Good to see Sam call FFG out on their dice strategy. Selling the base game with the absolute minimum so that they can make more bucks by selling buyers a dice pack has been the case with a few of their releases. I mean, how much extra would it cost for an adequate supply of dice to be in the game box? Peanuts I am guessing. When you consider the price of these games, it is nothing short of mean to skimp on the dice and then offer to sell you some more. FFG - buyers do notice these things.

Is there a mechanism that uses those detachable arms on the Cyber Demon mini? It would be cool if you could blow their arms off to weaken them, so they can't make ranged attacks, or if you push them over they can't get back up :D

You could drill holes in the arm/body sockets and put those mini magnets in the holes with glue. It's a well known practice with Warhammer 40K minis.

"All the monsters shoot" - Even the Pinkies? That would be weird. RE the Glory Kill: That appears to be an implementation of the new mechanism in the new DOOM game (which is excellent) and it sounds like it works much like it does in the game i.e it encourages movement and rewards the player with resources (health in the game - ammo if using the chainsaw).

I was looking for someone commenting on that. Yes, that mechanism is from the latest video game and i don't like it (in video game). I don't like doing and seeing that same animation over and over again. Same as in FarCry Blood Demon with consuming hearts. Becomes annoying very fast.

I think the "Glory Kill" is very thematic to the game since the newest game this is based on has them in it, injure them and run up and do it.

Seems like with DOOM, Conan, and TMNT we're starting to see some entries into this genre that go back to the basics: combat and loot. Games like Imperial Assault, Descent 2.0, and The Others streamline their dungeoncrawl experience by treating combat as ballast that slows the game down. In their scenarios, the heroes are basically on a timer, and combat is an action-sink that obstructs heroes from completing objectives. When someone like Boba Fett shows up in an IA scenario, it's anticlimactic because you don't really have time to fight him anyway.So, welcome, DOOM. Hope to see more like you that return to form.

Glad Sam chimed in on FFG's cheapness when it comes to including an "adequate"amount of dice in their games. God that bugs the hell out of me. But great review, I own Level 7[Omega Protocol] and Zombicide: Black Plague, and it looks like a mesh of the two to some degrees.

I love that it's a 1vs.ALL with no campaign. This way a single player is not forced to be always the bad guy. Gameplay also looks exciting and interesting. Instabuy for me!

Great review guys, game looks good, but to an extent I agree with Tom with the "sameyness" of FFG campaign/modular/miniatures games, but I do like the quicker and streamlined play of Doom and Black Plague, and I believe this game won't get a mess of expansions compared to the other two And Sam Thank you so much for addressing the dice issue with FFG. Every damn game they make has a dice pack that releases alongside it. It's bad enough they barely give discounts online anymore, now they want us to purchase more dice. Champions of Midgard came with 34 dice and Level 7[OP] came with 18. Two games from smaller publishers(compared to FFG anyway)...stop cutting corners already FFG. Don't even get me started on the inclusion of only 4 dice for BattleLore 2nd edition

Yeah, there a few demons that are "missing" from the game, most notably the Spider Mastermind and each of the weapons seem to have only one of the two mods they could get in the videogame. So there is room to add some more stuff like alternate weapon card sets, demons and room tiles. But it would not need more than 1 expansion to put in all the stuff from the videogame and besides the baordgame feels complete and with a ton of option already.

Ramonosuke If they do an expansion I'd just like Lost Souls and a Spider Mastermind (maybe some Archviles or Pain Elementals but I know they weren't in the new Doom). And MORE DICE. And if possible I'm sure more cards would be welcome. Or more scenarios.

I think ONE(yes FFG JUST O-N-E) big box expansion that includes the missing mod cards, missing demons, and new tiles/missions will suffice for this one. Simple and to the point.

The "Glory Kill" is a direct pull from the video game, just in case no one let Tom and Sam know that yet, and it seems to work very thematically as it does in the video game (in the video game you get a bonus ammo/health/armor for melee killing staggered enemies).

Looks like an ideal present for people who don't own Descent or Imperial Assault but want a quick game on occasions. Just pull it out, crack it open once in a blue moon and enjoy it. For me I am going to say no BUT if I see it on the shelf of my local store, I'm going to have to fight the urge to pick it up and that will be a tiny test of my nerve.

It looks like an interesting game... though, it seriously reminds me of "Gears of War" and looks like it plays about the same. The mini's look exactly like "Gears"... love the connective board pieces. It probably is a lot of fun to play.

