Yep, Shaq was a rookie the magic got good. The East got competitive again. And MJ at 29 still at the top of his prime. That was definitely the best era of the NBA.

Yeah I've been studying him a lot recently and really he had actually a all around game. And had a better shot then most ppl give credit for. Especially around the 90s when his dunking ability started to slow down (same with Jordan). And really both players kinda had the same style of play if you look at this game. Jordan had a way purer mid range game and quicker shot then Wilkins. But Wilkins by this time really improved it so he won't have to rely on just athleticism like he kinda was in the 80s.

Yes. When Wilkins retired he was the 8th all time scorer in NBA history. How he didn’t make the list of 50 greatest players of all time is beyond me.

I remember in the 80's as teenagers we would go over the one friends house who had cable and watch the Bulls and Hawks play on TBS (Hawks) and WGN (Bulls), because these games weren't on prime time tv back in the 80's, so we had to catch them on cable!!! For those who had cable back then!! These games today would be on Christmas Day, ESPN, and TNT all of the time!!

@@chrissams6230 Eh not really still a very great scorer just not a high flyer which was never going to be forever. He turned his game because of that, by the 90s Wilkins had a good mid range to around the post jump shot. And could hit a three here and there. And still had that quickness to get in the post and hop step and lay it in. I feel if the Hawks FO and Coach Lenny wasn't so stupid. He could've won a championship in 94. Hawks were the best team in the East and we traded Wilkins by All Star break, one of the worst decisions I've ever learned about. I'm sure if he didn't become a journeyman after being traded and stayed with the Hawks he could've been avg over 22 ppg all the way to 2000.

Watching this it occurred to me, that if i set the playback to .5 speed it would approximate the lethargic pace of too much of the modern NBA. These guys were all over the court and involved in every play whether offense or defense. Thrilling!

This Hawks team became the best team in the East the following year, when Mookie Blaylock took over at PG and they brought Lenny Wilkens in to coach. Dominique became a better all-around team player after his injury, and they played strong team defense with Blaylock and Augmon leading the way. Kevin Willis was playing like a true Allstar, and they had a good bench with guys like Adam Keefe, Duane Ferrell, and Craig Ehlo. They had great chemistry that year, but management decided to trade Wilkins for Manning, and rip out the hearts of Hawks fans, and leaving us to only wonder what if.

And really it's Lenny's fault too because he thought Manning would help more in the playoffs. Which makes completely no sense then and even more now when you see Wilkins as one of the best scorers of all time and where the hell is this Manning dude. I swear only reason we don't win in ATL much is because our front offices in every team are just clueless. Thankfully now things have gotten better and Hawks probably have our best owners in our entire history. And Atlanta United are seen as power houses in soccer and media appeal. But we definitely should have won a chip with Wilkins in 86 and mainly 94. But hopefully Trae can do it!

No one realizes Dominique Wilkins never had a Hall of Fame coach. Phil Jackson, Chuck Daly or Pat Riley I believe those coaches would have won a championship with some of the teams that Dominique played on!

Dominique Wilkins didn't have any help he needed another scoring threat on his team. He just didn't have enough to get past the Celtics, Pistons or the Bulls in a playoff series. While Jordan had Pippen and Magic had Kareem and Worthy. Isiah had the Bad Boys the unstoppable trio of himself Joe Dumars and Vinnie Johnson. The Hawks seemed like they tried to build around him but they never did get a player to help Wilkins get past the Celtics, Pistons and Bulls.

I'm still waiting for a highlight reel where I don't see Pip getting torched by someone on the perimeter. He was a great off-ball defender, and a good post-up defender, but over and over he'd be torched by guys who had any amount of perimeter game. I'm pretty sure his defensive player awards were mostly a result of his steals and rebounds stats, and not due to any intangible on-ball defense. (he avg'd nearly 3 steals a game, which _is_ really good, but not sure that makes up for being a liability on the perimeter the rest of the time)

Doc Rivers was an All Star in 1988, and Moses Malone was an All Star in 1989. Kevin Willis was a borderline All Star in 1987, and finally made an All Star team in 1992. When Willis couldn't play the 1989 season, they replaced him with two-time former All Star Reggie Theus. I don't know that we can fairly say it was Dominique Wilkins and a pack of nobodies. Obviously, teams have to share the ball, and not everyone can put up All Star numbers, so it can sometimes be helpful to think in terms of All Star talent. As in, how many people on the team ever proved themselves to be productive enough to make an All Star team at some point in their careers. For example, the 1989-90 Pistons had Isiah, Dumars, Rodman, Aguirre and Laimbeer - five players who made multiple All Star teams in their careers. In other words, they could have put out a legit starting lineup of All-Star-caliber players. That's both rare and impressive. The 1986 Celtics were even more preposterously loaded with Bird, McHale, Ainge, Walton, Johnson and Parish all being All-Star-caliber players on the same roster at the same time; five of them in your starting lineup, with an All-Star-level guy to bring off the bench. If we look at the Hawks of that era, the 1989 team had Wilkins, Rivers, Theus and Malone - two active NBA All Stars, and four All-Star-caliber players in the starting lineup. That is NOT a set of scrubs.

I agree with you completely with regard to Dominique's talent and the lack of prime HOF talent around him. But the original statement was that Dominique never played with another All Star in his career, when the fact is he played with three different players who had All Star seasons while he was active on the Hawks (Malone, Rivers and Willis). Also, unless we factor in what players either were in the past or became in the future, we'd have to explain how Isiah was the only All Star on the 1989 Pistons (Laimbeer, Dumars, Aguirre and Rodman didn't make it that year), or how Jordan was the only All Star on the 1991 Bulls (Pippen didn't make it that year).

This was the season Jordan lost some of his jumping ability and became the jumpshooting Jordan. He got pawned by Dominique at the end; he got outjumped by Dominique twice at the end. That didn't happen to Jordan until this season. Less of the high-flying, gravity defying plays and settling for more jumpshots. You could see it in this game. Looks like Michael no longer had the left he used to have.

By time the ref blows the whistle, Jordan is up shooting the ball. No player contact after he jumps, which is why people watching slow mo go "hey where's the foul, I don't see any contact on the shot"
