Looks like he was 10 when the Jackson 5 were signed to Motown - their first performance together was in 1964 when he was 6. The point the Jock was making wasn't to excuse any shenanigans as you say, but moreso the point that mega-fame at an early age (and fame that continued up until his passing) tends to stunt the natural maturing process that normal people go through.
