Side note - I have so many memories of nurses being some of the kindest souls in the world. They've taken care of me when sick, comforted me when I was scared, even helped our family through our grandpa's passing - so please please please... this video is not about nurses. This video is about ONE nurse that should NOT be a nurse and hospital staff that honestly didn't seem to care about what happened to Mia. My sister works in healthcare and understands mistakes can happen but the utter lack of empathy was so so scary to see. I still can't believe this happened and this has been a huge wake up call to our family that no matter where we are we have to be hyper vigilant in making sure that our loved ones are okay. I'm sorry for the rant I'm still so emotional.

I would think most mothers don't curl up into a ball of emotions when it comes to the safety of their child. I know i've gone from dumbass to doctor multiple times whenever my daughter has fallen, bumped her head, almost choked on a random small thing, etc, remembering everything i've ever read about signs and symptoms, checking her pupil dilation, reflexes, etc. And in terms of advocating against healthcare workers for the safety of your child, one time i wasn't paying attention, and a doctor did something inappropriate, from that moment on i'm hawk-eyes, asking what they're doing before they dare do anything, i just don't trust these people anymore, i've studied enough at this point that i could be at least half way through a medical degree, and many general practitioner doctors have assumed that i was pre-med. It's really not as difficult as it seems, you just have to care about something enough to memorise all that stuff, and i care about my daughter more than anything.

As someone who suffered from malpractice as a young kid, please seek further tests to see if there's any long term damage. Please also contact lawyers because this is pure negligence and you never know how much it'll affect your child down the line. I suffered physically for many years after my incident, but the biggest thing was suffering mentally from the aftermath of the incident. Mia is very young so I doubt it'll carry on in her life, but my parents still till this day regret not taking legal action at that time.
@asteriamabel27682 жыл бұрын
True, and if ever they didn't take any action, think about how many patients in the past have the same experience of malpractice and negligence or even even for the future patients that'll be put to risk just because of this one nurse! Imagine the possibility of others in the past, totally clueless about what really happened and lost a loved one just because of this "small" negligence? The thought of that one nurse saying "It's out of our control" when they could've prevented it in the first place, infuriates me. My sister would've suffered life long consequences if my mother wasn't very vocal in the hospital when she gave birth to her because the hospital she got admitted at have a tendecy to ignore you if your not vocal enough. This why I'm very emotional about this too. I'm very sorry about what happened to you because you don't deserve it... I hope the one that did this to you recieved karma 10000x more and get what they deserve.
@lindada1111 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I can't confirm if i was neglected because i can't prove well. Sometimes they put the fault on understaffing but it won't change the fact that they didn't care well. If it would really been so "dramatically" understaffed the patient needs to be submitted to a different hospital.
@Lillywishingwell2 жыл бұрын
I’d double check with the pediatrician if there are no tests they can do to see if Mia has brains damage. The hospital might be saying they can’t because they don’t want to give you proof. I’d also ask for all the ventilation machine records. If they won’t give them to you, i’d get legal involved.

My mom had a ruptured aneurysm and during her stay, they told me they need to place a chest tube for her pneumothorax, and I was like … “ why ? She didn’t get hit by a car or went thru any physical trauma to cause a pneumothorax !!!”…. The nurse was shocked when I asked and sent a head nurse in to talk to me. My sister kept notifying her cancer doctor but all he said was have her “drink more water” and “calm down”. The nurse caught it and she was admitted to the ICU that same day. She experiencing heart failure from the chemo meds and it’s been going on for weeks. Long story short, the hospital head doctor came in and apologized and stated he will be her primary cancer doctor from then on and watch her closely. But it turned out the intubated him completely unnecessarily. And then once they tried to remove it, he’d been on it long enough to become weak and they couldn’t get him off completely. And then they suffocated him essentially, while changing him because the placed him face down too long. And he coded they brought him back. And he was working his way to becoming free from the intubation but then the exact same situation happened but we weren’t there and he passed sway. And we know it was the due to the mistreatment during his nightly sheet change bc it was at the exact same time, and the same situation where he wasn’t getting oxygen being gave down while they change the sheets too long. The emergency room Dr said she heard he’d been w/out oxygen for over 20 min and so his heart stopped. He was otherwise super healthy until all this. And they listed cause of death as Covid. But that’s not the actual reason.

