As much as he loved his family (especially his mother Katherine), Michael always considered the stage his true home. He said on many occasions that it was only during a performance that he found true peace - once it was over a lot of conflicting emotions just overwhelmed him.

the thing most people dont understand about this performance is, at this point Billie Jean was already at #1 .. He wasn't performing the song really ... So it wasn't about him singing it live or not .. He could've, if he wanted to .... His real intention was to show the whole world the new Michael Jackson, seperated himself from the Jacksons and focusing totally on his moves ... on that day MJ created "Michael Jackson - The King of Pop" ....

He was using playback for this specific song but this whole performance before billie jean he sang 100% live. Mj could definitely sing live tho you should check out some of his bad tour live performances, that tour was all done live and shows some incredible vocals and dancing, you can really see that he perfected his craft in those

@swacfan100 Жыл бұрын
Im 47 and I still remember this performance for the Motown 30th Celebration. The Moonwalk was created by a member of a dance team on Soul Train in the 70s. Though MJ didn't invent it, he gave it the name, in case you guys didn't know. This is also the 1st time he did it on tv. And He is lip singing here, but he can and have performed and sung at the same time.
@bethelmenil8786 Жыл бұрын
Yep, he supposed to sing this live but the band fail to do it perfectly so they decided to play the tape instead. Imagine if he sang this live with all that fresh energy. MJ still the King Of Pop.
@216Numbskull Жыл бұрын
@swacfan100, Nah, who told you a Soul Train dancer invented the "moonwalk" my friend? That dance move was coined by "Bill Bailey" long before Don Cornelius thought about creating Soul Train. Bailey's "moonwalk" dance move was influenced & evolved by other artists such as James Brown & Jackie Wilson. Those 2 are more so who MJ first tried to emulate the move. Knowing JB & Jackie Wilson were arguably Michael's 2 biggest influences as a kid. Just saying...🤘😜🤘 +Peace, Funk & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend+

According to an interview neither his choreographer or his crew knew he was as going to the moon walk let alone knew what it was which is what made it even more iconic.

It always amazes me the number of people who rave about how great MJ was at dancing but will mock boys for taking dancing lessons. Michael Jackson didn't just learn how to be a great dancer overnight. He had hundreds and hundreds of dance lessons.

Yeah, because it was a new track and it’s inclusion was a late addition to the show, the orchestra didn’t have time to learn it. It also meant Michael could focus on the ‘performance’ over the vocals as he knew what he was trying to achieve with it, and while he’s the greatest singer and can sing live amazingly, this particular performance wasn’t about that.
