Miami's "Chinatown" : Chinese Grocery Store & North Miami Beach Exploring (May 2022)

While Miami doesn't have an official Chinatown, this area in North Miami Beach is the closest to one. There is a Chinese grocery store in place, hair salon, bubble tea shop, and potential food court (although only one vendor). I also walk along 167th and 163rd Streets to explore the rest of the area and check out the other Asian businesses along the way.

I love ALDI since i was a kid. They have more than 4000 stores in Germany, separated in ALDI North and ALDI South. They revolutioned the discounter scene back in the 80's because of their low prices and simple arrangement of their stores and strict behaviour of their employees.

Strip malls in Florida are pretty much the same if you look. One supermarket or big box store, a nail place, a possible hair place, a Chinese restaurant, and that’s about it. The rest are filled in with just who can sign the lease. I saw like a tv repair, restaurants of different types, even a few doctor offices before. It’s just the same pretty much. You just can do so much. It’s kinda ridiculous as you see some random Chinese restaurant just across the street not even 30 feet from the last one. It gets repetitive. You sometimes get lucky with a Korean bbq joint or a decent restaurant though.

Actionkid on bird road in the SW part of dade county there is a Chinese store called lucky supermarket and a great dim sum place in the same plaza called kon-chou. I lived in Miami my whole life and those places have a been there 30+ years check them out!

Gas in Placerville, CA is $6.09 gal today. Those garlic toast things looked like croutons for salads. Really good. I wish we had an Asian market here. Love your walks.

Even though Miami has a Smal Chinatown. The Chintown in San Diego runs about a mile a half in The Kearny Mesa Aea. Convoy Stret from Baloba Ave to Clairemont Mesa Road. It has Jasmine,Emerald and a Rach 99 Market. Plus it has an Asian town at El Cajon Blvd on 45 to 47 stret. The Stringree District in the Gaslamp was the Original Chinatown. Major Ah Hang the Chinese Mayor in 1895 was in office. Now there are some remnants like the Chinese Benevolent Assdication is there.

The fruit and Vegetables are usually from somewhere in Florida as they spoil fast so local is key. You get out of the city and bam your hit with tons of farms. just how it is here. Rice usually is from California. There has been an explosion of Asian factories around the midwest so it pretty quick to get stuff. Cali is hosting the Siracha factory. The Seafood is likely from the waters just outside your very door though alaska is more you know. The Keys are farming Sea cucumber. you see it everywhere heck the citrus industry is big in Florida so prices are reduced because shipping isn't as far or they don't burn as much fuel.

When I lived in Miami in '05, that strip of NMB had like 5 Chinese stores and it was considered the "most Asian part of Miami".

Miami has one of the smallest (if not the smallest) Asian community of any major metro in the nation. As for its Jewish community, that's a completely different story. It's quite large and diverse.

Oh yeah, there's a really sizable jewish community not just in Miami, but all the way down to the Keys. When I was a kid down in Key Largo I knew several families that lived down there full time(and even more that moved back and forth, I think one of them had a summer home in Long Island.) and a few of their dads worked with my own in the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority back in the late 80's, early 90's.

Miami doesn’t have much of an Asian population, only around 2%. Miami simply doesn’t have a lot of STEM occupations. On top of that, the big drivers for Miami-Dade’s economy, tourism and real estate/construction, are just not industries where Asian-Americans are highly represented.

Miami has strange zoning laws, I swear. Orlando at least places of some ethnic diversity are grouped together so it’s a bit easier to get to. Though one or two might be odd buildings for some reason they are stand alones.
