An underrated masterpiece. The score is perfect. It rings with the sad repetition for the lives we desire but can never obtain.

Mann is the master at movie endings.
@1jackal17 жыл бұрын
I agree with all the sentiment from other comments than this is an unappreciated masterpiece. It easily sits within my personal top 10 films. Mann is often criticised for favoring style over substance, but surely he can be forgiven when the style is this good. No shot in this film is throw-away and every frame exhibits pure artistic beauty. Mann is a genius at crystalising the urban landscape and through his hyper real, expressionist lens he makes Miami the most beguiling and arresting it's ever been on celluloid. At its heart the plot is a fairly simple one; a drugs bust. However there are a multitude of moving parts which keeps the film breezing along and which dovetail - with the help of the tightest of editing - into a highly satisfying whole. The film has been accused of being far removed from its source inspiration, but this could not be further from the truth. Much of the film's story line, and even entire sections of dialogue, can be lifted straight from season 1 episode 15 'smuggler's blues'. Gina's ultimatum to Trudy's captor in the film is an homage to Crockett's famous lines to a kidnapper in season 1 episode 9 'Glades'. Many have also said that the relationship between the leads in the film was misjudged and lost the rapport of what made the tv series so great, when in fact Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell capture the absolute quintessence of Crockett and Tubbs. Yes they don't talk much, smile much, or even look at each other much, but they are a true partnership. They are like a well oiled machine with each knowing the other is the best at what they do, each knowing how the other works and each willing back the other up without hesitation. Tubbs is '100 per cent with Sonny' and Sonny is likewise. Go back an watch perhaps the most famous scene from the tv show - the drive along an open stretch of highway to 'In the air tonight'. Crockett and Tubbs barely speak at all, but perfectly convey the unequivocal trust they have. Anyone who says the film is unlike the show is either not a true fan or perhaps not familiar with the dark, gritty realism of the earlier seasons. Back to the film's ending and we see a brilliantly executed conclusion that manages to illuminate Sonny as the icon we know him to be. Here is a woman and the possibility of a type of happy, care free existence. The male with a strong code is a Mann protagonist mainstay, but when these men stray from their system, their code, they become lost. See Neil McCauley in Heat, Frank in Thief, Vincent in Collateral. Crockett manages to remain on the right path however. He knows his relationship with Isabella is an illusion, built on a fabrication of identity. In the final moments it is made clear that the true relationship of the film is Tubbs and Trudy's. Crockett knows this and he also knows who he is. He is willing to accept that his code may mean that he is alone. And so in a moment of gloriously understated heroism enveloped by those final frames of him disappearing into a mundane nightscape; he goes back to his partners. Back to the job..

The original ending was to be filed in Paraguay, but infighting between members of the cast and the director forced the producers to scrap it. Specifically Michael Mann & Jaime Foxx were not getting along because a number of issues with production. The original scripts ending had Isabella killed by the drug lord, who then is given up by Jose Yero as part of a deal between him and Crockett to let him go, which would become a point of contention with Tubbs. But all that was scrapped for a more mundane ending written on the fly. If you look closely, the final scene where Crockett is walking into the hospital is actually the same scene where he negotiated the final drug with Jose Yero. He's wearing the same clothes, has the cell phone in his hand. Michael Mann just created a hog posh of edited movie scenes with the music from Mogwai; cause he didn't have the time to write a new ending and bring in the actors for additional filming.

I like the ending as it is but the original ending from the first screenplay might have been much more melancholic: _INT._ _CYPRESS_ _HOUSE,_ _BEDROOM_ - _CROCKETT_ - _LATER_ _asleep._ _The_ _moonlight_ _is_ _silver_ _tinged_ _with_ _green._ _Someone_ _else_ _had_ _been_ _in_ _the_ _bed_ _with_ _him,_ _but_ _he_ _is_ _there_ _alone,_ _now._ _Crockett_ _wakes up._ _He_ _looks_ _around._ _She_ _was_ _there_ _and_ _now_ _she's_ _gone._ _He_ _gets_ _out_ _of_ _the_ _bed_ _and_ _looks_ _out_ _to_ _the_ _ocean_ _and_ _the_ _jetty._ _The_ _boat's_ _gone._ _She's_ _gone._ _Sonny_ _Crockett_ _looks_ _out_ _the_ _window._ _THE END_

Well maybe since the series just got a Blu-ray release it'll inspire the Mann to do a sequel.
@raulgomez16237 жыл бұрын
Would be hard to find a studio to budget a sequel for a film that barely made a profit, let alone one with a director like Mann who will blow pass budgets. Farrell, Foxx, and Mann, would do it in a heartbeat even 12 years after it was made, but the money will never be there.
@doctorgonzo18747 жыл бұрын
Yeah studios wouldn't budge on providing a budget for another one nor do I think Michael Mann would be up for a sequel to one of his films, have we ever seen a sequel to any of his other films? Even if they bomb at the box office I think they are underrated masterpieces. I wish he'd make more films.
