Michael C. Hall on Dexter Revival and Controversial Ending (Exclusive)

ET’s Matt Cohen spoke with ‘Dexter’ star Michael C. Hall about the show’s revival, ‘Dexter: New Blood.’ Hall also shared his thoughts on the series’ controversial ending in 2013 and if it motivated him to reprise his role as Dexter Morgan to give the character and fans justice. ‘Dexter: New Blood’ premieres Nov. 7 on Showtime.

I'm honestly hoping for a Sherlock Series 2 like fakeout where the gun was a bb gun or like filled with blanks and Harrison was having hallucinations of blood. Then Harrison is the Season 2 Villain and you see that Trinity Killer is his dark passenger and he's been killing people all along

it should have happened and been a season two and a fucked up one with two stories him either on the run from his past and this time for real and killing becomes a thing where .. . the code is broken don't get caught. he's also alternatively it could be a double plotted story with him and Harrison meeting in the end to see the death row appeals or he does some crazy shit to get out idk but then him and Bautista kill each other show ends lol . idk I have so many ways check out our subreddit r Dexter

I can't even express how delighted I am that Dexter is returning! The ending didn't sit well with me. At all! I think I even yelled "What the fu*k was THAT?!! Really appreciate his candor on how the show's ending was AWFUL and a slap in the face to fans - usually actors keep those sorts of opinions to themselves out of respect to the show-runners and give some non-committal answer like "Well I know it probably wasn't for everybody but I'm proud of what we created these last 8 seasons...blah blah blah." When they eventually release a Game of Thrones documentary in 5 or 10 years I'd love to hear from actors removed so many years from *that* awful ending.

I didn't see Dexter at all until 2016 and binged all seasons thanks to it being my best friends favorite show. Huge fan of Michael C. Hall. I first discovered him many years ago when he played David Fisher on Six Feet Under. If you've never watched that show I'd *HIGHLY* recommend it. He's a phenomenal actor and no one could have played Dexter better. I'm sad to see it end now that New Blood is over. Jack Alcott played Harrison very well in my opinion. I'm going to re-watch the entire series again, as I own all of them on DVD.

Should’ve just left it alone or brought it back and kept it going because as far as I’m concerned this season did not exist I always thought the last episode finale of season eight was what it should be those that wanted the additional epilogue I would say you guys just didn’t understand what we as the viewers were looking for Dexter did not have to die there was no sense of that in fact the only way to support the original series is that Dexter should’ve lived now it basically makes no sense that he died because the whole point of being Dexter was that he survived any Situation in anyway so I think you guys got it wrong from this viewers perspective.

The ending of New blood was absolutely heartbreaking and it fucking disappointed almost all of the fans. And no us fans didn't want anything tied up. We really highly expecting Dexter and his son to go off and make it a family business type of thing. You guys ruined all of our fantasies our sick twisted fantasies. You guys just flushed down the toilet. Congratulations. The only way anybody would have enjoyed that type of ending is if Harrison initially wanted to run away with him, but they both realized the only way that Harrison could get away is if he killed Dexter. And the exchanged and I love you to one another before Harrison finally had to make the shot . This could have gone a thousand times better if they did it that way or if they had Dexter go to prison it admit all of his crimes and then eventually escape with the assistance of his son who has this amazing genius brain that they barely even touched on in New blood. And then they go off and assume new identities and become this crazy duo team serial killing serial killers. 😂 That was literally my fantasy is that they would go and be like these two crazy vigilante Heroes ridding the world of worst kind of people.

Well I finally got around to seeing the new series. I thought the ending to Dexter was poorly executed but after seeing the ending of New Blood, it makes the ending to the original series look downright ingenious. Not sure what Michael C. Hall was thinking but it almost appeared that they ran out of money and needed to rush to a quick ending. It's sad because the series started off so strongly and it easily could have ended with the killing of Kurt. Michael are you listening?? What the heck did you do here?? Killing off Dexter is like seeing James Bond getting killed off in "No Time To Die". You just don't do it! You did NOT have to do it. As a fan I feel like you just took a dump on your fan base. Do us all a favor, you can correct this by making it a dream sequence and doing another season. Think Dallas and Bobby Ewing and you will get my drift. SO pissed off right now. BTW, spent 30 years in the Television business, saw a lot of series screw ups but this one takes the cake!

I'm currently on episode 9 and even though I wished there wasn't so many kids involved in this one it still was a good revival. And the kid playing Harrison is a good actor too. I'm almsot done with the season. And I always knew this show was coming back from the way the last episode ended on the original series. There's was hope for more....

It's not controversial, we all have the same opinion. But I am glad we got more of the show. Wish we could get even more

I don't know about others, but I kind of was quite satisfied with the Show's finale episode. It kept lot of questions regarding Dexter hanging and it's a good thing. For a character who is as comlicated as Dexter and for the viewers who were so heavily invested for 8 years in Dex's character, there can be no morally right or societally accepted solution in the finale. Dexter was an outlier, and the solutions to stop the character from doing "morally" wrong things have to be unconventional too. Also if you look at it, thanks to the so-called unsatisfying ending, we get a Dexter Sequel or a reboot. If there was a final closure in the show, there wouldn't have been a sequel now... 😊

I agree with you 100% concerning him. I loved that he exiled himself to be alone with his guilt. To me (I rewatched all seasons last month), there are still two things that really bothered me, writing wise though...first is of course that they killed Debra. The last season focused on her heavily trying to get her shit together to finally just get killed...wasn't satisfying in the least. And second, the fact that Dexter let his son go away with a killer like Hannah countered everything he tried be as a father. The last few seasons where he always had a nanny was pretty bad in my opinion. But I'm very happy and excited for the new season! I have so many questions, which is a good thing haha

Would have liked for the final scene to be an arrest and a future series of him breaking away and on the run, still doing his thing
