120 INCH/lbs. = 10 FOOT/lbs. I broke off the very first cam bearing bolt when I stupidly applied way too much torque. The service manual starts in ft/lbs then switches to inch/lbs at the cam bearing bolt spec. I knew that 120 ft/lbs sounded odd but tried anyway. Just thought I would let everyone know not to make the same mistake I did.

I broke one too, not by using a ft lbs torque wrench but because the inch lbs torque wrench failed to click and the ~160 in lbs I probably applied which snapped the bolt really doesn't feel like much more than the 110 ft lbs I correctly torqued them to once I had removed that bolt and gotten a working torque wrench

When applying torque to bolts stop as soon an the torque wrench clicks you went past on a few of the bolts so some are tighter than the others

At 5:40 you state that you are torqueing the camshaft caps to 120 ft/lbs. It should be 120 inch/lbs. As noted below, you will break your bolts if you use ft/lbs. Please correct this in the video as people who are still watching this video will run into problems!

He did stress inch-lb a couple minutes before that.

The RTV under the front caps really only needs to be towards the outer edges. It only serves to bridge the gap between the cam seal and the RTV in the corner for the valve cover gasket. If the RTV squeezes out on the actual cam journal where the cam rotates, it can cause damage and further leaks.

great info. does anyone know if the cap bolt sequence is the same for the 1.6 as the 1.8?

excellent video. very well explained. I am putting together the camshart in my miatta. I was not careful to rotulate de parte. Is that a big deal
@BuildingTheEXOCET6 жыл бұрын
Not sure what you are asking exactly but yes you need to rotate everything to check your timing
@RodriMagic5125 жыл бұрын
You should have marked all the parts to know where they did come from as you must put them back in the same order.

all have to get sequenced ..for sure for proper tightening , and thank you Exocet .....

Can you do this while the engine is still in the car
@BuildingTheEXOCET4 жыл бұрын
Yes. Head work on this engine would not require engine removal as far as I know.

Hey, what kind of oil is that red oil that you dipped the bolts you had a sequence for in. Also do you know if I have to remove the head to install aftermarket camshafts due to the larger size cams?
@BuildingTheEXOCET5 жыл бұрын
The red stuff is engine assembly lube. It's a lube for the parts so they aren't dry while the motor waits to build oil pressure. I wouldn't think you would have to remove the head to do a camshaft.

I mixed up my caps for my 1.6 do you know if there's a way to figure out the correct way?

You should have put the cam seals at the same time with cam cap then torque it
