they wouldn't have in 1969-82. Unfortunately the British changed a lot of the terms they'd agreed to in 1994, 1995, and 1998 last minute and then didn't even adhere to those in the years after resulting in another agreement in 2007 and then reneged on those too. But you can see where the war-weary people were coming from.

I have a hard time to view him as hero when he gave the money and bomb parts to them to kill innocent people. Yeah, “he’s a snitch for the greater good” but I have a hard time to believe that people can easily raise in ranks without getting their hands dirty. There NOT Americans, The Irish could not beat the Brits,so some of them went'accross the pond' joined the US Army and beat the crap out of The Real Americans instead. They tried it on the Canadians too. Bad Idea, did'nt work, Canadians are nice people but don't mess with them, you'll most likely get hurt.

If you can't get dual citizenship in Ireland then you have no biz claiming irish heritage. I'm American first, but definitely have irish roots as my grandpa was fresh off the boat irish. My great grandpa was actually IRA. It annoys me that we have people with 5% Irish ancestry who only acknowledge the country on st patty's day. Most of them have never even heard of The Troubles, or Bobby Sands. When they hear "IRA" they think of an investing bank account. It's embarrassing

Why were the IRA indiscriminately binning and killing their own people along with Brits? So so so unnecessary. Did it really help, killing a mother and her unborn twins for instance? They may have been sincere, they were sincerely murdered. This guy talking seems so uninterested, unable to really be clear. “Really exciting” he says in the most laid back voice.

Yeah but what about Scappaticci? My personal feeling is the war ended with the Good Friday Agreement as my support, and many of my family who were released due to that agreement, was for PIRA and not any of these splinter groups. But to think Scapp wasn't a spy for the Brits is just fantasy, and it's obvious he wasn't the only one. Unfortunately the whole movement was riddled with touts. But the war is over so maybe just let sleeping dogs lie?
