Lord Patten Lecture on Social Renewal -- What Money Can't Buy: The Moral Limits of Markets Michael J Sandel, Harvard University
8th May 2013
In this talk Professor Sandel examines how market values have come to define our lives in ways that aren't good for democracy or the quality of public or private life. He asks whether market values have spread into spheres of life where they don't belong and if this is corrupting ourselves, our society and our environment. Among the issues discussed are whether we should pay children to do their homework or if it is ethical to pay people to test risky new drugs or to donate their organs.

Value and price: Economics, trade and efficiency drive markets although we should factor in Virtue Ethics, having moral judgments as a Civic duty. Mostly to reduce poverty and promote human dignity, the common good. Thank you very much for this discussion.

"emotionally troubling" lol that is the exact situation what i feel most of the ppl (including myself) will land in. Realizing or getting used to (regardless of whether we are agree to it or not) the reality that we do live in a world in which everything or even everyone has a price tag. we are too "busy" or lazy to give up such "efficient" way to operate or participate in the society. Yet the little needle called 'consciousness' will keep poking our heart, but the frequency decreases .....

Money should not become the obstacle to good medical aid for everyone, the same concerns an education. Jobs also should be opened for people according to their proffessional skills, not who you know or how much you could pay for a position. The majority in the world is not wealthy. So, we should be united and concistent in getting the basic services. People need basic accommodation to live in and safety which is the responsibility of the government. The problem is that many people are not prepared to work hard and to develop their skills. Bible sais that poor widows and orphans should be the number one concern. I would add single poor elderly and single poor people with disabilities. Anyway justice and integrity should be taught at schools and families. Wishful thinking, probably.

It’s interesting that some educated people feel so privileged that they don’t need to have compassion for or to help others less fortunate than they, and that they choose to sìmply send the problem of refugees elsewhere. How very sad.

What money do you talk about? Money that saves lives Or Money that makes time Or Money that buys material ??? Maybe the problem is your devaluation of money

Yes! Great point. Money is an exchange; we set the value. It is a choice.
