@edraith Superb. Even without an purely Italianate sound his phrasing, range, intonation, breath control, darkness of tone, control of diminuendi and piani is exemplary. He also looks gorgeous, which helps in performance. Mario Lanza.... yes, a terrific tenor voice, but he wasted it in Hollywood films and Italian musical travelogues. An operatic artist is judged ON STAGE.

@@Celon. , Lanza per contratto cinematografico non poteva cantare dal vivo un'opera perche' aveva una voce minuscola e in teatro era una mosca e non poteva fare cattive figure. Non esistono neppure opere registrate intere. Era un cantante da disco e da canzonette e sotto sotto un mezzo bluff. Io l'ho trovato sempre generico, turistico.

Sorry, I'd rather listen to Lanza any day of the week. Yes, Lanza does reinforce the voice a bit, but he doesn't use 'strength over technique' to the extent that Kaufman does.

E ma va là, quanto astio! Ho studiato per anni ed ascoltato per anni e cantato per anni. Per mio gusto Kaufmann sarebbe un eccellente baritono, nonostante la incredibile facilità negli acuti. Può darsi il mio parere sia viziato dal mixaggio delle registrazioni, giacché non l'ho mai udito dal vivo, ma a me sembra proprio un baritono (e non vedo perché la cosa sia offensiva!).

Es un auténtico Tenor Dramático. Su voz es muy parecida a la de Giuseppe Giaccomini... Pero, en los pianísimos dilata la faringe y emite una voz opaca, perdiendo brillo. Los italianos le llaman "voce di gola"... Al cantar debe ser proyectada HACIA ADELANTE con todo el timbre, a cualquier altura de la escala musical y con cualquiera de las vocales... La diferencia es fácil distinguirla cuando larga toda la potencia de su maravillosa voz tiene todo el TIMBRE, BRILLO y POTENCIA de lo que es su voz natural...

es que precisamente opacar la voz no es un defecto. Callas cuando tenía que pasar de fortes a pianos tambien cambiaba la voz, incluso perdiendo brillo. por eso los interpretes, no los cantantes, tienen la virtud de sacrificar notas o colores para imprimir dramatismo. hacerlo es harto dificil porque si no se sabe colocar la gola se puede quebrar la voz o rompe la linea de canto, por lo que no es posible medir el rendimiento solo por algunos elementos de su técnica cuando son totalmente admitidos. si estrangularía la gola no puede apianar, lo que saldría sería un sonido oclusivo semejante a "cantar bajito" lo que cortaría la linea de canto. la musculatura de Kaufmann produce lo mismo que sucedía en la garganta de Callas, no tiene que recolocar para pasar del pianissimo al forte haciendo saltar la nota. es lo que se debe conceptuar como voz absoluta donde los tres registros no están separados por pasaggio sino se conectan en glisando y mantiene la linea de canto. para que esto suceda la laringe debe modificar gradualmente el paso del aire y la voz cambia inevitablemente. esto no se puede ver en un tenor lírico que generalmente, desde mediados del siglo XX han venido modificando la partitura para no fracasar.

Absolutely marvelous!! Kaufmann is a great singer. But why do so many opera fans on KZbin write so many nasty things about him? My favorite tenor doing this song has long been Jussi Bjorling. Another great singer but quite different. Bjorling sound was lighter and sweeter yet it had real ring and bite at the top. A wonderful voice for verismo operas. Kaufman's is far more baritonal. So the critics say Bjorling sounded like a Choir boy not a man. And other critics they say Kaufman isn't really a tenor at all. They said the same thing about Domingo. Become a famous tenor and the knives come out. The answer is - there's more than one way to sing tenor. Kaufman is exceptionally musical. He is sensitive to what's in the score and he is sensitive to what the composer really wanted. Pavarotti for example is much less so. His vocalism is damn near perfect but he was musically unimaginative. I heard Pavarotti live many times but alas Kaufmann never came west to San Francisco. But it doesn't matter so much this time because hearing someone live tells you about the sound and size of the voice. It doesn't tell you anything about the musicianship that you can't hear on a recording. Many KZbin opera fans are in love with the Mario Del Monaco kind of voice. Or Mario Fillipeschi. Steely hard sound up to a blazing top. Me too. I love both of these singers but I like other kinds too. I once heard Ludovic Spiess as Calaf. Very impressive live. Hell of a big powerful voice with plenty of squillo. So I bought his opera recital record where he sang some Mozart. I at that time had heard every one of the Big Five Mozart opera recordings and all the tenors on them. I later sang (as a bass) in all five. Spiess was the worst Mozart tenor I have ever heard. I liked Simoneau - a tenor not half as loud as Spiess. Kaufmann sings Puccini and also sings Mozart. I don't want to hear Del Monaco singing Almaviva or Florez singing Rhadames. Kaufmann is very remarkable. Sort of like Domingo but with a more reliable top.

@@judithcressey1682 This is a very popular aria. I have CD of the whole thing although I've never heard it in the theater. There is another wonderful and sometimes recorded baritone aria in it. As I remember it's about a goat fighting a wolf or something. The opera's plot isn't too good but much of the music is great. My point is that every tenor for a century or so has recorded this aria. If you don't like Kaufmann, try another. Actually you shouldn't be writing to me at all. These world famous singers do not ask me for advice on their proper repertoire. Maybe they should. I would tell Florez to stick to lighter Rossini and forget about Puccini or Verdi. I would encourage Terfel to drop the Wagner and do basso buffo roles or Rogers and Hammerstein.

Non mi sembra un aria adatta al cantante fa molta fatica.... Lo conoscevo di nome ma è la prima volta volta che lo ascolto!. Difficilmente vado con i cantanti lirici dopo gli anni 70..... Pur avendo una certa esperienza non riesco poi nemmeno a capire la sua vocalità tenore o baritono che vuol fare il tenore? Nei centri poi si sente una certa spinta eccessiva se vuole durare dovrebbe alleggerrirli mi sembra che caruseggi e male.... Vedro' altri video un artista non si deve mai liquidare con superficialità.... In quest' aria non mi è piaciuto....
