Freddie did more with his voice. Michael surprisingly, was not such a high tenor. His voice is very bright therefore people think he is singing higher then what he is actually singing. Freddie was the opposite, his voice was rich and dark, especially during the 80’s, therefore it sometimes didn’t sound as if he was singing as high as he was singing. With Michael’s light timbre you would expect him to be able to sing very high in his chest voice, but that wasn’t the case. He sang up to G5 in his chest voice, that is quite respectable, but there are certainly higher tenors, such as Steve Perry for example. Freddie with his darker and heavier voice was able to sing up to F#5 in his chest voice. That is just a semitone behind Michael. You would expect a bigger difference judging from their tone. There was a big difference in their falsettos. Freddie had a far more developed falsetto then Micheal. This should not be such a big surprise, generally deeper and lower voices does tend to have better falsettos then light tenors. The only thing Michael ever did with his falsetto was all of the scat sounds, such as the ‘hee hee’ sound. From what I ve seen from Michael’s falsetto he wouldn’t be able to do something such the glissando from A4 - A5 in Under Pressure. That is also why Freddie has a higher vocal range then Micheal, his falsetto was much better. But obviously Michael has also done some very impressive things, in Dirty Diana he repeats the phrase Dirty Diana in his G5 chest voice. It is impressive that he could sing the words in chest voice at such a high pitch. It is useless to discuss their lower notes, Michael didn’t have much resonance in his lower register, but his lower notes did improve a bit with age. He actually used quite a lot of lower notes on his last album. Many people believe Freddie was a baritone because he was good at lower notes. Or they believe he was such a good singer that he could sing powerful high notes with a lot resonance as a baritone. Freddie was tenor, he was lower or a dramatic tenor but he was still a tenor. His voice was to sharp and agile for a baritone. Both singers had some variety in their voices. Unlike many other pop artists Michael could sing with some distortion as well. Both of them had very pure voices at a younger age. However, I believe Freddie was able to do more with his voice then Michael. Freddie was a more serious musician then Michael. Michael liked exploring and expanding the entertainment factor of his performances, he also enjoyed making films. Everything was planned out perfectly, whereas Freddie was completely spontaneous. But that is also somewhat the philosophical differences between rock and pop. Pop is more about entertainment, whereas rock is more about raw emotion. Michael did his whole History tour with lip syncing, that would be completely unacceptable to a rock audience or a rock artist. Both of them had experienced some vocal issues, although not to bad, and generally their voices held up much better against 95% of singers within popular culture. These two are massive legends, most up and coming singers will try to mimic one or both of these singers. They have had a massive influence on music in the past 40 years. They also had an interesting relationship and influence on each other. Michael influenced Queen to release Another One Bites The Dust, which became one of their best selling singles. In turn Michael was influenced by Queen’s slick fusion of funk, rock and pop. He adopted this similar style for his thriller album.

As a vocalist myself I sing very high higher than most guys, and I'mma tell you Michael Jackson sings very high it's not because of the brightness of his voice, his voice sits about an active or two higher than mine. Michael Jackson is sharp, singing at a high level and holding on that spot constantly in with his vocals. He has dynamics and can fire up so suddenly to a level which can't be mirrored by any singer. He has his uniqueness which can't be reused. Freddy is overall very godly but he can't be what MJ is and also in MJ can't go low as him. For me it's clearly 1. MJ because of his uniqueness and peak of high-level and than at 2. FM

@@yadad7256 Higher register of what? He could go a semitone higher in his chest voice, that is not a massive difference. White Freddie had a much better falsetto then Michael, which is why he overall has a biggest vocal range. Michael's voice sounds very high. He was more of regular Lyric Tenor. Freddie was more of a spinto or dramatic tenor, they have heavier voice that often sounds lower. Someone like Steve Perry was a higher tenor then both Freddie or Michael.

