The first time Michael listened to the complete Thriller album he cried because he thought it sounded horrible. The record company had been applying pressure for him to get it out by a certain date and everything became too rushed, the end product was messy. Michael ended up putting his foot down like he knew how, and they went back in the studio and remixed everything until it became the prized piece of history it is.

Yes, they took a day off and came back and mixed it one song per day. The problem was that Billie Jean was originally too long, making the grooves on the record thinner, which affects the playback sound. By making the runtime shorter, the grooves got wider and this improved the bass sound.

I am obsessed with these videos. I know nothing about the technical aspects of music but since I was a kid, I have always listened to MJ with headphones/earphones because I love the nuances to his voice, the music, everything. I love the details and these types of videos open it all up so we can see how he wrote music using his unique vocal abilities, how he arranged music, and then how it all comes together. This is like Christmas for me! Thank you so much for doing these videos!

I don't know anything about music theory, but for some reason, you can hear Michael Jackson's unique vocal abilities, how his voice shifts, how he breathed out the words as he sang, his high and bright voice self-harmony,' 'self-backing vocals,' 'self-dubbing,' or 'self-overdubbing.' It is the process of adding multiple layers of one's own voice

Chris love your work! Great niche that I really am happy I stumbled upon. I’m a music producer but often want to make vocal parts for my compositions in the voice of a type of singer. I want to be able to compile a list of singers vocal attributes and mix and match them, like The gravelly texture to a gospel singer but the sound and pronunciations of Yuki Nagano. I want to know how to study voices, what makes them how they are, create profiles on them, and then use them as basis to be inspired & even create fusion. for certain songs. Is this something you teach? Your Thom Yorke video was so impressive but I wouldn’t know how to think of the witch for a good reference. That knowledge you have was excellent man I’d love to learn how to do that!

I saw in a documentary that around the time MJ recorded Off the Wall he was really into African percussion. So.... trying to use his voice in a sort of percussive way.... makes total sense to me.
@BubblesBear17 Жыл бұрын
Something I really love about Michael's use of his vocals is simply that he really tends to use them as an instrument and not just sing lines. Like what you guys mentioned with almost adding to the percussion and such. He doesn't stick to the lines of singing. He rather tends to explore what vocals can do and then use that to his advantage in the song. His vocals aren't just vocals in a song. His vocals itsself are simply an actual instrument to the song. The way he approaches making music this way is something I've rarely ever seen. Freddie Mercury seems to do it similarly, but in his own way of course. You can learn so much from listening to these types of tracks or seeing their process of making songs. I love it

This is so cool. I know one KZbinr (who is not English speaking) who condemned doing comps and whatnot by saying "everything needs to be recorded in one take" and whatnot. But then you hear MJ who was a master of his craft doing the comping because it served better to the final outcome... and I am thinking that if someone of his calibre did it why can't us mere mortals do it? I think making a great recording and immortalising a song is an art form of itself. Especially when one as a singer explores a song and one take has something that the other take is missing it's criminal not to use those special bit and pieces. It's really cool to have a closer look at Michaels process. I wish we got to hear more of those alternative takes.
@chrisliepe4 ай бұрын
Comping is also a great way to learn about your voice and what it's capable of so you can improve your 'one takes'. I think clinging to only doing one takes cheats vocalists out of discovering all the possibilities in their voice!

It's from a rework I made a few years back because someone requested it (there was no session available with drums and bass separated at the time). I posted it on Reddit for people to play with, few days later it was all over the internet, without the information that it is not real. I actually recognize my own file naming system in the tracks haha :). A few months later a session with the real original drums and bass leaked out. You can probably find that one as well. Btw I’d rather you do these sessions alone simply cause this is our first time hearing these Multitrack’s and others may not be as well versed into MJ’s amazing/unmatched incomparable vocal ability & discography as you are😇🙌🏽👑💖🔥💫(I love “Human Nature” cause the song is so spacey and In retrospect, it can be viewed as a sad song, however: The anticipation that MJ sings about with such relish - of breaking out, hitting the streets, connecting with strangers - was a pleasure that was denied from him during his childhood/lifetime,in large degree because of the unprecedented fame and fanfare generated by the success of Thriller.)

Stitched together makes sense because there’s a video out there of MJ in the studio listening to dozens of clips of each line, line by line, writing in his notebook as Bruce Swedien is replaying each one, one by one. MJ tells Bruce which ones make the shortlist. Quincy is off to the side. At one point he tells Bruce “let’s keep 23, 42, 43 and 48……” So….he recorded that many takes t8me and again, then they stitched together the best of each line. Painstaking. I’ve never heard of anyone crafting and re crafting their vocals this much. 110%
