That adjustment is really just to adjust tension and center the “bar” in the housing. Backlash pre set in the gear cut. My service manual for my trailblazer SS just tells you to center the bar in the housing and then check tension. In spec will be bar centered and 17ft ft.lbs of force spinning the pinion. It’s different adjustment than a diff even though it’s the same concept. It’s the angle of the and depth of teeth cut to bar flatness that makes backlash not change if the bar tension moves in or out. I been rebuilding steering racks in trailblazer SS because they are rare special units. Now I’m about to try doing my 330ci yellow. they are definitely simple units to build if you got the tool to pull the center seal from the housings! Don’t bother if you don’t got it.
