Digitised master footage of Michael Jackson in Scramble Training, a 1993 interactive ridefilm for the AS-1 motion ride simulator developed by Sega.
Thought to be lost even by Sega personnel themselves, the above footage - all localised segments made by writer/director Hiroshi Uemura and Kenji Sasaki, as well as filmed scenes of Jackson - was recently found on a D2 master tape sold at a car boot sale in the United Kingdom, and kindly digitised by the Oxford Duplication Centre after an appeal on Facebook was answered by ‪@Mechafatnick‬ .
Read more about it here:
www.gamingalex...
www.forbes.com...
Timestamps for all sequences:
Introduction - 00:35
Takeoff #1 - 02:40
Takeoff #2 - 03:35
Ending #1 - 08:10
Ending #2 - 09:40
Ending #3 - 11:10
An extended, uncompressed cut of the full master tape can be found on the Internet Archive thanks to Gaming Alexandria, with extra Japanese version footage and sound test:
archive.org/de...
Though this tape represents the first known preservation of the main video contents of the title, ROMs for its gameplay elements, motion data, and an introductory film especially filmed by Jackson remain unarchived. If any of these rare items are possessed by you - or even an AS-1 simulator itself - please do get in touch below!

This is an amazing find, and even more amazing that it's finally been preserved online. Having footage of Michal Jackson at the peak of his popularity, in a videogame no less, is something special. Many thanks to everyone involved in making this happen! I agree, the full intro video for the simulator should be found, so this ride/game can be properly documented and experienced!

@@arkvinin Nirvana would probably disagree. They were big fans of Jackson and even wore t-shirts of him at some of their performances. They even spoke about the allegations when asked what they thought about it and Kurt said he felt sorry for Mike. Ironically the surviving members of Nirvana were also the target of a scam falsely claiming child abuse. The kid from the Nevermind cover tried to say that everyone who owned that album was in the possession of child pornography and that it had ruined his life. When in reality that guy (who has recreated the cover multiple times as he's aged, and has the album name TATTOOED on his chest) had been milking that fame for years for money and girls and such. And was now just broke and trying to sue them for a ton of money he didn't deserve. Same as Jackson's accusers. Particularly Wade Robson who only started his claim in 2013 after previously being rejected for the big money job producing Michael Jackson ONE for Cirque Du Soleil. Why on earth would he want that job if he now says he was abused (and that he was 'forced' to testify in 2005 as the main witness for defense even though Jackson had hundreds of people volunteering... and Wade is shown in 2007 video at Neverland with his now wife, praising the place calling it a 'sacred land' and thanking Jackson, who isn't even there cos Neverland was always open to visitors whether Jackson was present or not).

@@ChokeslamToHell Are you serious, did you even check that Thriller sold over 70 million copies before posting. Michael Jackson was on the way down fast in 1992, I was born in 1975 so I don't need to google to remember. The year after the accusations and quick payoff to quiet the victim appeared, his name was tainted forever.

Graphics are on par for the time period. These would be the pre-rendered backgrounds. Sega CD could do that. (Silpheed is an example of this. Explosions, missles, and lasers would all be displayed over it.) The tech actually goes back to the Colecovision though the console never used it. ViewMaster Interactive was one of the first, displaying game data over video tape.

This is just done via prerendering/offline rendering. Not really that great considering what others did at the same time with that technology. However, ut does the job as a short ride movie that people forget 5 minutes after leaving.

I rode this in Las Vegas at the Sega arcade in the Luxor. For some reason I don't remember Michael Jackson but I was young then and lots of stuff back then had mj in it. I remember we crashed the ship at the end. When the landing happens, there were guidelines for the riders to follow by hitting their triggers to adjust approach. 8 of us climbed into a lil moving pod, similar to Star Tours. I remember that crash landing really sticking with me.

I rode this at the Trocadero in the 90s. Just for context, from 7:46 to 8:12 the cabinet would switch to a wireframe view of the ship rendered at runtime. The designated driver would then pilot the ship, I think through a number of rings or gates. I can't remember if the players actions would actually drive the motion simulation too or not though. On my ride, we got ending 1 at 8:10. - We also rode the non-interactive 'Megalopolis' film.

So the footage was found in the UK in a car boot sale. However I bet Sega already has this, who said that Sega lost it and didn't have it themselves? Sega themselves never claimed this, it was only kids online on reddit and such that claimed this, companies don't just release random stuff like this often, so they likely still have it themselves.

This was a pack in demo for the cancelled Sega Giga Edge. It also came with a signed copy of authenticity by Micheal Jackson. If you returned the slip to Sega's headquarters and were one of the first ten people to do so Micheal Jackson would come over to your house and play Sega branded video games with you for the evening. He was even gonna bring a trailer full of the current Sega arcade titles for you to play like Virtua Racing. Too bad this system was cancelled at the last minute because of infighting between Sega of Japan and Sega of America. Instead we got the 32x add on a year later.
