This piece has a bit of fun history behind it! "Waves" was my first original composition which I was fortunate to record with live session professionals.
The piece was born during the Summer of 2010 when I was 15 years old. It was during that Summer that I made my first trip to Los Angeles to attend Grammy Camp. Grammy Camp is a serious program offered by the Recording Academy to help high school students build a successful career in music. As program director David Sears always said, "Grammy Camp is not a fantasy camp, it's a REALITY camp"! The best part of the experience was being introduced to other high school students, many of whom are actually working in the music industry today.
"Waves" was written collaboratively in my Grammy Camp band, "Dirty Magic", under the direction of the great Venezuelan jazz pianist, Otmaro Ruiz. Other members of the band and cowriters included Zaccheus Taylor, Brandon Woodward, Jake Botts, Travis Werling and Mike Harrison. We even got to perform a brief snippet of the song for broadcast on the KTLA evening news. I went back home with only a very quick recording of the song.
I returned home to New Jersey wanting to do more with the song that we had started in Los Angeles. I spent the following months refining the piece and creating sheet music for the band. With help from my mentor, Dave Rosenthal, we put together a band to record the song in his studio. This recording was made with the great line up of Joe Bergamini, Greg Smith and Dennis DelGaudio. I played keys and saxophone.
I don't recall how we came up with the name, "Waves". Maybe being in California we had the beach on our minds. Pexels dot com again came to the rescue with a great free library of film stock. I'm grateful to all the great cinematographers who make their work available....Asad Photo Maldives, Cottonbro Studio, Daniel Torobekov, James Cheney, Jess Loiterton, Jon Leo Hisuler, Peggy Johnson Philip Waikoloa, Adrien Jackta, Axhmet Kurt, Engineerings Akyurt, Lukas Rodriguez, Mikhail Nilov, Pixabay, Roman Odintsov and Ronald Hayward.