Of course Freddie is the greatest vocalist to walk on this planet, But still Michael could defeat Freddie in terms of versatility and even in low notes, No offence, Freddie did had a powerful dynamo in his vocal chords, His powerful singing ability and such a powerful control of his voice on high notes can literally shatter other artists talent, but still that doesn't mean that MJ wasn't that talented that he shouldn't be compared with Freddie.

*Michael Jackson has a better voice than Freddie Mercury.* I've watched Live Aid twice. I've seen the Radio Ga Ga performance, the vocal improvisations, the entire stadium of fans chanting along. I do understand that Mercury is widely renowned as having one of the greatest voices in rock music. Maybe there's just something wrong with my ears. Maybe I have zero music taste. I've listened to plenty of his records. Night At The Opera, News Of The World, The Game. While I do appreciate some of his songs, his catalogue is only catered to one specific music taste. You really need to be a fan of rock or opera music to really appreciate his voice. But to me, there's something really obnoxious about it. Again, my music taste may be absolute garbage. I have no clue. He just doesn't have the diversity in his voice that I look for in a great singer. His voice doesn't cross genres in any significant way. At the end of the day, he's a rock artist. He has great power in his voice, can hit insane notes, and has a unique control over his voice, but he just doesn't come close to Jackson, because Jackson can do all of those things and more. Michael Jackson has one of the most versatile, unique, and recognizable voices in the history of popular music. He perfected literally every aspect of it. Jackson is the only artist I have ever witnessed singing under complete physical exhaustion. To dance, and sing as beautifully as he did simultaneously is a fucking skill. His breath control has to be out of this world. Mercury simply doesn't have enough talent to do this. Check out Wembley '88, and Japan '87. I understand Mercury had a very powerful rock voice, but is it the best voice in music like many music snobs like to claim? Absolutely not. It isn't even superior to Jackson's voice. Look at Mercury's entire catalogue of music. They're all essentially rock classics. His voice is only equipped for this genre. Now look at Jackson's catalogue. It encompasses the entire spectrum of popular music. This is because Jackson's voice is a lot more versatile, a lot more capable of transcending different genres of music, from Disco, to funk, soul, R&B, pop, Hip-Hop, and Rock. Could you honestly imagine Freddie Mercury singing timeless pieces like Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, or Rock With You, or Wanna Be Startin' Something with as much rhythm, soul and melody as Jackson did? Fuck no. He just doesn't have the voice for it. Could you imagine Freddie Mercury's voice on a hip hop track? Fuck no. Michael Jackson's voice is far more capable, and you can bet your sweet ass that he could absolutely demolish songs like We Will Rock You and Another One Bites The Dust. If you don't believe he has the grit and power, listen to songs like Beat It, Dirty Diana, Give In To Me, State of Shock, and his cover for The Beatles' Come Together. Now go listen to him singing Who's Lovin You as an 11 year old child. The soul, the passion, the rhythm, the melody. This is something I seldom hear expressed in Mercury's voice. At least not to the extent of Jackson's voice. I'm not trying to snub Freddie Mercury. He's one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time, objectively. But he is severely overrated, and I cannot stand people whose heads are shoved so far up classical rock music's ass, who call him the absolute best in music. That is my unpopular opinion. But to each their own, I suppose. *TLDR: Jackson's voice is far more versatile, transcendent and unique than Mercury's voice. Mercury has a great rock/opera voice, but Jackson's voice is more capable and perfected in every way. In some cases, I would even argue that an 11 year old Michael Jackson could out-sing an adult Freddie Mercury, especially under physically exhausting (on-stage) conditions.*

Yeah, I totally understand you. Like you, I can appreciate Michael Jackson's voice- there is no doubt he was talented man, however as you find something obnoxious about Freddie Mercury's voice, I can say the same just the other way around. I dont know. For a long period of time I coundn't pin point on what it was, but now I believe that I dont like the fact that MJ's voice for me is somehow "hysterical" while Freddies voice relaxes me and/or awakens deep emotion. I guess it depends on what kind of person you are...
