He originally wore it to hide his skin changing (it started on his hands, chest, and around his face like under his eyes) he covered everything else in makeup during the late 70s early 80s. And MJ had his own stylist who made his clothes. He didn't like normal clothes (T shirt and jeans) he liked costumes cause it made him feel like someone else.

He debuted the moonwalk on TV for the 1st time. And the performance went down in history. So this night was an updated recreation. This is why everyone went crazy for the jacket and hat. The glove was for his skin condition and ended up becoming his trademark. We all got a left handed sequin glove for Xmas as Kids. Everyone wanted a Billie Jean jacket but the one from the video and the jacket from the Thriller video. You were cool if you had the OFFICIAL jacket😎😂

He wore a white glove, white socks and white shirt with everything else black, because when dancing billie jean, you know, at the end when all lights are off except for the one spotlight on him, it cretes a visual illusion. I feel like you can't see it very well on video, but I can only imagine how amazing it would've been to see that live. His makeup artist said sometimes he wouldn't wear the glove, so instead he used white tape on his fingers. But yeah, it's for visual illusion, kind of like nowadays when artists or mostly their dancers have white lights on their costumes

They were simply to help the crowd see his feet and moves better. This is also why he typically wire pants for performance that had a contrasting stripe down the sides. He considered every little detail. Thus is also he never used music video directors but the best cinematic film directors of the time and still today. Scorsese . Spielberg . George Lucas. Starting with Thriller he never called his videos videos but rather short films. Then later they would always release a second short film which was the actual making of the video. Some videos took him up to 6 months in total. Never 2 or 3 days like ALL other artists.
