Jordan didn't guard Pierce until the 4th quarter, but totally shut him down when he did start checking him in their first regular season meeting. Pierce had 2 points on 1/6 FG in the 4th quarter, and 0 points in the last 10 minutes, with all of those shot attempts coming against Jordan. Jordan also forced him into 2 turnovers in the quarter
articles.baltimoresun.com/2001...
Unfortunately for the Wizards, Antoine Walker couldn't be stopped (31-10-9) and the Celtics pulled off the win. Pierce averaged 26-7-3 on 44% in 2001/02, the 2nd highest scoring mark of his career, and was 3rd in the league in ppg behind Iverson and Shaq

Wow prime MJ probably could have won multiple DPOY in the modern era especially with less defensive big men for competition like Hakeem Robinson Mutombo Rodman Eaton Alonzo etc. Even at 38 the Wizards were an elite defense before his injury and poor after his injury, and he shut down many star players like Vince Carter, Paul Pierce, Stojakovic, Marion, and Sprewell.

+John Daniels Yes and it's physically and mentality less exhausting in this era. And also back then extra time-out calls from referees were very rare, in today's NBA it's so common for a referee to review everything they're not sure about to finalize a call regarding a play. The game would have been so much easier for MJ if he was in his prime playing today. He would also be able to focus more on other areas of the game since there is a lack of proper big men. Can you imagine if a guy like Bird played today, who averaged 10rpg for his career playing among the timbers every single game. Those Celtic's rosters over the course of his rather short career had a longer list of proper big men than the whole league has to offer today! No doubt many great legends would have way crazier stats if they played today especially for a team that doesn't restrict them much. Although there's also the likelyhood of these legends playing fewer minutes today due to getting more blow-out wins due to their domination.

+Jun Hee Hoyup that's why MJ at age 38 with broken ribs and tendinitis in both knees averaged 25-6-5 before his knee injury for 46 games in the 2001/02 season - even though the league averages across the board were at an all-time low. only Tracy McGrady finished the season with 25-6-5 - and that was in a still tougher defensive era than the modern league after his knee injury they lost 9/10 games and fell out the playoff picture, and his averages plummeted

yeah for sure. big men like mutombo and hakeem gobbled up all the dpoy awards in that era- but i think payton, pippen, rodman and jordan each deserved a couple.

@@onmywayto974 no what I'm saying is the game you were looking at is not in 1998 so Paul Pierce isn't a rookie. He's been in the league 3 years at this point. Old enough that any rookie talk doesn't apply. Especially, since he talked shit to Jordan before this.
