Adequate vitamin D nutrition is associated with the prevention of rickets in children and therefore, little thought is given about the consequences of vitamin D deficiency in adults. However, it is now becoming clear that vitamin D plays an important role in maintaining bone health from birth until death. Of equal importance is that vitamin D has a multitude of other biologic functions in the body that may be important for the prevention of common cancers, hypertension, type-1 diabetes, as well as a host of other common maladies that afflict elders.
Michael F. Holick, Ph.D., M.D. is a Professor of Medicine, Physiology and Biophysics; Director of the General Clinical Research Unit; Director of the Bone Health Care Clinic and the Director of the Vitamin D, Skin and Bone Research Laboratory at Boston University Medical Center. Dr. Holick has made numerous contributions to the field of the biochemistry, physiology, metabolism, and photobiology of vitamin D for human nutrition.
Dr. Holick has established global recommendations advising sunlight exposure as an integral source of vitamin D. He has helped increase awareness in the pediatric and medical communities regarding vitamin D deficiency pandemic, and its role in causing not only metabolic bone disease, and osteoporosis in adults, but increasing risk of children and adults developing preeclampsia, common deadly cancers, schizophrenia, infectious diseases including TB and influenza, autoimmune diseases including type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis, type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease.
Dr. Holick is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition, and a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Association of Physicians. He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors and serves on a number of national committees and editorial boards and has organized and/or co-chaired several international symposia. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, and written more than 200 review articles, as well as numerous book chapters. He has acted as editor and/or co-editor on 10 books, and has written The UV Advantage, and The Vitamin D Solution.

Why is it that the medical profession is always struggling to keep up with the non-medical public when it comes to health building and disease prevention? The main reason is that health building and disease prevention cuts into their cash flow.

After 6 months of taking 6000 IU everyday,my level of vitamin D was at 53ng/ml(25 Hydroxy D),i've raise my intake to 11000 IU and after another 6 months my level was at 69 ng/ml(25 Hydroxy D),am now taking 20 000 IU everyday,i would like to reach a level between 80 and 90.The best way to have a idea how much to take is to get tested at least once to know were you are.Before starting taking my vitamin D supplement,i was eating fish 3 to 5 time per week,i was taking cod liver oil everyday,no fast food,don't drink,don't smoke,train everyday.I was shock to see that with my healthy life style + my 6000 IU per day i was only at 53 ng/ml

You should use vitamin d softgels without cod liver oil. The vitamin A may hinder the progression of your vitamin d synthesis if consumed too much.

What a wealth of info in just one lecture: 1 million IU will make one toxic but not 50.000 a week for 8 weeks. Bats were just fine with above 200 ng/ml. Holick is around 50 ng/ml and makes a good exemple for us all.

I've always admired your work, Dr. Holick. Thank you for being an educated voice for vitamin D. It is so crucial for my patients and so many are deficient. Not in agreement, though, with your evolutionary theories. I've studied so much physiology and I've can't deny intelligent design.

Oops at 24:25 - it is impossible to reduce anything by 400%. If something, e.g., need for primary C-section, is reduced by 100%, it means it is entirely eliminated. Dr. Holick should probably have said the need was reduced by 75%.

Can we use a vitamin d lamp? I keep seeing conflicting info on this. Some say tanning beds aren't safe because they use a magnetic ballast, is the the reason they're not safe? Or are any and all tanning lights unsafe? Thanks,

That totally depends on your location. The UK and many others use nMol/L as the scale of measurement, with an optimal range of 200-250 nMol/L. The US uses a scale of ng/ml with an optimal range of 80-100 ng/ml. The first cases of toxicity do not appear until those levels are over 500 nMol/L (UK) or 200 ng/ml (US)

moderation is the key and eating a healthy diet .I use Coconut oil as a sunscreen and I wear hat sun glasses and shirt in summer . In winter I use a sun lamp just like they use in mother Russia and I also take cod liver oil .Vitamin D from sunlight or UVB lamps increases testosterone in men. Makes you sleep better too .To keep your skin healthy young drink one glass of water with two citrus limes or lemons blend the limes or lemons in a blender with filtered water and drink the citrus juice every morning .Cholecalciferol, or activated vitamin D3, causes a life-threateningly high calcium and phosphorus level in the body, resulting in severe, acute kidney failure. ... Acute kidney failure develops 2-3 days after ingestion of this type of mouse and rat poison.

Where do you get this information? I think your must reading something that is absolutely not verified at all. People that need to get their vitamin D up are healthier and vitamin D is not going to increase your calcium...you will have to take calcium and or eat high foods with calcium in them. And what are those foods? Not much works to help get your calcium up.

That's because you cannot take D3 without taking K2. Vit K2 is essential for ushering calcium into the bones. Without it, you'll build up calcium plaques in the arteries and veins and be at a high risk for Afib, strokes, pulmonary embolisms and myocardial infarctions (heart attacks).
@GrkG63
@GrkG63 5 жыл бұрын
D3 will indeed increase calcium in the bloodstream, because it uses up your body's stores of K2. That is the only reason. But you must have K2 to move calcium out of the bloodstream and into the bones. D3 also uses up your stores of magnesium, as well, as it requires Mg+ to activate it in the bloodstream. Therefore, it's recommended to take 1000mcg of K2 (MK-7 form, as MK4 is not as strong) and 1200 mg Mg+ per 10,000IUs of D3
