This is my favorite Michael Jackson song! The drums, the synths, the fact that he was singing about a Liberian girl and not some top model. The song itself is vivid. The music has a tribal sound to it. It’s not true but I would like to imagine Michael was on trip to visit Africa, Liberia specifically, had an amazing time and met the a girl that stole his heart

MJ apparently hated this version , he wanted it in a different light , it was originally called Pyramid Girl. Written and recorded in 1983 well before the changed lyrics. He had this song in his head since the late 70s and when he did come up with it , he was told it was not going to be a success. The stripped down version is so so different , the words are different and his voice is so much clearer and distinct, liberian girl ended up as a filler on the BAD album which is a shame because it is a nice song but so over layered there was no way he could have sung this live.
