The WRC is the FIA World Rally Championship, a tough motorsport using rally cars on real roads around the world. Watch the best rally drivers battle on gravel and asphalt roads with mud, rain, dust, ice and heat! Watch high speed action as the rally drivers power slide and drift round narrow corners, go flat out over a big jump or through a watersplash, handbrake turn round a hairpin, survive a big moment, or have a massive crash! Rally requires maximum attack and careful tactics to become world rally champion.
Each rally has timed sections called special stages, on closed roads. Drivers complete these stages as quickly as possible. A co-driver reads pace notes that explain the hazards ahead. Rally drivers use the same rally car to travel to each stage on public roads, following normal traffic regulations. The crew which completes all the stages in the shortest time is the rally winner. Championship points are won using the same scoring system as Formula 1. The championship is administered by Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), motorsport's world governing body.
Over 30 countries have hosted WRC rallies. Rally Monte Carlo, Rally Argentina, Rally Finland, Rally Portugal, Tour de Corse on Corsica, France, Rally Sardegna on Sardinia, Italy, Safari Rally in Kenya, Acropolis Rally in Greece, Rally New Zealand, Rally Australia, Rally Japan, Rally GB, Rally Catalunya, Rallye Deutschland, Rally Mexico and many more.
Some of the world's greatest drivers have won the FIA World Rally Championship for Drivers, like Colin McRae, Carlos Sainz, Walter Röhrl, Stig Blomqvist, Petter Solberg, Ott Tänak. The list of world rally champions includes many Finnish rally drivers like Juha Kankkunen, Tommi Mäkinen, Ari Vatanen, Marcus Grönholm, Hannu Mikkola. French drivers have had success with Sébastien Ogier, and 9 times world champion Sébastien Loeb. Famous drivers from other motorsports have come to try rally driving like Ken Block from Rallycross, and Robert Kubica and Kimi Räikkönen from F1.
Car companies compete for the prestigious FIA World Rally Championship for Manufacturers awarded to the most successful WRC constructor. Winners include Citroen, Hyundai, Volkswagen and Peugeot. Ford have had success with the Ford Escort, Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta when the M-Sport team won in 2017.
The 1980's featured the iconic Group B rally cars like the Lancia 037 and Delta S4, Peugeot 205 T16, MG Metro 6R4, Ford RS200 and Audi Quattro.
Japan dominated the 1990s with the Mitsubishi Lancer, Subaru Impreza, and Toyota Celica and Toyota Corolla. Toyota returned to the WRC in 2017 with the Toyota Yaris WRC, winning in 2018. There was no W league in WRC. Michelle Mouton entered the sport and was competitive speed for speed against everyone else. Proof that there is no gender bias in motor racing. If you're fast, you make it. And Michelle Mouton was mighty quick. The same can be said for Sabine Schmitz, RIP. The only exception to that rule is if you're super-rich and the team needs your money to survive. That's when you get the likes of Mazepin competing at the highest level.

That's only proof that one female made it, nothing more. From what I read, there were quire notable comments from male drivers who didn't consider they could ever lose to a female, or when they did they took it badly, which is is clear proof that there was some gender bias in motor racing.

@@ingerasulffs it was the 80's, so it was sexism, not gender bias, but most of us grew up from then and gave women a fair break, especially after Michelle Mouton showed the guys that she was equally as good as any of them, it's only a shame that no women since then have reached the level Michelle did. She was leading a trail and nobody seemed to follow her, even though I know she was a massive influence on a lot of women. I met her in 1996 at Goodwood, she was an amazing person to talk to, so clued up about cars, we had a right good chat, and she set the fastest time up the hill that day in the group B Quattro, it was awesome to see.

Now if you want to know the truth then it’s here. **** At the Rallye Sanremo in Italy, a mixed surface event with tarmac and gravel, Mouton took the lead when the local star Michele Cinotto crashed and held off Henri Toivonen and Ari Vatanen to take the victory.This marked the first time a female driver had won a world championship event in rallying. Now you all got it. Go check if you doubt it. Also Audi just came up with 4 wheel drive car. The other guys were on two wheel drive cars and you now how hard it is for them to keep up with a four wheel drive car especially on corners. So speak facts.

sorry bud, but I think you are talking out of your hat there, she was in many people's eye's, World Champion in 1982, and she wasn't the reserve driver, she was a fully paid up number one Group B driver, Audi may not have noticed what a great driver she was, but they kind of did by giving her a full Group B works car, you only got those if they were invested in you, they didn't just give a Group B car to anyone.

@@Sennaxm71 You may be right. My understanding was that Audi hired here to help Hannu Mikkola to win the pilot's championship, and to help Audi to win the manufacturer championship. And for the next season's after 1982, she was granted by Audi only a part of the seasons. But it was a long time ago, perhaps my admiration for her made me "arrange" some details.
