just a few notes for anyone who cares: * I had a section dedicated to “Just Good Friends” with Stevie Wonder but seeing as the original version of my script had ballooned to well over an hour, I cut it. But this is me acknowledging it. I didn’t have that much to say about it but it’s a great song and legendary collab. * I also cut a section going over Michael’s vitiligo. Aside from trying to shorten the video a bit, I just didn’t like the tonal shift in the script where I had that section placed. But concisely, during the period this video covers, Michael’s vitiligo had become obvious to the public, he looked drastically different from Thriller to Bad. My main point is that it was ultimately out of his control and had nothing to do with him wanting to alter his appearance or whatnot. * It means the world to me if you even watched a fraction of this video so thank you. I hope you feel the love and admiration I have for Michael through it. Stay blessed and beautiful. With love, Wayne. P.S. my numbers are way off as far as Thriller is concerned. It’s sales WW are actually 122 MILLION. My mistake. ✨

Imagine you’re Michael Jackson in 1984. From humble origins in Gary, Indiana, you’ve become Black music royalty. Your record-breaking ‘Off the Wall’ album has four Billboard Top 10 hits, two of which were #1. Then, ‘Thriller’ fulfills your boyhood dream of making the biggest album ever. All before your 26th birthday. Now, the world is in the palm of your sparkling, gloved hand. Do you retire and become a bankable Vegas act? Or do you take a leap of faith and show the world you can do more? Many came to see the spectacle. More came to see him fail, and most left blown away. How do you follow up the biggest album ever? You don’t; you move forward. By his mid-20s, Michael Jackson’s only competition was the man in the mirror. People can nitpick his looks and mock his soft-spoken voice. People can criticize his childlike behavior and start comparing album sales. But never before had we seen a superstar like MJ. It’s one thing to have God-given talent; it’s another to have a constant yearning to be the best you can be. Michael Jackson had both, and he delivered every last drop on ‘Bad.’ Go ahead and rank that!

You don't think that say, Prince...provided Michael with a little bit of competition (to put it mildly)...considering the extent of Prince's talent and what he could do?
@chrislacy1990Ай бұрын
@@reliableandrew *Short answer:* Yes and no. *Longer answer:* Michael Jackson’s fiercest rival was none other than himself. With his unprecedented level of fame, anticipation for the ‘Bad’ album was at a fever pitch. It didn’t have the element of surprise like ‘Thriller’ did. That said, Prince was the most complete musician of his era, especially with his 1987 magnum opus, ‘Sign O’ the Times.’ My guy was a cheat code: - Produce, arrange, compose, and perform? ✅ - Master many instruments? ✅ - Build a mythical aura? ✅ - Sell millions of albums? ✅ - Send fans into ecstasy, critics into raptures, and his peers back to the drawing board? ✅

I hated the BAD era. He was no longer "our" Michael. The strange leather/buckles/zippers look, the bleached skin, the nose surgeries, and the increasing tabloid weirdness that HE admitted to creating. This is when we lost MJ. Also, I'm gonna say what everyone else doesn't want to say- there was something a little "demonic" about the BAD album.
@reliableandrewАй бұрын
@@juniorjames7076 Are you sure he was 'your' Michael in the first place? You're coming across as someone who's pretending to like him, but who really doesn't and is (very) comfortable demeaning him. Might wonder what your perception of 'demonic' is, related to the album if there's any substance to that characterisation beyond you just not liking it. Anyway, for everyone else who has more reasoned and balanced critiques of Michael during this era; the issue around his appearance was that yes, it was somewhat jarring and he didn't explain...not until the Oprah interview...Michael allowed the speculation / conjecture which he could've addressed, but maybe he simply didn't want to. Thought the BAD outfit was pretty cool myself.

@LonglostpussАй бұрын
Unfortunately it wasn't, it was probably his weakest album, it didn't even make half of Thriller's sales. Off The Wall was Michael's best album, artistically, even though it wasn't all his own work and didn't get the same commercial exposure as his later albums would. Bad's sound was all over the place, the album sounded like it had an identity crisis and the album was largely saved by the music videos and the release of Moonwalker. Critically, it wasn't met with the same acclaim as Michael's previous albums and even lost him a huge chunk of his fanbase, mainly his black ones. Off The Wall and Thriller were Michael's best period, mainly because physically, despite having a couple of procedures, he was still recognisable to a vast majority of his fanbase. Bad was almost a reflection and manifestation of Michael's drastic physical change and conflicts, which started a process of alienating some of his fans unnecessarily - he didn't need to change, that's the thing. Coincidentally, most of the key songs on the Bad tour performed weren't even from the album, they were a mish mash of The Jacksons, Off The Wall and Thriller tracks, with a few Bad tracks thrown in there. That's pretty telling.

If you keep doing your research you will also note that MJ had at two Jehovah's Witnesses following him on the Victory Tour to ensure he didn't break their rules. It must have been so tough for MJ to go from a confident quiet little genius singer to a teenager who was unsure of his changing voice and looks including very very bad acne, Jermaine leaving the brothers, Motown not giving them the freedom they needed to create, all of his J5 brothers getting married, his father having a child out of wedlock with another woman... all this with his hormones raging and trying to please his family, his church and himself must have been so tiring and confusing. Not to mention starting over with Randy in the Jacksons in another music company to see if they could make it from being a child act into an adult act. Shit must have been hard for MJ back then especially since he was so desperate to be the best. The man was something; he made my life happy as a kid growing up in the 80s, and I miss him a lot.

Great video friend!! To think that Whitney was still very unknown & new at the time of “We Are The World”. I always imagined if the song came out in the 90’s with artist like Whitney, Boyz 2 Men, Celine, Mariah, Toni, SWV, Luther & Micheal Bolton; whew they would’ve took us to church 😂

I think Michael did surpass thriller maybe not sells wise but in terms of his creativity and pushing the envelope further to his brand. he showed how well rounded of a entertainer he was making a hit movie, video game, and having possibly the greatest solo tour of all time all in just one era. He showed that he was more than a musical artist who made just exceptional music. he really solidified himself as a unstoppable entity in this era with the icing on the cake being Elizabeth Taylor officially naming him The King Of Pop In 1989 🌎🤘🤘💯

The song - 'There must be more to life than this' , is a Freddie mercury / michael jackson duet and it appears officially released on the 2014 album 'Queen Forever' ✌🏽

The time between the release of Thriller & Bad was 5 years! If he was around now they would've criticized him for taking that long! Streaming has ruined the way people consume music big time!

Bad album was in fact better than Thriller to me. I always thought this. It just didn't sell as well, but musically, I think he took his artistic boundaries beyond what he did on Thriller and vocally went further as well.

I wish after Thriller he didn't continue chasing commercial success and instead just focused on expressing himself through music. I feel like this pursuit of numbers stofled his creativity.

Thriller hat billie jean and beat it. But on bad, almost every song was a hit. I think depending on the tracklist you get, bad is way better than thriller

Thriller is the best selling album. However, Bad has always been my favourite. The syncopation, energy and grooves made Bad number 1 for me. The fact that he tried to top himself is astronomical. Long live the King of Pop!!

For me Bad is THE perfect album. I like every song on that album. What is so amazing is that not only his looks where different in that era but also the way he used his voice. The sound of his voice is so different than on the Thriller album and Off the Wall album.
