I have uses all of the ones presented (though not those brands). I started with a simple desk top mic stand since it was most affordable. It however takes up real estate and as shown, often times not in the most ideal placement. Then I moved to an off desk boom (straight arm) setup because I had all I needed for it already with the photography equipment I already owned. That allowed me to free up desk real estate and move the mic exactly where I wanted it. But it was pretty much fixed in place and could not be moved around with ease. And its stand base took up FLOOR real estate. Then I moved to the scissor boom. There you go! This is, in my view the best option all around since it allows for not only perfect placement, but virtually limitless adjustment and placement options while also allowing you to have free movement of the mic. And they do NOT cost that much. You can spend as little or as much as you would like. They only real consideration IMO is how much weight the arm will support. But unless you just WANT one of the other types of mic supports, I would suggest simply going directly to the scissor boom from the start. And like I said, their price ranges will match the others pretty closely, and you can start from about $35 and go up from there. On another note.... scissor booms just look cool. LOL In my studio I also got a smaller scissor boom desk lamp that compliments my mic boom. And if you are like me, visual aesthetics matter and make me feel better when working. Cheers!

Like you said, visual aesthetics are very important. I recently upgraded my desk setup and got white cabinets and shelves and it made a huge difference. And it doesn't have to be too expensive. Best decision I've made for my setup. And I ended up using a stick stand desktop mic stand. Mine extends 27 inches so not in the way. Works great for me.

Hey, thanks for that overview. I was thinking about a boom, but will stick with some cheaper ones in the begining. Btw. it would be really usefull to use the audio of the mics we see in the video, wouldn't it? So we could actually hear the Mug on the Desk with or without propper protecion of the mic.

What's the best for a PC mount, I want something to hold the mic in front of my mouth while I talk to friends and we play games, however I don't want the stand/boom to impaire my vision, and I don't want it to pick up my keyboard which is a big problem right now. I got the AT2020 Mic.
@neilruedlinger4851
@neilruedlinger4851 7 жыл бұрын
+MarkSKristensen For the use you have in mind for your AT2020, have you considered a floor standing overhead broadcast boom, and use the AT2020 like a Shotgun microphone, to pick up your voice from over head? Something like this: images.sdj.netdna-cdn.com/D/Galaxy-Audio-MST-C90-90-Inch-Standformer-Quick-Set-up-Standard-Boom-Mic-Stand-detailed-image-2.jpg I don't know if the brand 'Galaxy Audio' has a shock mount to suit the AT2020; may be best to ask the manufacturer. BTW I don't know how good the quality is of the 'Galaxy Audio' products as I've never purchased their brand before. I searched google images and that was the first image I came across. Have you approached B&H Photovideo for help and advice on your requirement? I have bought from them a few times, and I recommend them for their high standard of customer service, their web site is: www.bhphotovideo.com

I'm looking at the Heil PLT-2 boom arm for my EV-RE20. Do you recommend purchasing a separate clamp instead of the default clamp that comes with it. I'm not looking to screw it into my desk but rather just want a stable solution if the default clamp is inadequate. Also, what do you think of the Rode PSA-1 boom arm for the aforementioned mic? I'm guessing I would also be purchasing the EV 309A shock mount for whatever boom arm I get. Thanks for your help. Do check out the CuteMonster Show podcast if you get a chance. How do these stands compare to booms if you're using a shockmount and the stand is adjustable height? Does the boom help absorb the vibrations, or is just the shock mount enough. Also, what about floor stands so you don't have the desk vibrations?

Great video, very informative. I know this is aimed at podcasterz etc., but I am wondering if it is advisable to use a boom as an alternative to a traditional mic stand for recording vocals. you never see booms in vocal booths so maybe there is a reason why they are not got for that purpose?

I want to put a computer microphone on some kind of support. However, no matter what kind of of support I choose, desk stand, desk stand with a gooseneck, or boom arm, if I want to have my microphone in front of me and rather close to my mouth (4-6 inches), then this assembly will partially obstruct the monitor of the computer. What is the best way to overcome this difficulty?

Does a dynamic mic need a shock mount?
@neilruedlinger4851
@neilruedlinger4851 7 жыл бұрын
+AG UT Depends on the dynamic mic used. I am waiting delivery for a Sennheiser e845S, and according to the marketing blurb, it's claimed the "Full metal construction and extensive suspension and shock-mounting minimize handling noise and signal interference." If the 'extensive suspension' and 'shock-mounting' do successfully minimize handling noise or desk 'thumps' then it probably doesn't need it. As the old saying goes 'the proof is in the pudding'.

I would love to know if you could find a third party shock mount and a good boom arm for a Razer Seiren. I've been searching for a while, but I cannot find any, though that may be just me! The ones that Razer sell are a bit out of my price range, as I am planning to buy the Seiren mic, a third party pop filter, a third party shock mount and a boom arm for it. The Seiren itself is about 4.72 x 4.73 x 11.74 in, according to Amazon, and since you know more about recording in general, based on what's here, a recommendation or two for the accessories to go with the microphone would be greatly appreciated.

bro why would you buy that expnive mic if you can get almost the sme mic for almost 30 bucks or cheaper
@neilruedlinger4851
@neilruedlinger4851 7 жыл бұрын
+Venlity Different people have different voices, and one person on a particular microphone, may sound different on a different microphone. In terms of cost, cheaper microphones are Ok if a person has unique voice frequency characteristics making them sound good. In terms of durability, cheaper microphones may not last as long, compared with higher cost microphones. Higher priced microphones also have additional built-in features to help reduce handling noise, or different pick-up sensitivity patterns.
@neilruedlinger4851
@neilruedlinger4851 7 жыл бұрын
+Venlity Selecting a microphone, is like selecting a pair of shoes or a hat; the user must be comfortable wearing the shoes or the hat, or the talent must feel their voice is recorded for the clearest possible play back quality. Different people have different voice frequency characteristics, and one microphone may have a particular low frequency, mid-range frequencies and high frequency characteristics that makes the talent sound really good. For example Rode microphones emphasize low frequencies much more, and a person with a deep voice, or somebody with strong low frequency voice characteristics may sound "boomy", so Rode may not be a microphone choice they would be happy with. A person with particular mid and high frequency characteristics may sound better with a Rode microphone. Other people may sound better having their voice picked up by a Shure or Sennheiser microphone. Whilst other people may have a voice, with particular frequency characteristics that sound really good with a cheaper microphone. Higher priced microphones also may be built from more durable materials, such as a metal body, and internal metal components for ruggedness. Or they may have internal construction that minimize handling noise, or a built-in pop filter. Another issue is the microphone may have a supercardioid or hypercardioid pick up sensitivity, or consistent off axis voice level pick up. Also other microphones may allow for the talent to stand a few feet farther away and will still pick up the voice with a consistent voice level. Another design feature is a microphone may have the ability to handle loud noises or performers very well, without any audio saturation or distortion.

+Nefph Depends on individual needs. Microphone stands are for hands free work; for example if the talent prefers to do voice over work whilst holding the script to help them keep on track with their performance, or some people need to operate a keyboard or need to move their hands as they express themselves, a mic stand is very useful.

4:35 "These are great" . Really? Those off center, cantilever boom clamps have been failed catastrophically on every boom I've ever seen. I don't see any improvement in the Heil clamp over the YouHappyBuy brand clamps. That off center hole just creates too much leverage for that tiny clamp. The desktop and flush mount, and some other brand clamp mounts, don't put the boom hole on the edge of the assembly. I would never recommend, use, or install a clamp on mount with that off center design.
