Axselson will never be Goat. why? he was never the best in his own era. simple as that. most of his achievements are benefits from the absent of greater player. such as Olympic 2016 bronze, 2017 WC gold, 2020 Olympic gold. during this time, i mean clearly momota>Axelson not just from h2h 14-1, also from dominant form where momota win 11 titles, while axelson's dominant was no where near, even in the absence of better player momota and few other top player. achievements wise, sure axelson is next to lin dan, but competing for Goat are lin dan, lcw, momota. why? they destroy anyone include second or 3 seed like play vs highschool kids. so offen score are single digits. Axelson is great, but he is in same braket as chen long, taufik,

Umpires already had the ability to call a fault under the old rules, the new amendment specifies the service as an attempt to cut out excessive (long) side to side movements of the racket and shuttle before the initial back movement of the racket in service action. It also seeks to put a stop to excessive use of the hand raised to stop a service by the receiver in overt gamesmanship to put off opponents. Both are subjective obviously but the previous law was clear 9.1.1. Neither side shall cause undue delay to the delivery of the service.

Speaking of the men’s dominance part, I really do miss monster players / pairs who just bulldoze their way through these tournaments. I don’t know what it is but there’s just something so captivating about seeing making the entire competition their own - like Momota or Viktor and how crazy the Minions were just a few years ago. I hope we get to see this again sometime soon!

Hi Ben last point about service rule change is that the undue delay with side to side movement has been called before as a fault with the top Indian MD pair and with some Singles players just taking too long. Recently more disturbing was the failure of a fault call in a match with Christo Popov against a Chinese opponent which was clearly two racket moves not side to side. (I'm a qualified umpire BUAoE)
@BenBeckmanBadminton3 күн бұрын
This is what I thought, that umpires could already fault if a player took too long to serve or receive. Is this new rule a way of making it more known?

@@BenBeckmanBadminton This might be controversial, but I do think the Japanese overshot their expectation when they paired Yuta with Maya. Other than WJC and an IC title, in WD no less, Maya doesn't have much achievement under her belt. Yet, they placed their priority and spotlight on her. She is the only Japanese that I know of receiving backing and donation from companies and media coverage without actually being in the National Team. Japan has long history of idol culture, and those with good looks will receive country wide media attention. Nozomi Okuhara herself had stated in an interview that in Japan, they care less about how you play, it's all about their appearances. This is likely why Maya was chosen. That's not to say Maya isn't talented, but there are better candidates such as Aya Tamaki who is now two times WJC champion, yet she received little media coverage, and isn't given any preferential treatment like Maya does.
@BenBeckmanBadminton3 күн бұрын
@reinartes7079 maybe they did but I wouldn't go as far as to say she's overrated or not a talent. Maybe it was a slight oversight for her to be partnered with Yuta but I'm pretty sure I remember that Yuta agreed to this choice in the first place, not sure he'd do that without reason. Regardless, we'll have to see how this situation progresses. Would be a shame to see Yuta Watanabe misused
@reinartes70793 күн бұрын
@BenBeckmanBadminton I didn't mention anything about Maya being a non talent. That's honestly too early to tell at this stage. I just want to let you know that the decision to pair Yuta with Maya isn't entirely based on potential nor talent. I just think the expectation people have on her is unrealistic given her lack of achievement and experience.
@BenBeckmanBadminton3 күн бұрын
@reinartes7079 I was more reference the original commentator where he said she was most overrated player. I agree, the expectation on her is rather crazy. The jump from junior to senior is tough at the best of times but from girls doubles to senior mixed doubles combined with being paired with your countries most successful doubles player. That's tough.

The thing that is absolute must if you want to defeat China is to win MD's match, among the 4 MD's is China's weakest discipline..The order of MD's is also gonna be very important The 2 teams that can defeat China are S.Korea(they need to take XD seriously) and Malaysia...They both basicallaly need to win 3/4 because S.Korea MS and Malaysia WS have zero chances to win against Chinese

Think he said he wouldn't pursue the partnership with Taguchi if they didn't make it into the final of All Japan. I also heard Kang Kyung Jin is returning to Korea from China. Interesting situation with BKA given the current president of BKA who has been asked to step down is refusing to do so. Hopefully more stability in their organization for 2025.

You mentioned the thai pairing of Puvaranukroh and Paewsampran, but not the other half of that story.... Taerattanchai and Jomkoh. Do you think they will stay as a pairing for this coming year, or will the original pairs be put back together? Is it your opinion that Dechapol and Supissara have been put together with the future in mind, as Sapsiree might be retiring within the next year or so?
@BenBeckmanBadminton3 күн бұрын
The reason I didn't talk about them is because a/ they didn't do as well, not really much of a break through and b/ someone from Thailand told me Sapsiree is slowly moving into the media world (she's been doing that a while I know but it's ramping up) So in answer to your last question, I'm not so sure they will be reuniting

Although a good player I think Farhan will struggle to reach the very highest echelon of men's singles, something I would be very surprised if Hu didn't reach. I think Thai women's singles player Opatniput is an unbelievable talent and while still young, she can absolutely have a breakthrough year in 2025. The new serv rule is a long time coming and will be great for the game. There are a lot of shenanigans surrounding the serve in badminton that are not present in other racket sports to the same extent. The subjectivity in enforcement shouldn't be a problem IF there is adequate oversight from the bwf holding umpires accountable. There are many sports were officiating is largley based on subjectivity. Ice hockey doesn't even have uniform rules or playing surface worldwide. Something I am very curious about is how things will evolve with south korean badminton. Will they be able to self-regulate, what will this do to the social atmosphere in the national team, will this impact performance?
@BenBeckmanBadminton3 күн бұрын
I have faith Alwi can become something. The appointment of Mulyo might help him actually. We'll see. For Opatnitput, I agree she's a talent, has suffered some injury issues and I'm worried with her build she lacks power and strength, not just to play but to stay injury free. Yeah we'll have to see about the serving rule, I just know it'll cause some havoc throughout this year. Yes, I actually wanted to add that into the section about Korean mixed, in fact about Korea in general I have so many questions and the one you raise is at the top of that list

I want to preface this by saying I am a big Watanabe fan. I think that Watanabe/Taguchi pairing had a rough start but showed promise. It was clear to me that Taguchi is levels below world class but she has shown the ability to improve and grow. I genuinely (unbiased opinion) believe that they can qualify for the WTF next year (2026). The question is, however, does this pairing past that long? With someone like Yuta Watanabe, do you put him in a pairing for the sake of development for 2+ years? He is genuinely one of the best and easily one of the most talented players in the world and imo the best male player in Japan. I am perfectly willing to have this discussion/argument with someone but my opinion won't change so it won't be a productive one. Especially when you have team competitions and a player who is as famous and extraordinary as he is, you (and he but I doubt he will say anything because of the culture) want him to be with the best people you can give him.

The recent amendment to the service law is, in my opinion, profoundly unhelpful, as all subjective "judgement" tends to be. There are almost certain to be howls of complaint over unequal application of this law as it lacks the absolute metric of, for example, having a foot in contact with a court line. I feel that badminton needs to be careful not to become bogged down in excessive laws to control every possible eventuality as this can rapidly descent into a situation where the laws start to dominate and ruin the game rather than serving as a framework by which it is played.
@BenBeckmanBadminton3 күн бұрын
Yeah I completely agree, the subjectiveness of this new rule opens it up to differing interpretations and implementations. I do feel this "rule" isn't needed as the umpire has the power to call a player up for undue delay in the service situation already although none never do.
