Mica Ct. 2nd Alarm Fire (Shelton, CT) 6/22/21
SHELTON, CT - Shortly after 5:00pm on June 22, 2021, the Shelton Fire Department received multiple calls for a structure fire on Mica Court in Aspetuck Village Condominiums. First report from the scene stated heavy fire involvement of a middle unit of a 3 unit condominium. Shortly after, fire had traveled to the attic space of all 3 units and the fire attack turned defensive. In all, 5 lines and 1 aerial master stream were placed in operation, and the bulk of the fire was knocked down in approximately one hour. Mutual aid came from Derby, Monroe, Trumbull, Stratford, and Ansonia for both operations on scene and City coverage. The Red Cross assisted with the relocation of 3 families, all of which had safely evacuated the structure before FD arrival. There were no reported injuries to firefighters or residents, and cause was not known at the time of this writing.

Well, they had the aerial spraying water from up above for quite awhile, and judging by the hoses that run all over the scene and disappear, they were using the hoses at other homes. I'm reading it was 3 apartment condos attached and all of the hoses had to be fed from a single water main. All the guys standing around are the backup to let others take breaks, do other work like cut vent holes in the roof, etc. The single water main coming into the neighborhood would be a major contributing factor to the lack of water on the fire, as well as splitting their available water over 3 active condos.

Please read my Post...there is a chain of command and until your allocated a task you stand and wait...another reason for so many crews is was a multi dwelling condo ... Yes water was being applied and you only say the Alpha side, the change in smoke colour said so

I lost my home to fire in 1986. So, my sympathy goes to the home owners. it is a great loss, hopefully no one was hurt.

1. Get the truck co. out the way- single family homes do not require a truck in front. 2. From the start of the video the smoke tells you the fire is in the building-I.E. above you, and not in the living space - I.E. furniture. So start pulling ceiling. This is lightweight gusset plate construction, no one should be on the roof. 3. I assume the chief without the helmet is in charge. Stop being a mobile command post and sit your ass down. You what appears to be about ten other chefs on scene, use ICS and start appointing task to them, here's a good starting- Operations, Safety, Interiour, Ventilation, Staging, R.I.T..

I have never seen so many guys standing around and picking their asses with a charged hose line on the ground in front of them and a very obvious need for its use. The concept of advancing a hose line into the structure through the front door was beyond their scope of work. But when you have your main chief officer rolling around on the active fire ground without his helmet that says a lot about how the department is ran.
@Lithane97
@Lithane97 3 жыл бұрын
Suppose you skipped reading the description, there was 3 condos involved. The charged line would have been at an adjacent condo. They were also having pressure issues, pretty clear by the flat hose they finally carry over around 3:30.

Ok the guy with his foot on the hose is actually monitoring the water pressure in the line...the slightest drop is felt as the hose looses its shape and begins to flatten, if you catch it you can avoid a life threatening situation of running out of water...these guys in blue play a vital roll in helping get tools, run out hose linens, grab ladders off trucks, assist with breathing gear...so before you bag them out find out who and what they do

Instead, these guys came for the BBQ! Whether you are reserved or volunteer, training is the same! So that's NOT an excuse for this catastrophy either!! It's just another American Firefighter disaster as usual! I am an Irish firefighter. We are all Retained! If we stood around like this, scratching our holes while a handful go in and put out fire! Ladies and gentlemen it take 3 things to have a fire; a fuel source, oxygen, and an ignition source. If you remove one of those things you have no fire. What we see here is the removal of the fuel source method of extinguishing the fire. By letting the fuel source, in this case the house, burn to the ground, the fire will eventually go out. Not true. These condos have light weight truss construction, once the fire hit the common space roof, there was absolutely nothing that could have been done to save this condo. Oh by the way do you know how many firefighters have been injured and killed fighting fires in light weight construction over the last 20 years, about 250......yeah just ask Green Bay, WI what it's like to lose a firefighter to one of these fires....

Fire fighting,, preferably in the volunteer world has really gone to the wayside for a couple of reasons. First we have turned into a working culture,,,work first a pleasure 2nd. Because of that, fireman are not getting training like they used. Companies nowadays wont even allow you to join. They dont want you at a fire when your supposed to be at work. And then the firefighting tactics changed with political correctness. When I was on a fire company in the 70,s there was no ABCD side. You arrived and chief told you what size hose to pull and make a inside attack fast. Fire training better improve.

Another example of USA departments not knowing what the priorities are. Find the fire and put water on it. Notice the front door open creating a wonderful flow path to feed the fire fresh air. Notice no water going through that gable end vent to fog the attic. All that water being applied, and the fire continues because nobody is looking for the burning material to get water on it. How much water does one spot need? All that manpower and finger pointing, and nobody knows what to do. Now hear this! That house could have been saved if they went inside WITH A HOSE INSTEAD OF EMPTY HANDED, found the burning material and put some water on it. If it is in the attic, you open a small hole, look around for the fire and put some water on it. If you can't see flames but you know it is up there, you fog the attic. That could all be done with the water you brought with you. People! Your heroes have no clue what this job is, let alone how to do it.

I read a lot of the comments here as I have at all these videos over the past 15 years, on a daily basis. This performance is not the exception. This is the Norm throughout the USA. "It's high school graduation. Look around you. Who are going to become firefighters and who are going to go out there and create something?" Just because they Joined Up, Dressed Up and Showed Up, doesn't mean they have the common sense and logic and the work ethic to do the job safely and effectively. What you saw is who they are.
