I've been intimidated by this game for years. Bought it twice, love the whole mystique of it and it looks amazing, just haven't gone much further than Joppa yet. Maybe tonight, you've inspired me to try again =]

Really enjoyed this. And apparently it was perfect timing that I started playing Caves of Qud again this month! My friends and I have been competing for high scores and sharing tidbits of new information from each run. Learning games like this alone can feel overwhelming and reading the wiki just feels like cheating to me. Exploring asynchronously with friends seems to be the sweet spot for steady progression and uncovering secrets. I'm wondering whether it's possible to build the encouragement of small communities into the design of an RL. I'm imagining something like a seed that you only share with friends, one that makes large design decisions about your collective games, persistent across runs.

i actually love reading roguelike wikis. it's one way to experience the game, and /one day/ i'd like to integrate that into a game - discovering books in the world that tell you about the world. similarly it would need a seed that makes "design decisions", and having that shared with friends would be a neat twist.. but it's just such a huge project to design something on the scale where that gets interesting, let alone build a system to design such things for you and have them not be mush.