My brother needed a specific valve for surgery. Hospital said they didn't have it but they could order it and bring him into surgery with plenty of time to spare. He was supposed to be fine. Hours and hours of "We'll update you when there's an update to give you" his mentor came back, (brother and mentor worked at that hospital) expecting to find him in recovery. Raised hell when he found out they never started the surgery. The person who requested the valve made a mistake and the person who was supposed to process it didn't say anything and just let the incorrect request sit on the desk. No one followed up until he was already brain dead. It caused quite the raucous because he was so well known and loved throughout the hospital and if they let just a person die because of negligence what's happening to patients who aren't as beloved by the staff. I get that being overworked leads to not the best choices but we kept asking "How's the surgery?" "Is the surgery going well?" and no one mentioned 8 hours in that the surgery hadn't begun.

The fact that you didn’t get an apology, means that on a very calculated professional level, they can very much be faced with a malpractice lawsuit, is the very reason she’s not getting any answers or “closure”. If they actually the actual words that they’re “sorry”, it immediately implies they did something very wrong, and that the apology, in the court of law, they would have acknowledged that they are, in fact, very much in the wrong, and would immediately lose a malpractice lawsuit. Stay being mama bear and folllow those instincts and knowledge that you do have in the medical industry, no matter how uncomfortable it makes anyone in the moment. Accidents happen, but the brushing off and lack of accountability made them rightfully livid. I’m a respiratory therapist at a children’s hospital and I can sadly confirm that COVID-RSV have hit our babies badly 🥺 last year we were hit so hard with Omicron that we were seeing a COVID-RSV combo. When we had lost our first baby to COVID-RSV, it took a major toll on us bc we knew how to treat COVID, we knew how to treat RSV but together we were at a lost bc something called PARDS kicked in. It’s extremely easy for a baby to self-extubate bc a baby’s airway is smaller/shorter, the tube doesn’t go as deep as an adult. Self-extubation can cause a baby to code. If proper CPR and bagging were performed, we don’t typically see a neuro deficit. I’m so sorry you guys had to experience this.. I wish I could explain more as a peds/NICU/cardiac respiratory therapist. We don’t want to sedate and especially paralyze our kids/babies unless we really have to. Under-sedation is also one of the leading causes of self-extubation… I hope you guys never have to go through any of this again 😔 Always speak up about your baby bc you’re another pair of eyes that might be seeing something we’re not!

I’m so sorry your family had to go through this. I am a pediatric RN who takes care of children on ventilators every day. The first situation sounds like she self extubated during care. This can happen from moving her around and sometimes the tube barely moves and it causes a waterfall of problems. The slightest movement either too fast or incorrectly can extubate. Or if she does cough it can come out. The second situation is completely negligent. The vent alarms are there for a reason. ICU/ventilator trained nurses learn the first step is to check patient and tubing. It sounds like she claimed the problem was a mucus plug which is not true unless the vent line goes flat while connected. You can absolutely print data from the vent as well. Filing a report was the right thing to do. I’d save everything from the hospital and get copies of everything in case you need to take it further.

My husband and I are nurses. We both work in the adult critical care division and my husband is an ICU RN. With his experience, he says it’s carelessness that the second code happened. Also the fact that the nurse didn’t admit to her mistake is dangerous. Never be afraid to fire a nurse, you can ask not to have a nurse back and they *should* be able to respect those wishes. The person you also need to talk to if no one listens is the patient advocate or keep going up the chain. Someone will listen and if not, it was a good call to report them to JCAHO. I’m a respiratory therapist, they definitely messed up here and they should be held accountable for their mistake. Just so that everyone can have better understanding of what happened. In the first situation, she most likely self extubated herself ( coughed out the tube) because unlike tubes in adults , kids tubes dont have ballons at the tip to help hold them in place. Since kids’ air ways are smaller , they don’t have balloons which means that they can come out easily. And it’s not like u can just reinsert the tube back in because 1)the doctor has to approve and be present 2)it’s so hard and there is a high risk of infection so the only option here is cpr. In the second situation, how come they just silenced the alarm🤦🏻♀️ yes it’s expected for the patient to breathe rapidly ( become tachypneic) during suctioning which causes the alarm to go off and it goes back to normal once we are done . However u shouldn’t just silence the alarm specially just for a critical patient that’s just pure carelessness 🤦🏻♀️

But we don't know they just silenced the alarm. We only know what the parents witnessed. Neonatal intensive care nurses are not usually negligent and there were two nurses present. You're not going to be negligent with a co-worker right there.

I can kinda understand silencing the alarm if she genuinely thought the baby was tachypneic, but Cindy literally told her that the ventilator was saying to check the tubing and the nurse brushed her off. That to me is just absurd

Health care gaslighting is such a horrible thing to experience, because most people just don't have a medical/health care background or have never really been taught how to advocate for themselves or others, or don't have a personality that makes it easier to do so. It's infuriating. My mum went through this with allergists until one doctor finally asked the right questions and could help her. She knew something wasn't right but doctors kept telling her she's just imagining it and she's convinced her body to react because of it. Turns out it was actually the glue of the new carpets vaping out causing an allergic reaction.