My thought exactly, the thing about Gears of War though, the actual scenarios where always about reaching the end of the level asap with infinite re spawns and this makes killing enemies actually worse since the re spawn mechanics trigger when an enemy type is out of the game. What I found very quickly was that the point of the game was combining follow up actions each turn and leaving one of each enemy type active on the board to have the least number of enemies. This game might have slightly improved on that from what understand from the review, haven't played it though.

Very interesting. It definitely looks very samey but the fact that they incorporated mechanics like glory kills from Doom 4 so well is pretty cool. The lack of a story way sway me to pick it up as well since while imperial assault is great I just haven't had the time to actually attempt to play the thing, so it would be good to have a similar game to introduce people to the style so they would be more willing to play assault.

dascottman33 I'd recommend just going whole hog on Imperial Assault. I just started a campaign of it and it's fantastic. If you can, play with Star Wars fans and you'll get it to the table no problem.

Doom seems like a simplified version for a reason. This is really just a updated version (graphic-wise) of the original Doom board game, which was a pre-dated, unrefinded version of Descent. They're all just updated Heroquest clones, honestly.

I haven't been able to play the game for real yet, only the intro scenario by myself to learn the rules. The box says 2-3 hours but the rules by default assume you are playing an Operation, which is this games version of a mini campaign, consisting of six scenarios. So I suspect those 2-3 hours are the playtime for an Operation, which would mean most scenarios would have a playtime of about 30 mins. I cannot confirm this yet though.

Part of a game being called "fast" is the pace of it. If turns bounce back and forth quickly, I would call the game "fast." If it it doesn't take long to play as a whole, that's what I'd call "short."

Main thing I noticed from this vid that I hadn't noticed before was the horrible screencap pictures on the cards. Makes an otherwise high-quality game look super-cheap. Overall, though, looks like it won't be for me. I already have Imperial Assault, and I can play skirmish on that game to my heart's content.

Love the new digital game and board game has been a hit in a beer and pretzels way. Quick to play and just get right into the game killing demons and frag those Marines. This one I actually prefer to be the overlord side, quite enjoyable and I looooooove the universe that was brought forward with the new digital release. This game has been quite enjoyable and I can get the "not my taste/family game" here and honestly expected it here. Doom the family game haha interesting thought. I've owned Doom (and cannibalized it). I think it's great that there's a simplified one-versus-many game without a campaign. The main problem I have with Descent and so on is that I don't want to play it all the time. And if I play every couple months, then having a campaign actually detracts from the enjoyment. There will be more rules which tends to drag the game out to a certain extent and nobody will remember what they were doing in the game before. Also, not having a campaign makes it easier to pull out with changing game groups. If I run a campaign, I basically always have to get the same group of people together. If one is missing or if we're one player too many, then normally the campaign system can't cope with that. And I know this from experience. "Oh, yeah, no problem, come on in, we'll give you three extra levels," but then I feel cheated because I had to work hard to get where I am and others are just getting it for free. And you can't just let them come as a level 1 character because they always have to be protected and that's no fun for them. I don't think I'll hunt the game down just yet, but if I see it for a decent price, why not.

I just got my copy and what you (and Zee) says is exactly what attracted me to this. My group tried to get into Decent, but we felt like we had to play it each boardgame night to get the full experience and really make the game shine. So being able to pull out this and just play a single map as well as the more streamlined system made it an instant buy for me.

I play RPGs, (miniature) wargames, and board games with separate game groups. For example a game like Imperial Assault is too much a hobby game for BG group, too dry for RPG group, and too cluttered with cards/expansions for WG group. The pick up and play, streamlined nature of Doom means it can work for my BG group, or as a beer and pretzels game with WG group.

Mark Stith The missions are not campaign based. The rules suggest you play 6 missions in a row. The winner of 4 missions wins the series. But nothing carries over from mission to mission. The maps change, objectives change, monsters spawn by different rules, etc. No real ongoing story.

I think you guys really missed the mark on this review. More people should be talking about and playing this game. It is the best one-versus-many game FFG has ever made. It's super fast paced, easy to play but still has good tactical decisions, it is highly customizable and scale-able (something the recently-praised Conan totally lacks), and it has everything in the box needed to play for years - no expansion needed whatsoever. It might secretly be the best dudes on a board game of 2016. It's elegant, exciting, has amazing components, and plays like an absolute dream.
