Fred Darrent bathed in the warm sunrays, a cocktail cup laid on the sand next his deck chair. He was happy to be alive after the war. The Star League came and went, Comstar came and went, the Republic too. But Miami and the beach were still there, before the Space, before the first Jumpship was ever built. The sea, the surfers, the bars, like more than a thousand years before. Or at least so claimed Mike, the owner of the sicilian granita stall at the end of Collins avenue, where Fred's hotel was. Maybe not. He was not an historian. But the thought of being part of something stable, whatever an universe at war could throw at it, was nice.

Your faithful companion, Götz von Berlichingen, is laid up waiting for obscure components. Three other 'Mechs in your company await similar repairs to mission critical systems, leaving the entire outfit with nothing to kill but time. Two years as a mercenary have come and gone; two years of counting kill tallies and close calls instead of days and nights. Witnessing the passage of time feels alien after so long within the fathomless sprawl of deep space travel, marked only by brief spasms of furious hot drops, lightning raids, and battlefield assassinations. Alone in your flat, away from your lancemates for the first time since first meeting, you gaze upon a sunrise you have heard of in legends but never witnessed. Yet somehow, the warm glow of the rising sun is a familiar comfort.

Nothing I love more than firing up MW5 (modded) with some Jason Skye mixes, then winding down with some Stackpole novel. I think I've found a good rhythm.
