Mia will forever be my favorite badminton player. Her elegance when she glides on court, finesse in her play making, and her choice to sacrifice power for placement is something I still haven't seen in any of the new crop of shuttlers.

I was too young but cannot forget the way Mia bends her back like a divine yogi in Atlanta 96. This is imo one of her greatest skill. Always got goosebumps when reading her story. This is no different, thx for putting everything beautifully into context.

Strong and important message to PBSI, It sucks that i paid vision+ sports tv just to watch all the badminton series, but as long as i follow the more disappointments that i got, so i unfollow all the badminton official/page in instagram and cancel the subscription it just sucks to see Indonesia’s Badminton is worsening.

I still vividly remember her olympics final in 2004. She didn't go all the way, but her way of hitting the shuttle mesmerised me (if only I had half of her wrist power). It's crazy thinking that she's only 25 then, after all the years she had been playing (and winning!) internationally.

Great video! I was happy that such a legend moved to The Netherlands (as I'm Dutch). Even better that she won silver at the Olympic Games in Athens! Her around the head shot where she almost breaks her back is chef's kiss! That move was such a trademark of hers and I really wanted to emulate that on court haha. After she stopped playing, it's like she vanished into thin air. I wonder what she's doing right now and hope she enjoys a well deserved live after badminton

Late 80s to mid 90s Indonesia had fantastic women's team. They still have talent but not quite the same level. Why? That's not an answer I can give in a comment...maybe a video one day?...

Basically lack of coaching by the federation. Few factors I can draw as an Indonesian. - At the end of 1990's we fell into Monetary & Political crisis, so sport governing body such as PBSI(Indonesian Badminton Federation) was kinda neglected and become an organization that use for political gain. It's a state of crisis, sport wasn't a priority for people. - In early 2000s when Indonesia bounce back from the crisis, there's a booming trend of Talent Contest TV Show (adopted American Idol etc) seems like lots of parents back then see less appealed to push their kids into sports like what Mia Audina's father did. Indonesian was sucked into the instant fame game (lots of talent show back then; singing, acting, comedy, but sports) - Presumably there was a little 'trauma' on the women's side of coaching within PBSI, when Mia Audina's move to Netherlands. They haven't found a new raw talent like her and kinda lost the cycle of regeneration. - Badminton Clubs also took a while to recover from the crisis. In 2000-teen big club like Djarum start to have their national-circuit to catch talents but yea probably only could produce more consistent regeneration on men's side of the sport (with occasionally strong mix-double pairs). Yea that's more or less. We got last Olympic gold on Women's Double though.

I think age should not be a main determinant of how a player is a prodigy, mediocre or simply ordinary. Look at Chinese player Zhang Ning, she was 30 plus years old when she won her 2nd Olympic Gold Medal, , , , Intanon won her WC at such a young age, however, she could not even compete for the number1 spot, TTY is lireallycthe longest running world 1 player up to date, yet she didnt actually perform really well in her younger years [age 15-20]. Same can be said with Carolina Marin who has the most WC titles. While its true that Mia had achieved a lot at such a premature age, she is far from being a legend like Zhang Ning or TTY...

I agree with you though that just because someone achieves so much young doesn't mean they'll achieve even more when they are older. And likewise, just because a player doesn't achieve much before a certain age doesn't mean they'll never be good
