MJ really bulked up between after 1991. By 1993 he was noticeably slower due to the additional muscles he put on. But man, he was still more athletic, smarter, and far more fundamentally sound than just about any other player.
@johncambridge7181
@johncambridge7181 4 жыл бұрын
wwbdwwbd yes he was bulked and all but I think he was still faster and more athletic than anyone else. Maybe not as faster as he was in his 20s.. he was 32 in this season and that understandable why he getting slower(but still faster than anyone else). And another factor he didn’t do much of his flying dunk so that he could reserved a lot of his energy more and managed his playing time intelligently throughout the game.

Idk why people think that within 1-2 years a player suddenly becomes slower and less athletic simply by aging. This is not true. It has to do more with the style of play and the style of workouts in the gym(or lack of it), also with the load management and staying away from injuries. Athletes don't change so quickly, it takes several years to see some noticeable change in their speed, and there are even some sprinters for examples who beat their PR past thier 30's. Kim Collins did it at 40. Maybe there are some changes in his abilities, but only he knows it, because it's not really noticeable for the crowd. It's more choice then inability
@mrjooxmanallah
@mrjooxmanallah 2 жыл бұрын
He wasn’t more quick, athletic or agile. Tim Grover really did a number on us all by selling us on the belief that MJ’s bulk helped him win championships. No, MJ’s jumper and the triangle offense is the reason he won championships.
@mrjooxmanallah
@mrjooxmanallah 2 жыл бұрын
@@nikolayiliev4900 Yep, becoming bulkier either by muscle or by fat will lead to a much less athletic player within a year. But you can’t just isolate age. In 1-2 years, there’s 1-2 more years of wear and tear on a body that’s not recovering as much as it used to.

1989-90 is the last season when Clyde was real "The Glide" and could be realistically comparable with Jordan. Since then, he gradually became slow footed, lost lateral speed and was always hesitating when tried to slash to the basket. He started to shoot more 3 pointers, instead, but if it didn't work, he was perplexed against tight defence, like during 1992 Finals.
@youngblood4127
@youngblood4127 4 жыл бұрын
Do you think this have to do with his conditioning? Because judging by their Genetic makeup they seemed somewhat comparable with Jordan being a little more toned, stronger, quicker, nimble, etc. Jordan was Gym rat & it appears from this video & other videos pertaining to Clyde that he (Drexler) was not. Jordan truly aged like fine wine. Also, I think morally Drexler was defeated until he went to Houston.
@dzidekkrepak8289
@dzidekkrepak8289 4 жыл бұрын
@@youngblood4127 I agree with everything, except that Drexler was naturally stronger than Jordan (wider shoulders, thicker legs) and could back him down in the mid or low post. That's his only advantage over MJ. As for the rest of it... Drexler simply started to age much quicker (after 1990) and losing an agility was the most visible thing. Clyde had also some some level of arrogance in him. He wanted to play and win ONLY by his natural born talent without adding much of work to correct weaknesses. His first NBA coach Jack Ramsay said about him: "Clyde was the last to arrive and the first to leave if you didn't restrain him. It's just who he was: arrive, perform and leave. He didn't see the logic in other things." And, when he clashed with such a MANIAC of self-improvement like Jordan, he was blocked and stiffed, by the awareness of his ever-lower athleticism and a fear of being humiliated. In Houston, despite being older, he resurected for a short period of time because of, you know, an adrenaline rush (it's now or never), and a lack of mental blockade. He felt safer and more confident playing as a second option next to much, much better scorer, who at that time Olajuwon was.

@@dzidekkrepak8289 After reexamining their physiques you're totally right especially circa 92 or even 93 going backwards. Michael Jordan was definitely leaner & Clyde was more muscle bound & broader. I will say that Michael Jordan's strength was very underrated along with Scottie Pippen. Robert Horry & Ron Artest, along with other former NBA Players are on record saying that Jordan was very strong even rivaling LeBron James in strength. In all fairness, I believe they were talking about Jordan during the 2nd 3 peat & Wizard days because that's where you can distinctly see his Mass in correlation with his power. I liken Michael Jordan & Clyde Drexel to the Stephen Curry & Damian Lillard of this generation in terms of overall skill. Minus the work ethic part because Lillard works very hard.

6:02 how is this not a foul? It almost looks like Jordan was just trying to intentionally foul him to prevent the shot, and the refs still didn't bother to blow a whistle. Most players on both teams look surprised that play wasn't stopped. You know it's a bad call when players like "oh, foul" and stop hustling, but then no foul is called.

1:08 look at how FLAT Michael's shot was. I mean that's insane! You can notice throughout his career that most of his shots were so low, almost like a line drive towards the basket.. I think this may be the reason why he "struggled" shooting the 3 (he really didn't).

So tired of people in the comments of these (awesome) Jordan videos who can't keep LeBron's name out of their mouth. Listen: in terms of individual skill and performances, there'll never be anyone like MJ. BUT I defy anyone here to name a better team player than LBJ. Heres a player who had to accept a leadership role basically since day 1 in the league. A player who's never had a truly great coach or a killer offensive system (Ty Lue is basically a figurehead and Spoelstra isn't exactly Pat Riley. I really smart dog could've coached that Heat team to a chip). Everything he's accomplished has been the result of his basketball IQ alone. You can discredit him if you want to but you won't be able to convince me that he isn't a true great.

Lebron 6. Bill Russell 7. Wilt 8. Kobe 9. Hakeem 10. Barkley Keep in my mind, this is my personal list that is why Charles is in there, i love me some Barkley!

Man, what are you talking about? He is one of the worst team players in history. Not only he will not ever accept any other system than have everybody else spread the floor for him, but in the process he sucks the life out of his teamates, who are all forced to become onedimensional players. All of his teams amount to less than their individual parts would promise and in result he always seems to be needing more help. Do you think Phil Jackson would have ever had the chance to become a great coach, if MJ didnt put his heart and soul behind him? PJ was an assistant, turning first, a nobody, asking Jordan, the most illustrius sports figure in the world already, to participate in a different system. If Jordan didnt back him, Phil, his system, his zen BS and all the rest that came to be known as signs of great ability, would have gone by the back door, and would have been considered as a joke. Furthermore, and thats an even greater sign of team leadership, Jordan worked with his rookies and sophomores and role players to create a dynasty, all the way from the bottom up. There is no teamate thats not expendable for Lebrun, and he 'll proceed to trade half the team twice a year. In fact he quits his teams once they appear to be in a downward spiral. Dirk, now thats a modern leader.

Nah, he ain't even close. He was no where near Jordan unless you're comparing his best to Jordan when he was 35 years old and so on or 20 years old and younger. It's too much of a stretch to say that he almost had Jordan's skillset. There's only two things if not three things which Clyde Drexler was better at than Jordan, with regards to the sport. That's being taller, getting offensive rebounds and possibly having a longer wingspan. I'm not 100% certain about his wingspan so I can't confirm for sure if his wingspan was longer or not but if I were to guess, it is really similar to Jordan's if it's not half an inch longer. Other than that, there's only a handful of things in basketball that that no one can say either was better at only because it's impossible to validate, from the most basic close range shots that are done flat-footed, using either hand or both hands or using the back-board etc.
