"Michael Collins" is an Irish Ballad about the life of the famous Irish revolutionary and politician Michael Collins. August 22nd 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of his demise in an ambush near Béal na Bláth where he was shot and killed. Although his position as a general in the Free State Army makes him controversial among Anti-Treatyite circles, it cannot be denied that his actions during the Tan war were crucial in the bringing about of an independent Irish state.

The GPO was in a sense a folly, but something had to be done and no one seemed to be stepping up. When they executed them, the evil being faced was magnified. It showed the moral bankruptcy of the English authorities. Hearts around the world mourned, as far away as Australia where a huge Irish diaspora had settled.

I would say they wouldn’t be fond of him. I’m not a Marxist but I am a republican socialist and he created a 26 county state backed by the British government to kill his fellow comrades.
