This is the trio who was playing in June 1971 at Montreux Jazz Festival with Michael Carvin on drums and Henry Franklin on bass. I was at this concert, great! You can find 2 LP from this tour they did from Paris to Montreux and Copenhagen. On Fresh Sound Rec. is the Montreux live 71 and on Arista Rec.is the September 71 session recorded at the Montmartre club.Very interesting how they play in and out at that time on simple blues or standards

Wow a rare 18/12/14 walnut bop kit. A incredibly super hard (color) kit to find... especially in those sizes. Damn they sound wonderful!

Sonor drums have such a pure tone, and are some of the finest drums ever made. MC is a new name to me but he can sureplay, and yes that flat ride sounds amazing, although from my own experience, I find they aways sound better to the listener, rather than the player.

This is the Hawes 1971 trio which recorded also in London with altoist Peter King ("Anglo-American Jazz - Phase 1") some time in late August 1971. Roger Hunter and myself co-authored the Hampton Hawes Bio-Discography in 1986 - Manyana Publications - now out of print. I had an exchange of communication with Henry Franklin in the 1980s and he added some very interesting detail. My question is: Any more of this concert - probably from the Salle Pleyel in Paris??

this is more evidence that jazz is dead - there is nothing that a general audience can grasp - brilliant technique no question but how long can you marvel at technique without substance that you can understand - this is steroidal improvisation - impressive for other musician but not for most paying customers

Here we have a true one of a kind master of drumming and instead of others marveling at not just critiquing as some do to boast their ego to make themselves sound important is annoying no substance nothing. Michael Carvin skill on drums is extraordinary he's not performing for audience approval he's playing to creative improvisation to add to the masterpiece being performed whether the audience approves or not is unconsequencial
