Michael Jackson's music and image were inescapable back then. I think you summed up the appeal of this game absolutely perfectly. It was truly impressive playing this game when it was new.

Just like your profile pic demonstrates the late 80s early 90s were that moment before everything kind of went to crap. This game somehow perfectly encapsulates that that time when people were either naive or ignorant or something and you could just enjoy a thing for what it was. something that's gotten damn near impossible in this day and age.

That 89-91 Genesis lineup gives me so much nostalgia for some reason. You had pop culture’s biggest names in sports and entertainment like Michael Jackson, Evander Holyfield, Joe Montana on the covers of the games and you had the closest thing to arcade perfect quality gaming with games like Truxton, Ghouls N Ghosts and Strider. It just represented such a wonderful time period not only in gaming but in childhood. Its hard to explain to those who weren’t around how much of a special time period that was.

@mrbig26484 жыл бұрын
I have the same feeling. I think a big reason why I have a special nostalgia for that early pre-Sonic Megadrive period is because the console still felt very "next gen" at that time (this was before the release of the SNES after all). People forget that the console was competing with the NES for 2 years before the SNES arrived. It was a very exciting time. I love those early Megadrive games (Mystic Defender, Forgotten Worlds, Sword of Vermillion etc)

This was by far the best game to do Music and Sound menu check, which was a relatively new novelty in the 16-bit era. All the "HOO!" "WOO!" "Michael!" in the SFX, and then... my god.. all those bad ass Quincey Jones/MJ compositions squeezed through the purity of a six channel Yamaha YM2612. When I first heard it, it let me appreciate the music striped from the image and MJ himself (both were in decline at the time). Now, its both an authentic example of his output of the time, and also weirdly striped of his presence... which is probably a good place to be.

Man I look at this game so differently than I did back in the early 90’s. It was one of those games I thought would be just like the arcade version which I loved. I love this version a lot more today than I did back then and enjoy playing it. It definitely has a nice challenge to it. While it is different than the arcade it still has a “quarter muncher” kind of experience. I wish they were able to re-release both this and it’s arcade counterpart in a collection however we all know that unfortunately would most likely never be possible. Whatever the case is this is a game that should never be lost to time regardless of how it is preserved. It’s a legend of its time for the the fact they were able to capture MJ in pixel form during the highlight of his life.

I too am a hard rock/metal guy but being a child of the 80s I can't help but love Jackson's music from that time period. Looking back it's crazy how he went from being THE biggest thing imaginable and loved by all and considered a true artist and musical genius to being loathed and considered the walking definition of creepy in such a short span of time. I wish nothing negative had happened (I'm undecided on whether or not he did anything but the controversy forever tarnished him) and he hadn't died and was still well respected like he was in the 80s. I wouldn't put it past him, if he were still alive, just for fun to put up a KZbin video of him lets playing this very game while giving behind the scenes stories of it's development from his perspective. In a better timeline that's how people are dealing with the lock downs.

Although I do love your videos which feature themes of many games, Im liking this more. This game reminds me of the magic of the early days of the Mega Drive. Back then, it was featured heavily in TV and magazine ads as well as on the back of the poster included with each game. I remember looking at it and really wanting it, but I think each time I had the chance to buy a new game something newer came along. Renting games wasn't common here in the UK, and you had to make do with the 1-2 new games a year you got, if you're lucky. Level 3 is gorgeous. This is so much better than Kid Chameleon and ... very significant in the Megadrive's lifespan. Why is it always brushed off? Well of course, Jacko is no longer a thing anymore and admittedly the mechanic is repetitive butstill there are plenty of details that makes this game special. Of course, it belongs to the Top 15 Megadrive games. You're very right about the nostalgia factor. This Megadrive game is another part of us.

This is a really good game! I always have alot of fun playing it and yes the music sounds quite good through FM audio, but i'm certainly not a fan of Michael Jackson and as much as I love this game, I have no connection or sympathy for the protagonist and I never wanted him to succeed after seeing too much info on what he did to little boys. I would love for somebody to hack this game and put a different protagonist in there completely ignoring the Michael Jackson licence, maybe port Ronald McDonald over seeing as he sprayed enemies with pixie dust too. Great review as always man and I respect yours and everybody else's opinions, it's just how I feel about this game and MJ. Love the game, loathe the protagonist.

