It's almost 100% accurate. Everything you see there is available today. We have treadmills (KatVR), we have face scanning (Kinect, CodecAvators, VisionPro), we have desktop-environments-in-VR (WMR Portal, VisionOS), hand tracking (Quest, VisionPro), video calls (VisionPro), goofy 3D stuff (WMR Portal), voice commands (WMR Portal), even the loading animation is exactly what you find in many modern VR games. People losing balance in VR is also 100% on point (see /r/VRtoER). The only thing we don't have is everything nicely integrated into a single VR ecosystem, e.g. Quest does not have a good VR desktop environment, WMR does not have hand tracking, VisionPro does not support treadmills, document/file management is still rather lacking everywhere, but the features are all there. Furthermore any goofiness in the movie can be excused by the VR system in the movie itself being a demonstration prototype, not a mass-market consumer device.

I remember watching this back then and being blown away by virtual reality, wanting to experience it myself. Took a long time, but it was worth it. I know many people consider VR a joke, but there's quite some gems to get lost in. Oh and also: crazy to think how long Donald Sutherland has been old looking with white hair, and he's still acting 😄

Just came here from watching the Wal Mart VR shopping thing. In a way Michael Crichton was way ahead of his time in predicting that mega corps would try and make simple tasks, like looking up a file or shopping on the internet, into a clunky, bizarre, and completely unnecessary VR experience.

When I saw this I thought it was the most preposterous needless segue in a weird movie to begin with. But here I am, 26 years later after getting an Oculus Quest 2, seeing how this tracks. And it's actually there. With exception to the fact that you can't really represent yourself well in VR. It's also to say, sadly, that VR is kind of cheese. It was cheese in 1994, and it's equally cheese today. So it still has a way to go. Also, Zoom calls in that video. Yipes. This really is the future.

I was expecting something extra cringy, but it holds up pretty well up until the 3:00 mark. The headset, the platform he's standing on, the pixelated character coming to life, the Assassin's Creed-like effects, etc. Too bad it turns into a mess after that, what with the DELETING alerts, the angel and the walking portrait with a wireframe body.

why is the Chroma Key so poor, Granted even Sienfeld episods had HORRIBLE Chroma Key, but I'd imagine this sequence would be where all the money is spent, and it looks like a CD Rom adventure game with Mark Hamill and Christopher Walken. Waited 27 years to see just this scene alone, and amazed it's not even on par with Johnny Mnemonic, and that was CAMPY!

This entire segment hurts the movie. It's corny as hell. sad thing is there's some actual ahead of it's time concepts in the movie, but the things that are wrong or didn't pan out will always seem more apparent- and shit like having Douglas stumble around a 1994 CGI depiction of a library is just goofy.