As a health care professional, I am always the first one to defend my own. However, I can tell you 100% we are all trained to be honest and take responsibility for our mistakes. I am really horrified for you. You have every right to be infuriated. I’m so sorry that they didn’t care properly for your family. Also, good for you for filling with the joint commission. That’s really the only way to force the hospital’s hand. It’s all about “politics”. I know that in my discipline, we can be reported to our board and it can lead to certification loss or suspension. My professor was in the hospital a few months ago, and the nurses there treated her horribly, despite knowing she was a fellow healthcare professional. (I do understand that nurses are understaffed and constantly training new people, but that’s not an excuse for nearly killing people, or treating people like a boring task). It’s just ridiculous. Whatever happened to treat people how you want to be treated. Our professor just started an initiative yesterday to train us to be more kind and more proactive. After that she’s going to spread it to other programs. I hope that other families will have a better experience going forward.
@MorganaR91352 жыл бұрын
And just a side note, hospital administrators SHUDDER at the words joint commission, so at least you may be making them piss themselves. I can guarantee you that they will be HEAVILY scrutinized for the next 5ish years.

After having a few medical issues throughout the years, I feel like self advocacy from patients and family should be talked about more and normalized! Omg! this is so true...5 years ago I was having severe cramps in my lower abdomen & couldn't even Walk properly & since I was also on my period at the same I just thought I was having bad period pain, except the pain kept getting severe by the minute, I finally went to ER & told them what was happening only to dismissed for just having period pain, I told them repeatedly & relentlessly that I know my own body & this was something else & begged them to atleast run some test but they dismissed me....they sent me home with some pain killers & told me to drink more water 🙄... Two days later i collapsed in my room from severe fever, the ambulance was called & when they finally did the testing they found out I was suffering from appendicitis & it had already raptured & was causing massive sepsis to my organs...i stayed in the hospital for one month because I was under heavy antibiotic regiment to clear out the massive infection that I had contracted....it honestly gave me PTSD ( diagnosised)...all that could have been avoided if they just took my pain seriously..SMH.. PS: sorry for bad grammar English is not my native language..

@@leylamohamed7950 No worries! I understood everything perfectly! A lot of doctors tend to not take your pain seriously, especially if you are a woman. I had neurosurgery and a small portion of my skull was removed but afterwards, I was in excruciating pain but they just gave me more Tylenol🙃 I was in so much pain all I wanted to do was cry but I knew if I cried, my pain would get worse. I also think I was discharged too early because after anesthesia, hospitals normally won’t discharge you until you have a bowel movement or at least pas gas but I was discharged anyways even though I didn’t. With the cost of American healthcare, maybe it was better because my short hospital stay was already so expensive 😩

Did they ever mention which hospital this was? This case was unavailable, how Cindy said; accidents happen. However, even if these incidents were completely accidents, the way this staff seemed so careless about almost losing a life and the way they handled accountability.. completely inappropriate and immoral
@chicogee42662 жыл бұрын
@@Gigimz the right thing is for the hospital has to do an investigation. Usually that’s the case when there is a complaint and even if the staff and hospital cover themselves up at least there is a report. Might be different in Georgia than Ca idk. Also the right thing to do was also not let the nurse keep treating her daughter after the incident. I don’t think Stephanie gave the information out of the hospital. I just know you can try and do more if they want to. The video will have impact but they should have given the name of the hospital the supervisor and the nurse. People would at least know where not to go and who not to let them treat them. That nurse literally caused her daughter die for four minutes. So scary 😭

Whoever thinks Stephanie, Stephfiance, Cindy and Andrew are acting dramatic during this story is just straight out being disrespectful because you don’t know until it happens to you like Stephanie said. Also the fact that Cindy and Andrew had to deal with their infant having their heart stopped TWICE is just traumatizing and also that the way the nurses act and how the nurse acted when the ventilator said it needed to be checked and the way the nurse brushed it of and it turned out it was unplugged. As a parent of triplets who all spent time in the NICU I definitely know that there are nurses that are there for a check. The fact that we trust these people with the lives of our children and they can be so careless and heartless with our children. I pray that Mia does not suffer any long term damage for things that should and could have been prevented. My daughter was also intubated and the way that some RT’s would handle her was very difficult to watch how careless they would handle her. My daughter also had a similar experience when they would take out the mucus and got disconnected. The nurse also did the exact same thing and said whoopies as my daughter was coding. Sadly a lot of these nurses don’t take parents concerns seriously. As parents we have to be our childrens advocate and address anything that we feel is off.
