The full episode of Michael Ignatieff's documentary when he entered Northern Ireland and explored the nature of what it is that the Loyalist Community in the North of Ireland holds dear to their hearts. Just a shame for them that we have a difference of opinion on their culture.

According to a dutch historian William of orange actually loathed parades and public festivities, in 1689 when the people welcomed him in England with a celebration many had oranges on top of sticks singing songs and shouting his praise, William instead of going through the crowd chose to find an alternative route around the screaming crowds.

papadoc711 Hard to imagine a culture of such rampant sectarianism being widely celebrated here in England, given how much we're known to sympathise with Republicanism.

I don’t want to be disrespectful to Ulster Protestants but I think the reason they have held on to such distinct identity was because Ulster Was surrounded by catholics. So both identities reinforced each other. Protestants, being a minority became defined by what it is not. It is Catholic, it is not Irish. But the republic has moved on and is no longer controlled by Catholicism. I hope Ulster Protestants can establish a modern identity that is not simply defined in opposition. People without a future, get stuck in the past.

Poverty and unemployment currently reinforces that seige mentality among working class unionists, as well as the fact their political representatives, the DUP, have completley failed to help them economically. And Brexit and the Covid lockdown just adds to the anxiety. With few options, people revert to focusing on their identity and just reinforce it more. It's sad. Former IRA volunteer and hunger striker Tommy McKearney has written a lot about the unionist community and one thing he points out that at the start of the Troubles, working class loyalists had real skin in the game in terms of remaining part of the UK and holding on to their share of the post-war economic pie. Then, after decades of fighting, the economic advantages they were fighting to protect were extinguished or sold off. If Irish unification is going to be a reality in our lifetime, this is an issue that has to be dealt with.

Ignatieff pronounces "Belfast" with the stress on the second syllable, which is something I've noticed a lot of Americans doing in recent years. What's the deal with that? Most of the residents of Belfast that I've seen interviewed pronounce the name of the city with a stress on the first syllable.

@Straight White British Protestant Lol, yet another example of the blatant stupidity of you Queen loving bellends. Plenty of Scots are of Irish ancestry, the term Scot refers to a Gaelic tribe, and your colours includes the entire spectrum of your DNA. Are you a Rangers fan by any chance? As an Englishman, let me tell you what I despise. The Empire. The Monarchy. The class system. All the pseudo-Scots pretending they have anything in common with me when we're clearly not anything alike. 😆