@DeludedOne4 жыл бұрын
This game is actually more fun than it looks especially once you figure out some of the quirks and little details that you can goof around with. I always liked trying to knock enemies down, especially into holes and such for amusement, or try killing them with stalactites and falling laser guns. I don't know what the crotch grab does apart from making Michael look....well Michael, but the Moonwalk isn't totally useless (and it took me a while to figure out that it was even a thing, hold B and then move around). On the 3rd level, the stages of the Cemetery, moonwalking across a bridge will actually destroy it piece by piece. This doesn't have too much of an effect overall since there are only so many bridges in that level, but it actually makes a huge difference to the boss fight in 3-1, where you have to fight Zombies while under a bridge. They come from both ends of the screen on the bridge itself and below it. I found it much easier to destroy the bridge beforehand as it makes all the zombies drop down to the lower level and makes it much easier to handle all of them. Moonwalking will also allow you to traverse the conveyor belts in level 5 without any pushback (or push forward) at all. How cool is that!? (EDIT: Just remembered something, the crotch grab does have something of a use, use it while on a conveyor belt and it won't move you around at all. Of course you can't move either while holding that pose, but yeah.) The "shooting stars" don't simply appear randomly. There's one on each stage beginning from the 2nd level ( I don't think there are any on the first level). You have to rescue a particular child first on that stage for it to appear, and it always appears flying diagonally down from a specific and static location. If you recuse any other child first on that level, it won't appear, simple as that. Finally, there's a weird glitch that you can trigger on the 5th level. Normally pressing up on the D-pad will cause Michael to hold his crotch if you aren't standing in front of anything interactable. However on the 5th level you can open doors by pressing up on the control box beside them and Michael will do a spinning animation where he moves slightly to the side. If you keep rapidly pressing up on the D-Pad however, Michael will perform the spinning animation repeatedly, and you will do it by default anytime you press up, even if you are not in front of anything interactable. You can literally spin him across the map by pressing up nonstop. You can cancel this glitch by opening a door again normally. This alone is odd enough, but there's an even more bizarre glitch that stems from this. Trigger the above glitch, then try to use one of the teleport pads on the level (that you normally can do by pressing up). Michael will perform the spinning animation on the teleport pad, the animation and sound will play for the teleport pad and Michael will....vanish. He basically becomes invisible and you can still see the magic dust he spews when attacking to pinpoint his location. The positioning also gets bugged as sometimes Michael, while invisible, will slide crazily around the screen. You can also jump WAY further occasionally when invisible, sometimes multiple screens. You can still rescue children and defeat enemies and get hurt while invisible too. To undo this glitch, simply stand on top of a teleport pad and press up. The pad will trigger and Michael will reappear, sometimes this also teleports him to a random location that has no teleport pad.

Did you know that the song "Thriller" was supposed to be played during the Graveyard stage? There are snippets of it during the dance attacks, but the entire song was going to be the stage's background music. Unfortunately, SEGA were unable to acquire the licensing rights to the song & had to replace it w/"Another Part of Me". However, there's a beta version of the Moonwalker ROM that still features "Thriller".

Being the huge nerd that I am, I always heard the Weird Al renditions of Beat It and Bad in my head when I played this game.

I had this as well and totally agree, it was one of those games you were too cool for yet somehow it was crowd pleaser for the Genesis, considering it was early software

I had the master system back when it was released, and remember the excitement around it's release! We had to make reservation prior to be able to rent this cartridge back in the day. It really was fun and exciting as a kid. I've got to play these games again. I also like the arcade game, and I wish that made a port to the genesis.

No love for the master system port? I absolutely love that version.

You mean the one where he rescues what look like kids from what look like the cops? I loved that as a skid.

I used to play this game all the time. Never beat it (lul) but it was just fun hearing the music and playing as Michael Jackson.

I for one would love to see a fan game of Moonwalker, where they make things less repetitive, add more enemy variety & better stage layouts.

Small correction.....MJ was not one of the most popular artists in the world....he was the most famous/popular artist/person in the world

Great work on the review, SLX. Here's hoping you were able to comb through it during editing fine enough for it to avoid having it flagged for the music. 🙏

It's not even that difficult. Just download the software and plug the mini into your computer. I learned how because of a five, six minute video.

A remake of this game with more elements from the movie like the Speed Demon claymation rabbit motorcycle chase seen would've been crazy. Either way, this was a classic for me.

I literally just beat the game tonight. I played it a ton in the 90s and love it still. I remember getting to the final battle but could not remember if I had beaten it back then so I had to make sure I did it lol

I guess this game makes more sense for those who grew up in the 80s like me. I got for my birthday a walkman and a Thriller cassette tape. Simpler times... I kinda miss that early Genesis era.

The MJ era was quite the era indeed. I was terrible at this game but I guess I can count that on youth. Good review as always.

This was either the first or second game I purchased, and the only one I returned (a few hours later), just did not enjoy it, and fortunately found a sympathetic sales assistant as it was hard to return games back then. Enjoyed the in depth look though.

I love Moonwalking though this game!, and the music will keep you humming all the way through.
