Michael Fabiano sings “Il Lamento di Federico” by Cilea

WQXR presented an evening of Italian opera and song live in The Greene Space on October 7, featuring tenor Michael Fabiano, winner of the 2014 Richard Tucker Award.
A preview to the October 12 Richard Tucker Gala, the evening also featured performances by Richard Tucker Grant winners Jennifer Johnson Cano, mezzo-soprano, and Brandon Cedel, bass-baritone. Legendary soprano Renata Scotto made a guest appearance in conversation with WQXR’s Naomi Lewin, discussing her collaborations with Richard Tucker and her role as a master teacher imparting the traditions of Italian opera to a new generation of American opera singers.

+mario marini I very much agree. Though I like Mr.Fabiano slightly better. He has darker timbre. I sure hope that he will someday undertake the title role of Verdi's Otello. I think he has all the qualities one would expect. Of course he still needs some more experience but I know he'll get there. All the best to him. He's my favorite young tenor right now.

OTELLO? Are you kidding? Fabiano is a full lyric tenor with a tiny bit of heft. Otello is a dramatic animal from another planet. Singing Otello would be the biggest mistake of his future life. That's how promising voices turn to shit; by branching out of their fach and taking on roles they were never vocally designed to touch.

Reminded me very much of Lanza's supercharged rendition of this piece of 50 odd years ago. This man, very good but doesn't have or ever will have the charisma Lanza had. (with all his faults)

Maggi Heilweil You don't get to be an accompanist at this level without being a supreme musician. I heard perhaps two splashed notes , as well as marvellous tone and power, not to mention sensitivity to the needs of the singer. I've heard Murray Peraiha play wrong notes. ..It didn't mean he needed to be sneered at by trolls.
